    I understand its impressive that the kid is learning to work on his car. Trust me thats so impressive that someone wants to learn this stuff. But being a diagnostic tech. I would have went straight for the junk aftermarket cam sensor that wasnt counting up on the scanner. Im pretty sure you can swap it with bank 2 cam sensor and retest. Chrysler is notorious for no starts when they loose a cam sensor. But hey, i understand he only payed for a certain charge. But if that same car was in my shop we charge hr diag. Im checking power and ground and signal with the scope at the sensor or ecm..especially when the scanner shows no cam counts. Thats too easy to do before recommending a customer to remove the timing cover to check the timing. Thats just me tho.

    That's Awesome man you offered your help, and gave the guy your advice from your wisdom & experience, and gave him some encouragement and confidence to do the job himself........maybe that will inspire him to become a tech/mechanic one day......or at least have confidence in working on his own stuff and maybe be able to help out other people.......
    That's how I started out......and how alot do.....working on my own stuff.....then family & friends & neighbors & coworkers vehicles & such........
    Alot of 'bad apples' out there would've taken advantage of that situation, and maybe still never got the guy's vehicle fixed right, or even made it worse.
    I've only done one timing chain job a long time ago, on an older Dodge van, but have done quite a few timing belts......and is definitely a little 'uneasy' feeling and lack of confidence doing your first ones.....when it's not something you're experienced at......but is kind of like that with most automotive repair work.....when it's your first time doing a certain job, or working on a vehicle, or engine, or system, or diagnosing a problem you've never had to diagnose before.......
    I don't remember where I heard about you......but it was with Enright Auto.....I think on The Jaded Mechanic or Changing The Industry podcast......maybe both.....but have been following and supporting your channel ever since. Definitely nice to see you out there doing things right, and helping people for the right reasons, and not just for the love of the Almighty Dollar.

There are a ton of decent running vehicles out there for sale in the 1,000 to $3,000 range. Sometimes it's just better to junk something before you end up spending more money on it than the vehicle is worth. If it's a classic car you're restoring that's one thing but to spend thousands of dollars on an old Jeep Grand Cherokee that's probably only worth a thousand bucks is pointless.

      4.7 is a timing chain engine. It does NOT sound that bad spinning over. Cam sensor has potential no signal. I personally would check for 5v to the sensor, ground to sensor and signal at pcm from sensor with a scope. If no signal at pcm on scope, its a bad sensor or a problem with the cam reluctor wheel. Pull cam sensor and spin over watching to see if reluctor wheel is spinning with a mirror or a bore scope.

    • @soupy031
      @soupy031 3 месяца назад +1

      @@mph5896 it doesn't matter how bad it sounds spinning over, I've had engines with broken timing chains/belts sound like nothing is wrong, all depends on where and how the piston contacted the valves, and it doesn't matter if it's a chain or belt, if the cam shaft is not spinning, that means at least a couple of the vales are open while the piston is moving, causing contact and bending valves. It is an interference motor, meaning there is no way there isnt valve damage. Best bet would be to pull the head and see how bad it is, if the pistons have minor damage u may be able to get a new valve train and get it back on the road, but in no way shape or form is it as simple as replacing the chain and timing it. That's just bad advice.

      @@soupy031 I can tell you 100%, by listening to that engine crank over the timing chains are NOT broken, AND the camshaft is turning.
      I am very familiar with those engines. In your original post, you called it a timing belt. 100% incorrect.

    God Bless you all! All glory to God! Turn from your sins and live for God! Romans 10:9 “if you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God rose Him from the dead you will be saved.”
