How To Spot Fake Luxury Jewelry

- An authenticity expert from designer consignment shop The RealReal in New York City taught Insider producer Kyle Kerchaert how to spot replicas of popular designer jewelry. We took a look at some of the most iconic jewelry pieces around: the Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra necklace with 20 motifs, the Hermès Clic Clac H bracelet, Elsa Peretti's bib necklace for Tiffany & Co., the Cartier Love bracelet, and the David Yurman Cable Classic bracelet. Jewelry-authenticity expert Katherine Ward put us to the test to see if we could determine the real designer jewelry pieces from their knockoffs. We also learned some tips along the way for how shoppers can spot the difference themselves.

How To Spot Fake Luxury Jewelry
*Very Informative*
_but how to Spot Fake Friends_
^^this
Don't get any
M O O D
Duchi it's not very difficult
*no,we need a video called:*
_how to get friends_
I see, thanks for clarifying which jewelry we should steal and which ones we shouldn't
Just kidding.
unless..?
He isn't
Hehe
Why you here?
Where’s the one with a mustache?!
When you are too broke to even buy replica
Ouch
Get some fuckin cash together
Good one!!!!
Is the photography/editing driving anyone else nuts? Why am I looking at a video of a woman looking at a bracelet instead of getting a closeup look at the bracelet?
Because they don't want you to really see the bracelet
same, I thought I was seeing the intro and not the actual tutorial on how to recognize them, then the video ended xd
agreeeeeeeeed
True it doesn't explain how to see the differences at all
Lesson learned: Don't spend too much on designer stuff. Everybody is wearing the knockoff to the point that the original one on you would look cheap too.
you're basically paying for the brand name and status symbol. especially that sterling silver piece. for God's sake it's silver. it should only be $200 max. I wouldn't even pay for that.
@gina907 I like to think I'm paying for quality too. I don't mind paying more for clothes that will last for a decade. That being said, I get them all from 2nd hand shops or are hand me downs from relatives. I do notice the difference in quality between luxury brands and affordable ones.
ToudaHell exactly! I wouldn’t pay for that either!
Its the same with cars
True! Indians will cringe if you paid that much for silver 😂
Material costs come second to the cost of craftsmanship in finely crafted products. Being silver is irrelevant.
I think the biggest problem with knockoffs is nobody talks about how dangerous they can be, or that they’re usually used to fund criminal organizations. But because of how high and mighty legit luxury brands set themself up, and that many of them are basically “legal criminals,” (underpay workers, nightmare management, etc.) people still prefer to buy knockoffs because they want to screw over big corporate.
It is to save money and knock-offs can be more massively produced and you know, look the same at times
Nice, buy the replica and save some money.
Yeap, that Cartier replica.
The problem is the good replicas are (attempting) to be sold as the real deal, so if you're intentionally buying a replica, it isn't a good one.
@@noricoco4695 nah you’ve just got to know where to look, there are some very good quality Cartier replicas out there (I have one that’s indistinguishable from the real until you look at the serial number inside, and like when you’re wearing no-one would know), especially the ones with Chinese lab grown diamonds. Still expensive, for the gold and diamonds, but also still less than half the price of the genuine Cartier.
Nah, you should care about quality over the name. If you can't afford the level of quality of a genuine piece from Hermes, Cartier, etc., find a well made piece from a small/local maker etc. instead of buying a fake (which has appeal in only fake name plastered on it and nothing more).
@@trilobiteterror8015 It is very funny that one of my friends who own both genuine Prada and fake ones, she said the fake ones definitely had better quality than her real ones... guess does not happened in all the brands but definitely was a shock to hear that.
So.....if you need a video and experts to tell the difference, then it's obviously not worth buying anything other than the knockoffs!
Great, thanks!
You went to the real real?... haven’t they been getting bad press for not actually authenticating luxury goods?
they had... i feel that this is advertising for them
Agreed!
Yeah, ALL of these "Insiders" are paid adverts.
Next time: *How to Spot Whether Gold Jewellery Comes From an Illegal Child-Labour Mine in South Africa.* Answer: it all does!
there is a certificate on most diamonds from Sierra Leone that weren't from child labour, look it up if you're intetniding on buying jewels
You’re wrong.
Dats crazy but I don’t remember asking 😳
There are no child mines in SA, but the entire mining industry is exploitative.
@@sageivu It's easy to pay to get your gems authenticated.
Today's fact: A group of owls is called a Parliament.🦉🦉🦉
that's a lot more useful then this entire channel
And a man be as wise as an owl.
That's not a sci fact
SciFactsYT why do i now see the parliament as owls instead of people 😂
That's has nothing to do with science
A lot people saying they'd get the fake in a heart beat, it's worrying. Bruh designers should just hide their designs if people are just gonna rip them off.
I don't really care for these brands but I do like jewelry. As long as the the materials are real, the price is sort of irrelevant. And I love to buy used pieces too ! The jeweler can authenticate them and clean them to new condition for the low 😊
For the first necklese I liked the fake one better
Would be great if they also did one where there was no comparison... cause often you can’t put them side by side
What if Authentic shops sell Knockoffs ?🤭
I know when you pay for jewelry you pay for the expensive jewels but I think if jewelry that isn’t made with expensive jewels looks good and isn’t extremely over priced it’s still good and totally worth it’s cost
fakes ones are just as good. one one is going to take a deep look in any of your stuff. its about the design, not the price.
True, but the issue is that some people will try to sell you a bracelet or something claiming it's a real and they try to charge you like 4000 dollars instead of the 5 dollars it's worth
Ooo I love knockoffs, stuff that’s cheap and looks pricy, hell yes.
I don't see a problem with knowingly buyoff a knockoff if you're not trying to pass it off as the real thing. Sometimes you just like a design but you have no interest in buying the authentic version. That goes double when a design is trendy or kitschy.
Oscar Wilde said: "Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten".
I think I have a fake cartier, but it has passed all the tests of being gold. It was a gift.
If anything, this exercise serves as a reason not to waste your money on expensive jewelry.
Why couldn’t you zoom in more for the camera, i can barely make out the details
Yesterday, my grandma found this very pretty bracelet on the floor, and thought that it would suit me so she gave it to me. It has the Luis Vuitton symbols, although we can't figure out whether it's real or fake.
Me an intellectual: A bracelet is a bracelet, a necklace is a necklace.
Why should I care what someone else is wearing?
Rezalion their intention was that you could see which one was a replica and which one was the real one so you don’t buy the fake
@@quequieresgueyy9140 buy retail or from an authentic site or jeweler not ebay.
@@Lifeissorich. some of these things are works of art and I think you're missing the point. This is to make the consumer a more informed buyer. This is so that if you ho to a consignment shop, whether they have a good reputation or not us the consumer don't have to completely depend on that you can make your own judgment. Especially useful if you're traveling and you see something in an antique shop or other shop where you don't know their reputation. Most of the items they saw were vintage, not sold at retail shops like some mass produced product. And it a jeweler has it, it may not even be on the floor. Vintage Tiffany in particular would be a special item. If you're at a market or antique shop, and see something it would be wise to have your own foundation of information as to whether what you're buying has any actual value. For example if something looks or is being sold as authentic. Sure you can buy it just for the look, but the information would tell you if it is a GOOD counterfeit, and keep you from paying for it as much as the real. Take the vintage tiffany, maybe for me I'd pay $200 for a good vintage tiffany, but if I could authenticate it myself then my price limit is going to go up. If I'm in France and I see a vintage brooch, and place a designer and a collection to it, and maybe that brooch is a family heirloom, then the backstory and my knowledge can influence how much and if I want to pay for it. There are good people who scout pages like ebay, looking for things that are worth more money than is being asked for. There are people who collect things and in order to not get swindled they have become experts at distinguishing fakes. You may not care, but there is a reason for one to know these things, and valuable stuff has been found in unexpected places. This video is to provide a glimpse of what to look out for so you too can be an informed buyer.
Oh cool I’m gonna use this :D **continues to put on bracelet from bracelet kit**
The "fakes" aren't even fakes. They are fakes if they are made of plates copper with plastic and glass stones. Even the "real" jewelry imitates the fakes: plastic and base metals (Hermès, Chanel).
It doesn't matter if they're made out of gold or diamonds. These materials aren't even rare anymore, most aren't sourced ethically and due to monopolistic practices, their price remains speculative even though it shouldn't. And the "real" objects (attached to a brand) add a markup that can reach 800% or even more, to the actual value of the item. People that buy these things are beyond stupid and in desperate need of attention.
Real Christophe Poly jewelry is made of glass stones.
But how can you tell it when you dont have the real one beside?
as an average shopper, i DEFINITELY can't afford luxury, so this video is useless to me
They’re all still pretty.
They are all pieces of art.
You deserve the authenticity and genuinity prices💋
I got all but the last bonus round 1 right. I’m an LV Authenticator but can spot a replica 9:10
Ah yes the average shopper can really afford the real thing
"HeRmÈs HaS gReAt QuALiTy CoNtRoL"
Jewelry from Hermès is literally the cheapest and suckiest shit ever but go off I guess
Wow useful thanks
Just goes to show you really need an expert when it comes to this stuff. 3/5 is pretty good for a lay person but I wouldn't risk dropping hundreds/thousands of dollars if there was any possibility of it being a dupe.
Unless you're making an investment that can be converted to cash later, why bother with the "real" thing? You can't take it with you.
Erik Ruiz tea sis
I think people don't need luxury products like a Cartier bracelet. But wearing really cheap jewelry can be dangerous because it can have cadmium, led, and other heavy metals. That in the future may cause health problems.
Thank you.
Question: Is Business Insider just a playlist of paid advertising?
Yes
Yes
For the final customer, whether if the product he buys the feel is enough i think, of I get same feel in a cheaper things, I'm good with it until I but jewellery as a asset
But if you’re paying retail for the real thing and getting a much cheaper knockoff, it’s important. If you’re buying it heavily discounted and with the knowledge that its likely fake I don’t see the harm, but a lot of times these are thousands of dollars.
In the thumbnail the fake one is prettier
I love Pandora fakes 😂
Buy from legit store so you don’t have to worry about fake.
Why did they have mics if the audio was so bad anyways
When they put the ring emojis to the side I thought it was real at firat
Good looking
Comment section: No problem buying fake.
Yes. But this video is so that you don't pay real price for a fake.
🤷🏻♀️
Don't pay 1million for something worth 3bucks.
Even if it's fake or not, it still looks good.
And when you really think about it they are all pointless, useless, "shiny", crap.
I mean, if that's how you think of it, that accounts for all jewelry. If you have no interest in jewelry, why are you watching the video? (Genuine question, no criticism intended).
@@lilacpen8678 blame youtube, it put it in my suggestions..🤷♂️
And yes, same goes for all jewelry.
@@gamerofthesith5275 I mean, just because something is objectively useless, doesn't mean it can't bring others joy. I do art commissions on the side and at the end of the day, my art is nothing more than a few bytes of data or a few graphite squiggles on scrap paper, and yet, people are willing to buy these useless things from me because it brings them joy.
Thanks a lot for the authentication of information 👍😘👄
Shift jewelry shopping is like going treasure hunting
I’m too broke to afford any of these ;-;
The lady from realreal should have a RUclips channel
What’s so bad about buying knockoffs.
if it’s SoOo hard to spot a knockoff just buy knockoffs, your saving money and no one will notice
So now I've to search for another video that shows me the closer view of the necklace because this video just showed me the closer view of the woman
Don’t stop when you’re tired. Stop when you’re done.
Agree friends?❤️
No💕
I hate it when I find the knock off of something I like, and the knock off is cuter than the original! Like wtf I want it cuz it’s cuter, but w the original ppl won’t bully me uuggh
Qurat ul Ain damn u be right..tysm I love ur confidence ♡
As an Indian watching this video I would the only thing that matters is are the metals gold and are the gems real. If in replica the metals are gold or silver and the gems real it doesn't matter much. I would be willing to pay the cost to metal and gems plus a 6 percent making charge on the replica and would consider it a great deal.
where came from those fake or copy products ?
God I hate the vocal fry and over enunciated vowels
Same, it's so obnoxious
The Real Real is known for having a sketchy past with selling fakes. Fashionphile would've been the much better option for your interview.
The up speak and vocal fry are strong with this one
Doesn't matter to me which one is real and which one is fake, because I don't like any of them. I will say that laboratory grown gemstones are becoming increasingly difficult to spot without a loupe. CZ "diamonds" are remarkably brilliant. I found one on the road and I know it's fake because it's so perfect, but it's still absolutely beautiful.
It’s all fake
as someone who uses fake jewellery, im kinda mad lmao
Just imagine...If she gonna says
"this is fake ones (basically original)"
"But miss I need money, are you gonna take it? Please help me"
"Well sorry we can't"
"I'm begging you, help me out. I'm drowning 😭"
"Alright, we short it out. Im gonna buy it, and accept it as a help for you. Here $250"
"Thank you very much. May god bless you as always"
"Catching in silence, this shit worth $4500... Ouuuu lord what a gift"
Lmao 😂😂
Ugh, I'd rather just get a cool ring for a dollar at the thrift store than a n y of these.
Right? All these are so unbelievably ugly and trashy looking. 3k+ for that bracelet? That's insane
InteRresting.
Nice paid advertisement. Money can’t buy good taste. It’s about proportions, not the price tag.
Why do lots of Americans still think French has a rolled „R“? It was hundreds of years ago!
Now hear me out, Quebec (Canada) still uses the rolled R, sure but I am 100% Americans encounter French from France/Beglium/Switzerland etc. more often, all of them use the throat-sounding R.
Soooo nobody gonna mention that the thumbnail just lies to us???
What's the need???
The 👏Real👏Real👏has👏tried👏selling👏inauthentic 👏items👏
I got them all-
I have a real heavy vintage bracket like this original.
Should we really care? It's just jewelry
Ok now i know how to steal the real one
Anyone who is stupid enough to pay for a markup of 400 to 800% or even more, just for a logo, deserves to be ripped off. If you are buying luxury brands, you are buying the idea that you are desperate for external validation and that you suck at math and truly valuable investments.
How is this a how to?
I’m only watching this so I can call out a popular kid at school if they make fun of me
What if the fake looks better than the real one!
Change the title to "Basics for First Time Snatcher"
did she do the sound recording on her nokia 3310?
$775 for some sterling silver?
This was about spoting fake brands? Well, they had quality replicas for comparison. But, without thorough comparison it is far different to make the righ guess. Besides, if the replicas are of the quality materials, such as gold, silver and precious stone WHO CARES, especially when you get tem for afordable price. The real problem is with fake fine jewelry. Nowdays you have perfectly made copies, just silver or gold plated, with fake clasp stamps. Only after professional chemical analysis the materials can be confermed or you wear them for some time first, before discovering that these are fake as they wear and tear easily🥴
when you dont even have money to buy the fake one😢
But, I actually think the fake ones don’t look haft bad and if I save money oh heck yeah imma get it!
I thought that maybe I am not as good at spotting fake stuff and I didn’t learn from my parents but I was pleasantly surprised when I almost right away spot the fake
And it’s a video
sO I’m jUst bEIng hAppY hErE okAy
Fire the sound guy. Two lapel mics and neither are connected. Shame!
Good work!! I would have never noticed 😂🤣
Who cares
All that fine jewelry and they couldn’t afford good audio.
How do you spot a fake when you don't have a real one to compare it to?
You are screwed
She's lowkey critiquing the designs of these haha
I feel like expert be coming expert when they have the REAL one to compare...so we wouldn't know if we've bought the FAKE ones.
If you can’t afford it. Don’t buy a fake
