  • The long awaited Gen 4 remakes are finally here in the form of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. But their announcement left me with many concerns on if they could truly do the Sinnoh region justice, which came true for almost every single worry I had. This left me with a lot to be desired from these remakes to the point that I chose not to get them, and now I want to express how much better I think these games could've been.

I believe Masuda has some kind of complex when directing remakes. He directed Ruby and Sapphire, Emerald gets praised. He directed Diamond and Pearl, Platinum is the definitive Sinnoh experience. It makes me think Masuda will go out of his way to purposefully neglect the improvements that were made in the in the third versions, and I wouldn't be surprised if Masuda left out the improvements, content, and features that were made in Black and White 2 from Unova remakes. And while ORAS was directed by Ohmori, he is still Masuda's Yes Man and was probably ordered to not include Emerald's content.

Considering that the games didn’t have any story elements of the third game like the Johto and Hoenn remakes, there might be a small chance, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t make one.

I'm honestly surprised that you were having fun with Pokemon Swsh, and I am glad you had the time to play.
When my father had Pokemon Sword on his Switch, my brother and I were excited. But as my brother played (and completed) the game since then, I had beaten *ONE* gym before I completely forgot about the game and lend it to my brother.
Let me repeat that: *ONE* . *GYM* . And that is it.
Most of it is because I was aware that SwSh suck as a game and the NatDex controversy is just the final nail in the coffin that made me not like this game.
Anyways, your opinions on BdSp are the same as mine.
Gen 8 should have been way better than we'd hoped for, in my opinion. And until I'd played Legends Arceus, it's gonna stay that way.

You know another thing they could of also done is that they could of followed platinums story down to seeing dialga and palkia in the climax but did what SWSH did and make catching one of them be a postgame thing by also giving the player an introduction to Dialga and Palkia’s dimensions more clearly (with the dimensions being relegated to version exclusives.
They could do the whole distortion episode as your suggested with an expanded distortion world while also having another set of dimensions to explore as well which could be used as a means to battle iconic trainers from other generations after catching dialga/palkia to encourage revisits. Neat things could also be done to distinguish the two dimensions with Dialga’s dimension changing the visual style of the games to the original DPP sprites (thus giving gen 6 to 8 Pokémon (and 5 to an extent) a neat perspective in the og gen 4 style and palkia’s dimension could implement a Frankenstein like dungeon of iconic locations thus giving us a proper 3D perspective of the locations from gen 1 to 5.
But alas we live in a timeline where the gen 4 remakes are basically literal clones of diamond and pearl down to their faults which somehow they even managed to butcher some of the social elements the originals had (rip secret bases).

I only got BD because of nostalgia since D was my first Pokémon game and even though I liked them I still have a lot of problems. TMs break for no reason other than faithfulness which is stupid because the ORAS remakes didn’t do this and no one complained because no one liked limited use. Not having the Pt deck was also a huge issue for me because of not being able to get Rotom early and stupid stuff like Flint’s team which was fixed in Pt. That and stuff like the exp share still being the most busted and overpowered thing I’ve ever seen in a game because it makes everything except the elite four and Cynthia (if you don’t grind) a complete cake walk. This is an issue I’ve had since X and Y as the entire series is now insultingly easy and it seriously takes the whole series down a peg for me. The other prime issue I’ve had with the series is the overall lack of content I’ve felt with every game since X and Y save for ORAS and Sun and Moon, which is an even bigger issue since the games cost more now. And since the Pokémon games are main console games comparing them to main console rpgs like Xenoblade 1 and 2 and Persona 5 and the modern Pokémon games feel like rip offs in comparison. The previous remakes also felt like games from the generation they were made in like ORAS feeling like gen 6 and HgSs feeling like gen 4 along with adding a lot of new content, they did not do this with BdSp and instead made them feel like downgrades. After the disappointment I’ve felt with X,Y,Sw,Sh I’m basically not getting any more main series games (I’m interested in Legends Arceus but I’m waiting until opinions are formed on them before I get them). These remakes have also made me worried about what’s going to happen to my beloved Unova, it won’t ruin the originals for me but it will still feel like a lost potential.

To be honest as a person who grew up with diamond and pearl this remake/remastered hurt me badly. Due to the game being buggy on the day it came out, nothing really much change in the game, and the follow Pokémon is so slow that they can’t keep up with the trainer. The TMS breakable TMS again is really bad. Diamond and pearl with my first Pokémon game and I was hoping one day they will have the best remakes but… they turn out disappointing.

I didn’t know that the originals were that flawed until playing BDSP because I’ve never played Diamond and Pearl, and only saw gameplay of Platinum and it looked fun, so I bought both of them because I wanted to play a Sinnoh game.

Actually, about that point about being able to use Pokemon that didnt exist in the originals during their respective remakes... Only ORAS did that. And HGSS, but that only applied to evolution methods they couldn't restrict(Mamoswine and Yanmega, for instance). Most of the post-gen evolutions weren't usable in HGSS until postgame by virtue of the evolution stones not being obtainable until then(or in the case of location evolutions, not being obtainable at all). This, combined with both Kanto remakes(FRLG and Let's Go) outright denying any post-gen evolutions for a normal run at all, are indicative that the 'Faithful remake' problem has been an issue for Game Freak's very approach to remakes from the start. ORAS was the only remake to try something different(Allowing post-gen evolutions, modifying the character writing, expanding the lore with the Delta Episode), and even that still stayed loyal to some odd decisions with the originals(Wattson doesn't use Hoenn species in his Gym Battle, Magma Hideout from Emerald is ignored entirely, etc.).

Considering all of these incredibly questionable decisions... I think it would be best to just move onto another collectible monster series like, I dunno. Digimon or Megami Tensei.

I agree with everything you said, except for the difficulty of the fight against Cynthia. I've always thought that the Platinum version of that fight was harder than Diamond and Pearl's, not just because Cynthia's Pokémon had MUCH better movesets... but also because I think that the Togekiss is usually harder to deal with than some Gastrodon that can easily go down to a single grass type move. Now, yes... Diamond and Pearl's version of the fight had higher levels... but in my opinion, it wasn't enough to make the fight hard. Is it still fairly challenging? Maybe, but it's nothing compared to Platinum's version of it in my eyes. Other than that, I thought this was a great video. MAJOR thumbs up from me.

I need to say this because there is proof of this: the National Pokédex is available when you’ve seen all the Sinnoh Region Pokémon. It doesn’t have to be Post Game, you can transfer all Pokémon to a new safe file, beat Roark, win the double battle with Lucas/Dawn against the two Galatic Members, and finally head back to Sandgem Town to Professor Rowan’s lab to get the National Pokédex.

Maybe you should've been in charge of these remakes (I'm enjoying Shining Pearl so far, since I started my Pokémon experience late into Gen 6, and my biggest complaint is that they went back to single-use TMs, when those should've stayed forgotten for the rest of the franchise's foreseeable future).

*In response to How You Would've Made Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl*
Included all good updates and improvements present in the actual games: valid criticism.
Used Platinum as the groundwork: In what regards? Because if you give every character their BLOATED dialogues and prompts, forcing every player to mash A from dialogue fatigue worse than Sun and Moon, you're fired!
Used in-battle look all the time: Not sure how to feel about this one.
Feature Pokémon from later generations (mainly through Grand Underground): Pick and choose because some evolution methods (like Sylveon) wouldn't work.
Made Exp. Share optional or set trainer levels to compensate: You're fired!
Improved movesets for boss Pokémon (where possible): Why not just fix an NPC's AI?
Added "Distortion Episode": You wanna pad out the game with some of the slowest Strength puzzles, giving players a migraine with the Distortion World? You're fired!
    Updated character designs: valid criticism.
Added more post-game content: No thanks. I choose base DP.
(Possibly) given Dialga and Palkia some kind of Primal/Origin Form: As Game Freak should! Somebody get Spike Chunsoft on the phone because you Don't Ever Forget Primal Dialga from MD!
Finally included the unused Arceus event: it became its own game.

Honestly, I was pretty excited for these games (or at least hopeful), but once I got access to the Underground, I mainly just kept doing that. Now I’ve moved on to other games, still haven’t beat Gardenia in Pearl yet, and haven’t touched Diamond. I’m still excited for Legends Arceus, though, and from what we’ve seen, it’ll definitely at least be more interesting than these games.

Funny thing is that there are already two fanmade remakes of platinum that are infinitely better than bdsp, well kind-of. Renegade platinum is a fantastic rom hack of platinum that improves everything about the game. It includes infinite tms, every pokemon up to gen 4 is obtainable, the game is much more difficult with every gym leader having six pokemon and all the levels being increased, it's a great game for people who were dissatisfied by bdsp. There's also Sigma platinum, a mod for bdsp that aims to fix many of the complaints people have with the game. I don't know much about it, but it's probably better than bdsp.
