Make sure to eat a lot of Japanese food even if you can't come to Japan just yet. My personal favourite is spicy miso ramen, you should try it. And be sure to use the Japanese phrases I teach in this video they're seriously useful!

I think it just sounds respectful. If someone makes a meal for me I would definitely say thank you before and after. But I also pray before my meals. So maybe it’s more normal for me.
Criminally underrated channel

He's interesting, slow-talking, funny and cute. The perfect teacher !
Exactly my thoughts! He has such a sweet and cute demeanor and it really shines in these videos. I think that makes it easier to focus on him and more engaging. He makes it quite fun to learn and listen. I still find his speech a tad fast, but he’s so fun and includes both English and Japanese captions so when I need to rewind it’s like enjoying something a second time, rather than a distraction like most others :)
As someone who's learning Japanese but really doesn't like anime that channel is honestly super helpful ! I really enjoy hearing people speaking in japanese and it's kinda weird that every Japanese teaching channel is in English like what's the point 😂 anyway that was an amazing video ! Thank you 💮♥️
I learned Chinese in Chinese (even from zero level. At first I was using only body languages like a baby haha)
So I’m really happy that some people like you realized that it’s actually the best way to learn languages
One of the best channels out there for listening comprehension in my opinion. I believe the most affective method for learning a language is immersion (I pretty much learned my English entirely from RUclips 😅) but sometimes it's hard to find the right material for your level (most of the time it either too easy or too hard, or when you are watching a Japanese lesson it's mostly focused on grammar and you are not actually getting enough effective listening practice) you're videos are amazing! They are very natural, not too hard nor too easy and I think anyone can benefit from them plus I find them very entertaining. Thank you so much for sharing with us 😊
I totally agree, Maya! He is great and his channel has the best to offer in yt community.
Actually when I’m making videos, I use lots of common words we actually use in sentences but also in every video I put new words as well not to be too easy so I’m happy that you’re saying like this!
Yeah, I agree, it's very good for listening practice
Agreed! Thats been my issue with being stuck in n5 level. It can be hard to remember words you never hear or read in real context.
I’m a high school teacher teaching Japanese in Australia and I just finished teaching my students how to order in a Japanese restaurant and this is just perfect as a supplement to my resources!
another one to mention would be if you order a coffee or dessert they ask you if you want it before or after the meal! this one tripped me up for a while 😂
I'm so impressed how cool this channel is. Thank you for recording these clips! It's so interesting to watch and easy to understand. You make people really happy.
It is so nice that you do not have the english subtitles in your video,so i can use it to as japanese listening practice without getting distracted by english subtitles
Some people advices me that since people are lazy to switch on subs, I should put Eng subs in videos but I’m happy that I didn’t
I suggest you create a podcast because your speed is just right for listening comprehension practice.
This is the type of content that would have been REALLY useful for me when I first came to Japan a few years ago. I studied Japanese in high school and university, but I never had a class about how to order food at a restaurant! On the other hand, when I studied French and Thai, we learned that in the beginner level class.
I am studying japanese for the N4 level and your videos with subtitles both in English and Japanese helps me a lot! thanks a lot man and keep it up!! :D
I didn't realise いただきます and ごちそうさまでした was related to religion :O I always thought it was the Japanese culture in general. I have a japanese friend in her early 20s and she says that everytime before and after we eat and I thought that was really nice. I haven't noticed it from other Japanese people in the restaurant when I eat alone so I thought people don't really do it anymore. But after seeing her do it, I started doing it too, and I think it's a really nice gesture :D
Just discovered your channel and i have to say i'm really impressed. You explain everyday japanese in such a clear, concise, and practical way. i'm not trying to learn japanese formally; i'm just really interested in it but your videos are motivating me to try it out!
Yes, in some countries abroad, especially in places like america or the UK, slurping your food noisily is considered a bad thing. I guess it came from the idea of high class restaurants being a "quiet" place for eating, so eventually it just became a cultural thing where people judge noisy slurpers/eaters.
Would really appreciate the video about japanese "no"! it's boggled my mind for so long as to why japanese don't just say no straightforwardly.
Thank you for your videos! They really help. I have just moved here and found it super confusing to go to a ramen shop and a 7-11! Luckily the menus had pictures.. can you say please slow down? Thank you again!!!
7:13 my eardrums just went
I still remember a very embarrassing moment from my last visit to japan when I was asked: 「二名様ですか?」and I replied with so much confidence:「いいえ、一名様です」before I realized my mistake and apologized and corrected myself to 「一人です」. That worker kept laughing for a while. That was so embarrassing 😳
Had a similar experience when I went to an underground izakaya to buy some sake by myself. The lady asked "何人" but I heard "何年" and thought she was asking about my age so I started to panic a bit as I was 18 at the time and the legal limit to buy alcohol was 20 haha
In Germany, making lots of noise when eating or drinking is definitely considered bad manners and very rude/disrespectful! On the other hand, the custom of giving thanks for the meal before and after, imho is really nice and promotes awarenessand gratefulness :)

Oxeriia
My Japanese dad also makes that sound when he is eating ramen. I am half Japanese and because I live in the Philippines throughout my whole life, I don't make that sound. I think we are the same as how Western countries eat. Culturally speaking, in my country, if someone would be eating with that sound could be tagged by others as quite rude or doesn't have any manners. I've been in that situation many times already when I was still very young, my mother would always disciplined me to close my mouth while eating haha. There was a time before when my dad went home here, and prepared us some ramen dishes, I tried asking him, 「お父さん、なんで食べ物を食べている時に、ちょっとうるさい声で出しているの?」He just said to me, 「そういう声で食べながら、もっと美味しくなりますよ。」Since that day, I totally understood about this important Japanese culture, and I hugely respect that in my country.
This is the video I needed when I traveled to Japan two years ago! Thanks so much for making this 🙏🏼
I’m so glad I found your channel! 😭💕 I’m currently studying Japanese (N5) and the phrases I know are textbook-based. On the side, I’m testing myself if I can read a Japanese manga (raw) already (or at least, how much I can read already). I still have to check some of the kanji on a dictionary but it helps me associate kanji characters to Japanese words. Although, I think in Japanese mangas, their conversation sounds way too casual (I’m not sure if Japanese people really converse like that in person?). As such, I’m really glad to have found this channel that’s aimed at conversational Japanese (at least, how they usually speak without sounding too polite or too casual).
Thank you so much for making this video!! I'm currently studying abroad in Japan, and eating at the restaurant here is exactly my biggest fear since I have no idea what I gotta say, so I'm really glad I found this video in my recommendation!
I think I'm less scared to eat outside now so I'll definitely try out the phrases here when I go out to eat next time. Thank you!
I've also subscribed to this channel! your explanation was easy to understand and fun to watch. I'll definitely check out your other vids later ^^
Wakariyasuuuiiiiii 👏👌Hontouni arigato🙇♂️ I’m trying to perfect my Japanese and maybe it’s because you speak carefully and slowly that it’s possible to understand everything you say without looking at the subtitles. I just discovered your channel and I already love it, I’ll use it to practice my Japanese, hontouni arigato.
Also about “itadakimasu” and “gochisousama”, as a foreigner we think it shows that the japanese society is very polite and has manners, so even if they are alone they still keep those manners, whereas abroad we only use them when we are with other people, it’s a very positive thing about Japanese people.
Also about making a sound when slurping ramen noodles, I think the sound makes people think of someone eating and chewing with their mouths open and making noise, that’s bad manners in many western countries, so maybe that’s why some people don’t like the sound of slurping noodles.
Thank you for answering so sincerely!😊
Just discovered this channel after watching 4 other channels for 2 years. All are good, but maybe it is the novelty, this one is SUPER
thanks for this one Onomappu!! looking forward for your next nice content! yatta!
The videos are really interesting and helpful. I enjoyed so much, then I can stop watching. Congratulations and thank you for sharing them
Great video! Very clear and sounds really natural, but I could understand everything so the level is perfect. 🙏🏻
The 神様 bit had me rolling! 😂 Humour is on point 👌.
I made exactly that mistake ⇒
The moment the words left my mouth, I realised my mistake and died inside.
Edit: I'm Chinese-American, and in both cultures, it's considered rude to make sounds while you're eating. I moved out when I was 18, and I started throwing table manners out of the window (just because I could). Unfortunately, all these bad habits showed up when I was having dinner with my dad, which led to a good lecturing about "the rudeness of slurping soup".
My partner and I visited a ramen shop in rural Furano, Hokkaido in February this year. I dunno why but somehow I learned about the virtue of slurping while eating ramen to indicate your appreciation. My partner missed out on this important cultural lesson, but I had no idea. It was just the two of us in the small shop. And he was just sitting there, quietly eating his ramen, I asked him, "Is it really that bad?". He was like, "Huh, no, it's surprisingly good." I said, "Uh, you better eat louder or else the shop owner's gonna believe you think it sucks."
Lots of cultural difference. We learn some of it in Japanese class, but these videos are truly a world of help.
Yay a new vid! I love having your videos on as passive or active listening practice :)
Thanks for commenting as always😁
@Onomappu

Hello Hitoki, your channel is super helpful. Glad I found it.
Thanks for going over this!! It's really helpful. My parents are from HK so I grew up going to asian (mostly chinese) restaurants ALL the time and they are kind of similar in terms of the menus and greetings. I also watched a lot of jdramas and (too much) anime growing up so I had an idea of what it's like, but it's still intimidating when you're not fluent in Japanese, especially when they speak so fast!!
丁寧でわかりやすい説明ありがとうございました!I'm binging all of your videos this is sooo helpful. I've learned Japanese entirely on my own and can read novels and papers without any problem but the few times I actually went to Japan I was so nervous in restaurants lol in Europe rn so can't really go to Japan but I hope when the time comes I can use your advices :)

It has been several years since I last went to Japan. I spent a long time there in 2011 and was there long enough to need to buy some new clothes. I was surprised to discover that when paying with a credit card at a department store, you could elect to pay in multiple installments. When the cashier asked how many times I wanted to be charged, I was confused! 「1回おねがいします」.....?! my Japanese wasn't very good. I am not sure how I managed to catch on. Or maybe I was ok with being charged several times the price if it got me out of there without making a fool of myself, haha.
I don't know if this is still common but after that, I just started paying in cash everywhere. Lol.
Can someone explain why I have understood and pronounced so much of the Japanese language after viewing videos? I think this guy is extraordinary.

What a great video! Thank you for the content :) I was living in Kyoto for 1 & half year and learned some Japanese, but there are (of course) many specific terms, that I never picked up. It's really interesting to watch, also your pronunciation is very nice, I can follow you well. I did have a problem in Japan with the "no" thing. For example, when I asked in the university, if I could take a class or do something a certain way, I never knew if 大丈夫 was an "okay" or a "no". That really confused me, because both things did happen. Have a good day :)
Thank you very much for this.
I hope to be able to go to Japanese restaurants when I get a chance to visit Japan again

If you slurp while eating ramen even outside Japan, I think most people will be fine with it. There is this idea going around that slurping is a compliment to the chef. (I believed it at one point so I slurped really loud to “make sure the chef knows that it’s good)
Also I’ve went to some ramen-ya and they tell you that slurping makes it yummier
Very helpful video, thank you!
I actually never knew itadakimasu and ochisousama originated as religious phrases?? I always thought it was just something polite to say, a little like how in english we'll wish someone "bon appetit" before eating (despite that being a french phrase). just kind of "enjoy your meal" but like, more outwards focused, like if you went "I'll enjoy my meal" as a way of showing gratitude for the food and the work it took to prepare it. (I guess a similar sentiment in English might be "bless the hands that made this meal", but that's a really long sentence isn't it...) to my knowledge, bon appetit was never religious, so I guess I just never really made the connection on my own.
it's really interesting! thank you for the video :D I'll have to do my best to actually learn japanese enough to speak it, but videos like this really help ^^
I thought shrines is Japanese style of temple because they also have someone like monk there too. This new info really interesting 👍
I'm just starting to learn Japanese, and just discovered your channel, its brilliant for listening practise, thank you! I'm curious though, what kind of things do you find on the woman only menu?
I watched an interview before (I think it was by Yuuta) where he asked Japanese people if they were religious. Many of them said yes, they were buddhist.
But while they said that, they also didn't know anything about Buddhism, so it seemed like that was just the easy answer, but not actually true.
I find religion in Japan very interesting. It's like everyone follows some select Shinto and Buddhism traditions, but barely anyone actually believes it. I think it's great.
Btw, aren't 神社 for Shinto Shrines and not Buddhist temples?
Don't know what the word for the temples is, but Google Translate says 寺院. I might have heard just 寺 before, but not sure...
We use 寺 more as you said!
Listening to this made me remember that one video on fb where a guy was alone in Japan and didn't know how to speak nor read Japanese so he instead went to convenience store for dinner and bought a canned food. He had to taste it before realizing it is cat food

This is so helpful! Also, in the U.S., it is indeed considered bad manners to slurp soups and noodles. Now that I live in Tokyo, I have to actively think about slurping my ramen. Otherwise, I'm really quiet. 😂

Different countries or regions have their own cultures and what is viewed as good or bad manners so don’t stress about it! But it is true in western culture if you make loud sounds while eating, it isn’t good etiquette. Don’t think about it at all 😹 Unless you visit a country then it’s good to research about the country’s views on what is good or bad manners, so you can be respectful as a tourist 🙏🏻
I remember ordering tonkatsu with my friend who was visiting me in Japan once, and there was a misunderstanding when I placed the order… my friend wanted the #1 on the menu, and after looking a moment I decided I wanted it too. I tried to tell the waitress something like “1番を二つください”… but I think I had already told her my friend’s order, and maybe had paused in my follow-up sentence or something, because instead she thought I was trying to order the #2 instead of a second #1. I wondered if I had communicated it clearly enough but the misunderstanding came about because she thought I was a foreigner stumbling through the order and mixing up counting words, or if there was a better counting word for two orders of a dish that would have made it perfectly clear and the way I tried to say it was too ambiguous. the #2 was the bigger serving of the #1 so I ended up receiving way more food than I could eat haha
Thanks for the video :) it was really helpful! I have one question left: how do I greet the stuff (people working at the restaurant)? Can I say
New subscriber here 🥰 your channel is amazing! I started learning Japanese some time ago, but it really doesn’t stick 😢 I keep forgetting it. What would be a better way to help me not forget it? Also, me and my boyfriend are planning to visit japan as soon as this corona is over. The problem is that he is muslim and he doesn’t eat pork or drink alcohol. How can I ask at a restaurant if the food is halal if they don’t understand what halal is? 😄 thank you so much for all your videos!!! Great job!
Unfortunately most of us are not sure about what you can eat. But if you tell them that アルコールと豚肉(ぶたにく)食べられません, they would understand.
I hope you'll enjoy traveling Japan😊
