Nice one bending off the end of the strings, Scott. I use mainly the same method of getting my strings in tune with two slight differences. I pull the string I want do tune at the 12th fret so the power is distributed symmetrically and also I can pull it further. Nothing dramatic. I also start with the thinnest string but I don't tune it up to full pitch at first. I tune it to the same pitch of the next string (that's D for the G string). Then I push the string down like you did at the bridge and nut. I pull the string and correct the pitch until pulling doesn't change the pitch anymore. Then I tune it up to the correct pitch and repeat pulling and tuning until the pitch is kept. That way my bass usually stays pretty much in tune from then on.
Breaking the wire without pkiers is a great tip!! Wish i new that yesterday. Broke A string 5 min before start of gig. Replaced without cutting by holding it over the slot and winding a few wraps round the peg. Messy, and unreliable but worked for a temp fix. But now the string is junk and buying new set to install p roperly.
Thanks! The bass is my own signature SWB-1 bass. It's manufactured by Chowny. If you're interested, you can check 'em out here - chownybass.com/product/swb-1-scott-whitley-signature/?ref=shortscalebass
I do this a lot. Just be careful with the E string and wind slowly/carefully as some of the thick part of the string will wind round the post. This isn't possible on some Danelectro basses as the posts are more like guitar ones. :)
omg, I can't believe it took me this long to realise you responded lol. I appreciate your response and your video as it has been very useful to get a better tone free of charge. Hope you keep up the good work and keep it nifty. @@ScottWhitley
Haha - this is why I stopped using that camera lol! The video was filmed on the Zoom Q8 HD. Whilst it's a great piece of kit with amazing audio quality and features, the wide angle lens introduces a ton of barrel distortion (like a fisheye) which (like you noticed) makes the neck look like a banana! 😂

Thank you so much for the easy-to-follow instructions (and close-ups)!
My pleasure....glad you found it helpful. Cheers, Scott.
Awesome practical video. Cheers Scott

Haha - didn't spot your reply Chowny! :-)
:-D
Awesome
Thanks!! :)
Will the snapping off still work with cobalts
What about fitting long scale strings on a short scale?

What kind of bass is that? It has a beautiful finish.
It's a Chowny SWB-1. :)
Can you actually snap the other thicker strings such as E or A? cus they seem quite hefty.
You can, yes! The core is usually still only thin, the rest is all windings.

Wow why is the neck on that bass so curved and it plays okay like that

It doesn't work with nickel plated
It does in my experience.
