The global rise of afro house music | DW Documentary

- Afro house is here to conquer and to stay. And its growing global network of musicians proves it. The international music documentary produced by Rise traces the origins of afro house and explores its promising present and future. All across Africa, accomplished DJs are taking the continent by storm and inspiring international artists to venture into the world of afro house. They only need three things to make a club hit: talent, headphones, and a laptop.
In South Africa, electronic dance music is pop music. Afro house is everywhere - it resounds through clubs, cabs, barbershops and homes. Influenced by US house music from the 80s and 90s, it was here that afro house was born and developed from a wild mix of countless subcultures and musical styles. Its rhythm and melodies mirrored the early dream of freedom and hope shared by South Africans at the end of apartheid. Now its viral hitmakers continue to capture the imagination and hearts of music enthusiasts around the world. They spark collaboration across borders as well as the confidence to use whatever you have at your disposal to draw a crowd.
DJ Shimza, one of South Africa’s brightest talents and self-proclaimed “township boy with big dreams,” is a prime example of that. He has performed at some of the world’s most renowned electronic music events and clubs and even made President Obama’s summer 2020 playlist. But the self-made DJ, entrepreneur and producer cares about more than international accolades. Having grown up in Tembisa township, he is determined to make a positive impact on his community and pave the way for others to follow in his footsteps.
It is precisely this kind of community spirit and independent vigor that is enabling more and more African artists to make a name for themselves with afro house tunes. The music they play is as varied as Africa’s nations, tribes, languages - and sounds. In Angola, it is the up-tempo and energetic kuduro music that predominantly shaped the sound of afro house. Here, music and dance trends go hand in hand. DJ collective Midi Minds Kenya creates signature sounds by mixing electronic music with the voices of indigenous peoples. Their music not only evokes their country’s heritage, it preserves it.
But while afro house is firmly woven into the fabric of everyday life in Africa and has long left its mark on global mainstream music, it is often not given its due credit in the rest of the world. To change this, German DJ collective and music label RISE invites the finest afro house DJs to the heart of Berlin’s electronic dance music scene - enabling their audience to reconnect with house music's Black roots.
Featuring house music legends Osunlade, Louie and Anané Vega and German star DJ Henrik Schwarz, the 60-minute music documentary traces the origins of afro house and takes its viewers on a journey across continents. From South Africa to Germany, from Angola to Portugal, from Kenya to the USA and beyond: “Above and beyond - The global rise of afro house” showcases key players of the afro house music scene and looks at the many challenges left ahead on its way to the world stage.

I hope the algorithm gods have found and blessed you with this beautiful piece as it did for me. What an incredible, enlightening documentary. Well done! As a fan of jungle, drum n’ bass, nu skool breaks, and deep house, I can now add afro house to that list! 🙏🏽
I’m glad they gave Osunlade recognition!! Definitely one of the founding fathers of Africa house music. Yoruba soul forever!
My all time favourite , I wish they gave joe clausell a piece too
love osunlade's music - exposed via the toronto scene and harvest festival. much respect!
Da Capo is very special... That touch is real.

good luck to them thinking they will earn any respect in thes scene , citing their skin color ...
in the past, noone gave shit about how anyone looks, what their gender is, what race they are... if ur tracks were good and u dj good, people liked ur music and wanted to go to club to hear ur sets....
all the music i listened to as a kid pre-internet era... i didnt even know how the artists look like... or what countries they are from (mostly breakbeat, jungle, dnb )

Bro house music is black Americans genre
Not sure a documentary on AfroHouse is complete without mentioning or featuring Black Coffee ☕️
we tried super hard to have him of course.
@@HyenahMusic how about a part 2 bro coffee’s missing badbox moblack I would love to see these kings being given they’re flowers they came a long way
Yes! I was wondering when the Black Coffee would come into the documentary.
I much appreciate him of course, but it's important to note that there's an entire culture out there that thrives with many other names. He just happens to be the most popular of the lot
he's smooth....
but really just spins boring deep house that white people love to act really boosie to while they snort some K and microdose mushrooms.
Never goes over 125, and never puts together anything that would keep the floor jumping until close...definitely not at afterhours either.

I love Amapiano, first track I heard was from Native Soul, that hard knocking bass is just insane. This is something unique and fresh. I'm rooting for SA artists to become big internationally and not Western artists and record companies stealing all their clout and profits.
THANK YOU DW! ... for the love.
This is amazing bro. Love how you guys push the culture
Afro house saved African music, From Kampala to SA. to Nigeria to London , Boooooommm
In South Africa , Revolution are the real pioneers of Afro House inspired by Dj Gregory
The comment I was looking for, it's amazing with all their success in the industry they have managed to stay under the radar and unbothered!
black coffee is here without being here.. his presence is felt in every moment of this joyful doc !!
DW is obviously the right channel to do this, if we don't consider South Africa which is the capital of Afro House, Berlin has to be the second Capital of Afro House and the work done by the likes of Hyenah deserves special mention.
But if you want to know more about Afro house, follow the likes of Da Capo, Enoo Napa, Culoe De Song, Black Motion, Lemon & Herb, Shimza, Caiiro, Kususa, Heavy K, Sun El Musicia, Afro Warriors (Angola) and obviously Hyenah (Berlin, Germany ); and of course Manoo (Lyon, France), MoBlack (Italy) Flyod Lavine (South African based in Berlin), Osunlade (USA)and obviously Black Coffee (Black Coffee is not exactly your typical Afro House producer but he sometimes makes Afro House.

I fell inlove with Afro House in 2006 and ive been hooked on it ever since. The extreme dark tribal sound that came from South Africa at that time is in my opinion the best kind of Afro House ever.
I actually thought afro house music originated from South Africa, because I have loved that music for many years. This documentary is such an eye-opener for anyone keen on the history and evolution of (African) popular culture in the 21st century. Thanks DW.
South Africa played a crucial role in the making of the genre
As a South African I can definitely say we've colonized house music world wide 👌

Afrobeats is Nigerian style 🇳🇬 of music but Nigerians also mixed amapiano (South African 🇿🇦 house) with Nigerian style to make Afro-amapiano.
Indian music has the most complex rhythms and beats. And European music has the most sophisticated melodies and harmonies.

End of story √
u mean SA right?
s/o the whole movement, vey inspiring! music transcends all boundaries and barriers for sure, big love!
About ten years too late, check out what Boddhi Satva was doing in Brussels/Paris 2012 - 2022 ; KMT in London was doing Afro-house nights since 2009. I even ran a special Afro-House night in Koln during the world cup in 2008 on the day of the game between Portugal v Angola. Afro house was even part of the first wave of music in the early 1990's with Afro-diziak, you just needed to know where to go to find it. Amapiano as its own music rightly emanated from SA, however it is kind of linked to apartheid. SA youth culture did not get the first wave of house, however when they got their computers, invented Kwaito...Also, many of the youth in SA were unaware of what was popping off in Europe, so they think they invented Afro-house. Music is a continual pass the parcel, big shout out to the Angolan kuduro scene and even the Ivorian coupe scene which all produced bewildering beats to keep us amped across the world.
Actually Afro House is older than Afro-dizak and goes all the way back to 1985 where it was originally created by black djs in New Jersy who spinned these original Afro House tracks in a club called the Zanzibar! the first Afro House track was called Ma foom Bey by Culture Vibe...

In Africa, it's only Angola and South Africa who embrace Afro House. I have been listening to House Music for years. I think Boddi Satva or Osunlade are pioneers. Africanism Compilations were huge here in South Africa.

A guy known as Skizo, a Botswana national, made significant contributions to this movement in the 1990s. He was associated with Kalawa Records. Kalawa Records: Also known as Kalawa Jazmee Records, it is an independent South African label that played a crucial role in shaping the musical style later known as Kwaito a form house inspired sound. Formed in 1992, it was founded by Christos Katsaitis, Don Laka, and DJ Oskido. The label’s name is derived from the first two letters of their respective surnames. Over the years, Kalawa Jazmee Records has been home to various influential artists in the South African music scene, including Boom Shaka, Trompies, and more12. Skizo’s involvement adds to the rich tapestry of South African house music legacy.
I’m over here grooving and boppin my head I almost forgot this was a documentary 😂
I loveeeeeeee Afro house!!!! The beats are so energetic. ❤
afro house is literally most depressive sub-genre of electronic music , maybe dark techno is the only one wich is more depressive sounding...
why would i go to a club ti listen to depressive music ?
im 3 minutes in and i dont hear any "afro house" , tune sounds like progressive house.. and blatant rip-off of Ten Walls style wich he formed years ago .
stop inventing new genres, wich is not needed..
everything out of the standard subgenres classifies as Progressive House , simple as that .
This entire movie seems somekind of woke equity diversity propaganda, based on pushing narratives and some race ....
in the past noone gave shit who you are... if u made good music or good dj, everyone listened to it.. or came to ur party to listen ur set...
and thereäs no global rise, US and EU doesnt give a shit, Russia neither, Japan neither, Chinese neither... so what global rise are they talking about ???
go woke, go broke. I guess white people should redefined all the genres as well... "White techno" "White Trance" "White House" "White dnb" "white jungle"
and you can go "afro jungle" "afro dnb" "afro house" "afro techno" ....
Do you understand how dumb you people sound ?????
True but credit to black Americans cuz house music was created in Chicago

Glad to see Afro House getting the recognition it deserves❤
Always a good day seeing Anane and little Louie Vega.
Individual did not realize that the afro house sound I'm going to concur that it exhibited itself in the mid-90s in places like DC Philadelphia and New York. A lot of the guys coming out of the UK with various groups stepping into the Philadelphia scene of the 90s and with record labels like 311 records King Britt Productions these things were bringing these beautiful afro house sounds in the mid-90s and influencing others so many others and so you know we have to realize there was even a Specs you could say they were in the 70s that had a afro how sound or afro-funk sound that ended up lending itself to certain samplings of these tracks into the new afro-house sound of you know the 70s 80s 90s to present day
Everyone one to be orignator of sound ... All we know is afro beats ... Makeing waves

Africa is the sound crib
There is no Afro house revolution without DJ Gregory.
I used to listen to tribal house back in late 90s to early 2000's it was very heavy on percussions. Bob Sinclar, Osunlade, Louis Vega and Kenny Gonzalez, DJ Gregory to name a few. Afro House has the elements of tribal, Deep, Soulful house and those African rhythmic sounds.
Was waiting to see Manoo Kossi on this documentary. . .”😢
He definitely is a major player!

A great documentary with nice filming, artists and selection.
However, there’s a huge misinterpretation in mass media between afro house and afro tech house. This documentary is about latter, actually. Afro house came from the tribal New York and Chicago house communities with such artists as David Morales, Ron Trent, and Timmy Regisford. Timmy founded the legendary club Shelter where afterwards a lot of rising afro house artists took place, as well as in other clubs in New York and New Jersey (it should be mentioned AMFlow, Mark Francis, Jihad Muhammad, Doug Gomez, to say the least). This afro house has strong bass drums, soulful vocals, and latin instruments.
At the same time, in South Africa there appeared such guys as Black Coffee, Black Motion, Prince Kaybee who made their own afro sound based on deep and soulful house with the kwaito past. Later, due to the tech house impact and ‘light’ sound of SA house overall, it became ‘afro tech’ or afro tech house which went viral in Europe and the USA. Afro tech often has progressive elements (as in trance), while afro house is closer to the deep house roots with a clear rhythm section.
Anyway, the straight 4/4 rhythm was widespread in Africa a long time before the house expansion: Ghanaian and Nigerian highlife, Kenyan benga, Congolese soukous, Malian and Guinean scenes from the late ‘80s, modern Mozambican music have that afro house feeling.
Everything I wrote is based on my deep long researches in house and African music as a DJ and vinyl shop seller, therefore it has my personal view, but I think it’s necessary to differentiate afro house and afro tech house, as they have their own sounds.
Peace and love from Ukraine.
Finally someone who knows what he is talking about. This recent ''afro house'' has NOTHING to do with what ''afro House'' means to a Househead
Would be nice to have more of this type of uplifting doc. The regular fare on DW is too dark and heavy.
As a white woman in her 40s who was in the rave scene in her 20s and African Dance scene in her 30s..I'm glad music has finally merged my two favorite things.
drum n bass or jungle?
@@mysteryY2K house, trance and techno! I love those other genres as well.
@@mysteryY2K Drum & Bass is evolved from Jungle both being closely interlinked but neither are considered or should be related to the African dance scene. Jungle, Drum & Bass is the most diverse multi cultural music genre primarily from the UK then becoming Global with heavy roots in the Caribbean Dancehall scene, if anything Afro Beats which is much slower in BPM is interlinked to Garage which came after with its roots in Chicago House
