The Real Dracula: Vlad the Impaler w/ Leif Pettersen - A True Crime History Podcast

- This episode explores the real Dracula, Vlad the Impaler, a 15th century warrior-ruler infamous for his extreme brutality and cruelty.
My guest Leif Pettersen, a former travel writer with Lonely Planet, has spent considerable time in Romania, and through his writing, research and wanderings, developed a special attachment to the real life Dracula. His book on the subject is part memoir, part travelogue and part history, and called: "Backpacking with Dracula: On the Trail of Vlad ‘“the Impaler” Dracula and the Vampire He Inspired". Видеоклипы
Your podcasts are excellent.
There is actually a tv movie called Dark Prince: the true story of Dracula. It's probably not as accurate as his book but it's about vlad the impaler as a human warrior with only a sort of nod/mention to the vampire legend at the end.
Good flick. Filmed in Romania with many Romanian actors and crew. There is also a Romanian historical drama about Dracula filmed, I think, in the 70s, but it is in Romanian.
Another great podcast, thanks again. Not sure that you'd find an author or something for the podcast about him. But if you haven't read or heard of 'the mad trapper of rat river' I think that's a mystery/story you'd really enjoy reading about.
Anyway cheers for another great podcast. Seems like a crime to me that you don't have more subscribers but they'll come.
Excellent suggestion!

Also, there is now a pretty accurate movie made by netflix with romanian actors but is in English. It season 2 of Rise of Empires : Ottoman .
The cast is very spot on, even if it is in English the qctors are mostly Turkish and Romanians so their accent makes it even more immersive in a way.
What is that WONDERFUL piano piece at the beginning of your podcast?
As a Romanian I have seen and heard a lot of documentaries and podcasts about Vlad the Impaler. I have seen a lot of mistakes, but this one is quite good, appart from the constant error. Dracul literally means the devil in Romanian. They were part of the order of the dragon (which is the same word in Romanian as well). So his father's name was a bit modified based on the fact that he was part of the order or the dragon but his name translates to Vlad the Devil.
Fun fact, in Romanian whoever someone got scammed or tricked or whatever , we say 'a luat țeapă' which means he got impaled, reminiscing of how Vlad used to invite very rich people that were injust and he would kill them after finishing the feast he prepared.
Why no mention of the fact that the Ottomans were Muslims?
Notwithstanding Vlad’s brutality, he did manage to prevent what might have been an even more calamitous environment from taking root.
Before I visited Bali in 1992 I bought a copy of the South-East Asia edition of Lonely Planet.
It was an invaluable guide.
It was not only ottomans he impaled.
“Resting terrifying face” 😅😂
It’s Hungary....not Hungry
Far too many facts are missing or wrong in this interview. I understand the time constraints, but Vlad's life is far more interesting than this retelling.
That is what he said and why Pettersen has a book. It’s a teaser.
@@DanManwaring I don't read fiction, but if I did I would prefer to read Van Helsing's autobiography instead.
You should write a book
