If my gecko wants me he lets me know by coming out of his hide and STARING o.o that's the limit of our communication. That said he's really bold and approaches everything. Including if he sees my dog near his cage .
you right..the problem with vet's is that most of their knowledge concerning herpetology is basic general knowledge unless u find a vet who specializes in reptiles or at bare min is either a hobbyist themselves or has experience with reptiles but again their knowledge tends to be on the medical side not husbandry and specific care. lessons learned, ask your vet questions...be specific as to why your attending, but would u call a vet prior to buying a a lizard..no...when it comes to any pet..do your research from multiple sources, forms, youtube, books, care guilds...etc i tend to always do my research and when it comes to cages i tend to make them run like it would in their natural environment..rainy and cold seasons, light sequences, ensuring full spectrum lighting etc. but before u buy do your research, ask questions, and know what your getting into. good advice
Most vets are not specialists in reptiles and that’s probably why they have the bad rep. I’m studying to become a vet and all we ever really learn about is dogs, cats, rabits and farm animals
@@wigglyworm6645 Yes it is, but there is a severe lack of true "exotics" vets. Some will say they have exotic experience but might've had almost no formal training with them. Most veterinary medicine students focus on small or large animal clinical practice, which has almost no instruction on exotics. It's a completely separate field of study than wildlife & exotics/zoo veterinary medicine with minimal overlap. Thus most "exotics" vets who do not have a dedicated exotic-only practice are not really qualified to treat most species.
as a vet student. we learn ABSOLUTELY nothing about husbandry. do not trust vets when it comes to husbandry UNLESS they own the animal in question!! and remember everyone, just because youre 1 gallon less than what is recommended DOES NOT mean youre a horrible owner. 20 gallon minimum for leos, i own 4 leos and i keep all in 30 gallons and they seem to be happy! its all about thr individual animal though
I have an African fat-tailed gecko which while not the same as a leopard gecko is highly similar in most regards. She has a 40 gallon tank because it's what was recommended when I looked online, but she only uses the area of a 15 gallon tank, the rest mostly goes unused because she heavily prefers the heated parts of her tank.
That might just be because she's nocturnal meaning that I don't see most of her activity, since I can hear her crawling around on the back wall quite often when I'm trying to sleep lmao
Reddit is pretty much the substrate police. Whether it be leopard geckos, tarantulas, hamsters or whatever the hell else you're into, your choice of substrate/bedding is WRONG, and you should FEEL BAD about it.
100% accurate but with everything. And there's never any leeway. The user at 3:32 had 11 downvotes just for saying that's what a veterinarian said was okay
I do wish vets got more education on reptiles. I believe that most do their best, but let's face it: most of their education is centered on mammals, and when it comes to reptiles they have to guess what is best in the moment.
i actually am going to vet school for specialization in reptiles exactly because of this reason. reptiles cant always get the help they need and often get misdiagnosed and mistreated by vets and i aspire to stop that trend
Im suspicious of neglect too in the case of the ant-eaten gecko - they said they took a 2-day trip and it was stripped clean? I don't buy it. I live near some pretty vicious species of ants and have watched them swarm a much smaller creature (already dead, nothing I could do) and still take longer for it to be entirely stripped from start to finish...it's fishy and strange that the entire enclosure is also empty save for the carcass. Idk it dont add up.
That’s what i was thinking! 1. it would take a shitload of ants to do that in 2 days. 2. thats it if the animal is not moving & i don’t know any that wouldn’t move when they get bitten.. That for sure isn’t 2 days & a healthy fat gecko
Yeah that is incredibly suspect. I could maybe see it happening in 2 days if the gecko had already died before some particularly nasty ants showed up, but killing it and stripping it to the bone is not going to be a quick process
they did also mention crickets... wouldn't be easy to skeletize a gecko but they could take some nasty chunks out that or dude is living on top of one massive fire ant colony which(from ants canada videos) i could see being able to pick a gecko(not a very large one) clean in 2 days
Well, if the guy lives in asian countries, it might have gotten attacked by asian marauder ants( carebara diversa ) they can strip clean an adult ball phyton in a week or so. And they have huge majors that are able to rip chunks of stuff clean.
I agree that it's probably more the owner then the animal, but my hognose seems to like to explore. So, whenever I notice him come out of hiding, I do take him out and watch him while he explores a small area with different textures. When he starts showing stress, I put him back (usually only about 15 minutes).
I've never owned a hognose but 15 mins seems short. I handle my ball pythons for about an hour at a time and my boa doesn't like being put back after he's out! Lol often longer than an hour with him.
@@rockstarenergy6480 I got him at about a year old, so he's a little edgy about human interaction. I have definitely had him out longer then 15 minutes and shorter than 15 minutes. 15 minutes is the average for exploring because my cats see him, and they think he is a toy.
Yeah, my leopard gecko asks himself to go out sometimes. Like he will come to the entrance of the terrarium and boop it or try to open it. I open it and he starts exploring. It depends on his mood.
My ball python is similar. Often after handling she will stay by the glass like she wants to come back out. She doesn’t ever really get stressed during handling though Me and other people have held her for nearly 2 hours and she was never at any point defensive or stressed.
@@kaissamsungsmartfridge886 it isn't. Reptiles are not so bright unfortunately. Snakes can eat themselves, geckos can stay still while being chewed on.
@@vikingraider58 i think it's because killing for meat is well,,,, for food and sustenance, while most of the time killing pets are only for the killer's satisfaction or fun If you're killing cows not for the meat but just because you enjoy it people would have the same opinion about it as killing pets
Actually, the leopard gecko liking the guy's freshly showered feet makes total sense, the skin of his feet would be warm and humid and prolly quite attractive to his little scaly friend.
That poor gecko 😩😭 like… who would do that to a helpless little gecko… luckily, I haven’t had any ants eat my animals. I mean, the first person sounds like he knows what he’s doing, and his brother is just insensitive and clearly doesn’t know the first thing about reptiles…like WHO shoots a gecko with an air gun!?
Lot of fucked up people in the world unfortunately my mother messaged me the other day with a picture saying someone shot her cat with a bb gun had a pretty decent hole underneath where her left leg connected with her chest/stomach, immediate vet visit of course and she is okay now but yeah it does happen
@@CaptileTactileLuke exactly and also leopard gecko bites don’t hurt to bad, mine bit me because I accidentally startled her when I was getting her food.
@@Mrholysymbol i had a dog named bolt the superdog when i was younger, it lived in my grandmas house because i lived with her at the time, one day i arrived from scholl and the dog wasnt there, my grandma said it escaped and she couldnt find it, i founded out some days ago that in reality someone shoot him in the back with an airsoft bb gun, it hit his spine and he lost the movement of his back legs, my grandma gave him away to someone who could take good care of him because she was old and i was too small to take care of an animal that needed special care like that, humans are cruel
Our house has an ant issue and they got into my crested gecko's enclosure at one point. No only were they attracted by the food, it looked like they were trying to set up shop in the soil as well. Luckily, I managed to get my gecko out and the issue dealt with before it could escalate. I wasn't sure if ants could harm it, but I didn't want to take the chance since it was really young, at the time.
It depends on the type of ant, how many there are, and the size of the animal being attacked. If it was any type of any that produces a sting/ bite that hurts you then they can kill small animals if there are enough ants. It also depends on how aggressive the ant species is as well. It was a good idea to remove your gecko just to be safe! even if geckos can eat ants that doesn't mean ants can't kill a gecko
You should look at Ants Canada here pn RUclips. The owner will tell you how yo keep ants in a ant enclosure.... the same trick... works on the outside to keep them out of a lizard tank. ;=)
The explanation in the Reddit thread was absolute bs. I mean seriously? First of all live crickets don't attract ants and even if they were dead it would take much longer than TWO days for ants to find this enclosure and do any damage to the reptile, if at all. This is a clear story of neglect.
Had the same issue as well, but luckily they were sugar ants (which might be what you had) so they didn't bother our crestie and we treated quickly and got rid of them
I feel the power aid thing might have occurred because some was accidentally spilled on the gecko. I remember leaving my bearded dragon on a table with a cup of (thankfully uncaffinated) root beer while I went to get chips from the pantry and coming back to find that he'd knocked it over and spilled it all over himself one time when I was kid. He was fine, but very sticky and in need of a bath
I'm addicted to reddit, which never ends well. I follow a ton of cat subreddits and there's an absolute plague of repost bots and sometimes cat abusers pop up every so often too. Recently i saw a post about someone who accidentally locked their cat in their car overnight, and they decided to take a picture of their cat screaming in the car and post it on a sub, thinking it was funny. Makes me sad :(
my cat got caught in a rope then started screaming so i ran to go get her out and my siblings were laughing about it. it makes me want to cry when i see people laughing at the pain of other living things, it’s so terrible. :(
I can't even watch this, it makes me sick. The person who shot the poor gecko deserves only the same response to both of his eyeballs. What a sad excuse for a human.
I think people mix up being handleable and social. My leopard gecko “enjoys” being held because I’m nice and warm but he’s certainly not social. My dart frogs however which can’t be held, are insanely social with each other and with me and it’s super interesting to watch same with my mourning geckos, super social but not really handleable
If your worried your dart frogs are posionous so you don't hold them I have good news they are only posionous in the wild because they get the posion form there diet In captivity as long as your not feeding them what gives them there posion there completely harmless if you don't hold them because there jumpy and small fair enough
@@idiotgaming6376 I’m not worried about the poison, I know they are safe in that regard but they also absorb everything on your hands including soap and that’s dangerous which is why I don’t handle them
Generally, vets are good and usually have good advice. EXCEPT FOR, and I speak from experience here, when it comes to reptiles. for reptiles you really need to listen to someone who specializes in reptiles and "exotic" pets. normal vets are usually only trained and educated to help cats, dogs, and sometimes birds.
Unfortunately vets (yes, even exotic vets) are busy enough keeping up with the advances of their job (health of the animals) that they don’t have the time to also keep up with the best husbandry practices of every animal which is why they’ll often have outdated care guides promoting things like 10g enclosures, sand/calcium sand, coloured bulbs, heat mats only…
Also they likely get paid by brands to promote or approve said dangerous products. Like some calcium sand has a “vet approved” label on them to convince people they’re safe because as that person just said they take the vet’s advice as gospel.
This video is really great. I think it does a good job at pointing out how random reptile advice can be. It also shows how bad keepers will expose themselves because they have no idea they're doing a bad job
Sorta unrelated but I just wanted to share that I got a 40 gallon for my leo (bought it new for $115 which is a steal where I live) and I’m gonna be decorating it based off of the Korok Forest in LOZ !! I have no one to share my excitement with so I’m sharing online lolol
0:55 it's not only the sub, there's a lot of other posts that go along with this one, and this wasn't only the brother's fault, that whole situation was a shitshow. shit like "see guys he can still walk so he's getting better!" no, he has a hole in his head.
We haven't had animals eaten by ants thankfully, but we did have an issue at our previous house with sugar ants that swarmed our crested gecko's food. I was very worried about them attacking our gecko but thankfully they were only after the food. We treated for them outside the tank and they eventually went away.
That first guys brother needs help quickly I couldn’t imagine shooting any of my animals with a pellet gun let alone one do small that it has a high potential to kill it. You can tell how evil the brother really is because he shot it right in the head obviously wanting to kill it that guy is actually insane.

Could you do a video about cohabing specific animals? So many of the videos out there just say "it's complicated but sometimes okay". Could you specifically describe how to cohab geckos like cresties, African fat tails, etc. And then different species like mourning geckos and dart frogs? So many people just do it the wrong way without doing their research
6:37 It's pretty practical for me. I have always fed her outside the enclosure since she was little so she has a positive experience being outside the enclosure. She always gets super excited and therefore always wants to go out of the enclosure.
My beardie has to take baths not because he's constipated, but because he thinks it'll make me give him more wormies if he smears his feces everywhere 🥲
Oh lord I remember when I posted on Reddit inquiring about how to house a male and a female bearded dragon, Reddit exploded on me telling me I was a terrible reptile owner I was and that they hope I get them taken away from me. I ended up ignoring them and sticking to my gut and going by their behaviour and they both lived together their whole lives and were fine with each other. They have both passed away recently due to illness but they had very long and happy lives. What I took away from Reddit that time and it’s 40+ comments of hate is that reptile communities are very hostile since there’s no one way to care for a living creature.
Uhhh I have questions...did they both pass closely timeframe wise and from the same sickness? I'm assuming no because I imagine you would separate them if you knew they were sick until the sick one was in the clear but I gotta ask out of curiosity lol
Regarding the powerade, definitely don't try it but I'm a falconer and we actually feed hawks powerade to boost their electrolytes when they get sick, so maybe it works with reptiles too who knows
"Have you ever had an animal eaten by ants" No, but reminds me: I watch Exotics Lair (love him), and he lives in a place with little house geckos roaming wild outside. One time he left a bin of crickets out and a gecko fell in it or tried to eat the crickets but fell in and was eaten alive. Wack. Shows how vicious crickets are.
Leopard geckos might actually be my favorite reptile. They’re so chill and have so much personality for lizards. When I go into my gecko’s enclosure he’ll climb right onto my hand.
my geckos are def more observation pets, when i take them out it’s clear they don’t wanna be in my hands. while my bearded dragon on the other hand is very interested in the new stuff around him.
I've met so many people who try to validate some really outrageous claims when coming to animal care with "oh well my vet said so" I just nod and smile at this point. Lol
I have a Leopard gecko named Smiles and one time my family and I wanted to go to Disney for eight days. At first we wanted to bring him with us but that wasn’t possible for travel reasons. The next option was giving him to my brother to watch over him but they couldn’t because of the apartment they lived in. So I was panicking a little considering I thought he may die. What I did was I put automatic water dispenser in his cage and then the night before we left I gave him a BUNCH of crickets to fatten him up and gave him a lot the day of too. The whole trip I was worrying about him because he was my first ever pet and I love him very much. When we got back he was thankfully fine. He did loose some weight while I was gone so I had to fatten him up again over the course of a few weeks feeding him every day. So, in conclusion I don’t recommend it but Leopard geckos can survive for more than three days if your going away. If you do have the option of having someone look after them I’d say that is a better option. Thankfully it’s been two months since I got back and he is super healthy again and gained the weight he needed.
My friend has the worst leopard gecko care ever, I’ve tried to take her gecko with persuasion and bribery, it has some kind of large mass on the head.. the inside of her ear is super bright red and they conveniently ‘forgot’ their vet checkup that I tried to force them to go to. They now continue to tell me that if she dies, they can just replace her. I’m still battling to save her poor goldfish and leopard gecko, and now she’s attempting to get a bearded dragon…
Just call her out on it, that’s straight up animal abuse. I’m getting the idea that she doesn’t care about animals and she just wants a cool pet to show off… IMO I wouldn’t want to be friends with someone like that. I’m so sorry this is happening.
The ant one gave me flashbacks to when I used to keep spiders, mantises, and stick insects as a kid and I woke up one day to have most of them be either already eaten or being eaten by ants because they were lured in by a decapitated cockroach :')
We have one in a 20 gallon, and on in a 41 qt tub with lid. The one in the tub is living it up. She has so much floor space and really enjoys it. We don’t see the one in the 20 very often. 😞
I wouldn’t leave a reptile unattended for a week I’d get someone to check on them twice a day at least in case like the lights went out or something like they don’t need to know how to care for them I’d just wanna make sure everything was still safe like the temps and stuff, so much can go wrong in a week
I keep together 4 leopard geckos in a 40 gallon and no issues have happened except for one feeding time where one thought that the other lizards tail was food and tryed to bite but missed. It used to be five leopard geckos but one got it's head stuck on a thing and died
I'm one of those people that call their reptiles "baby". Totally annoyed my father with that one time. They are also the reasons I'm never getting kids, I realized I'm constantly worried and freaked out (What if the shed goes wrong ? What if there's a blackout? Why didn't he eat this time?) Totally annoying helicopter mom.
While the editor was technically not incorrect, Alex was much closer to the correct word; anthropomorphize: attribute human characteristics or behavior to (a god, animal, or object). Personify is much more commonly used with reference to inanimate objects, where anthropomorphize generally refers to humanizing animals. Pronunciation is “anthro-po-morph-ize.” Good try tho editor lol
Most people listen to vets, but they are not HERP vets. It is like asking a GP about Heart Surgery. The logic is correct, trusting the qualified expert, but the expert they’re trusting is not actually the correct expert.
My leopard gecko is probably just trying to escape but at least once a day he climbs to the top of his enclosure and nudges the lid like he wants to get out. So I made a sort of ramp for him that goes from the top of his cage down to the desk and I let him crawl around for a while then put him back. It's one of those corner desks that's built into the wall so it's pretty big. He sometimes just hides behind my computer or under the ramp but most of the time he's exploring and climbing on things like my keyboard (or the curtains...). He's very busy when he's not sleeping or eating. He doesn't seem to be in a hurry, just kinda saunters around, climbing and licking things. Idk if that's normal for a leo.
Do a Ball Python one. The mixed information made me a stressed, paranoid new keeper. Now. I know what works best for us. Not 100% following online searches , Reptile groups, or guidebooks and just testing things out: all places of data conflict with their care so it seems impossible
Your best bet is preference testing with your snake and choosing what they like best. Obviously monitoring health and keeping things within reason. A youtuber named Lori Torrini goes into pretty good detail on how to do it and even has a weekly series on her own personal study of ball pythons. Mine has a setup that would enrage a lot of internet ball python experts, but he picked most of his setup, not me. Lol.
Caught a lizard when I was younger and put it down outside. I might’ve broke its bones or something because it didn’t move much. When I came back the next day the skeleton was oddly clean and there were few ants around it. Guess ants eat away at things nicely
The second guy: I started with a 10 gallon because same reasons. Quickly she got too big so I got a 20. 20 was doing just fine for her honestly but then I got a kitten who learned to get in the terrarium so now I’ve got a modified cabinet that’s probably like 40 gallons and she doesn’t use half the space.
It depends on the size of the gecko. A ten gallon may be fine for a smaller gecko, but if they get large like my girl unexpectedly did, then 20 gallon long or anything with enough floor space for hides and space for thermoregulation is good. As long as the gecko is content, feels safe and is not doing things that show that it is unhappy with its environment like trying to escape. Of course more room is nearly always better as long as you provide enough coverage to make sure your gecko doesn't feel to exposed. When your gecko feels safe enough to sploot out in the open when there are other options, then you should be good.
I feel like people just want to slap the word outdated on simple things sometimes just to say other people are wrong. ofc more room is better, but the reason a “minimum” is a “minimum” is because it is still just as effective as any other setup. social media has taught me to almost never show my tanks setups because someone will always have something bad to say, even if my geckos are healthy, have proper heating/lighting, and are seemingly happy and carefree. some people just want a reason to argue, even if there’s no animal being harmed. Lol sorry for the rant, I just had to say it.
@@catalayacoveexotics Keeping them in less than a 20 gallon long just means you're doing a bad job as an owner. In Germany it's actually illegal by law to keep an adult leopard gecko in anything smaller than that.
@@neonice I wasn’t saying it was a good thing or should happen, I like to keep mine in 20-40s depending on the adult size of the gecko. Notice how I was talking about the MINIMUM which is a 20. @@catalayacoveexotics I agree with you. Some people think keeping reptiles in a minimum required size enclosure is equal to abuse. It's like people cannot get their head around the fact not everyone can afford a 80+ gallon species-specific bioactive enclosure for their small to mid sized reptiles.
@@imugi-16 not to mention, the same people who think minimum is abuse also don’t take into account most breeders keep the geckos in rack systems or 20 gallon terrariums forever. meaning when they buy a gecko from almost anyone, they’re supporting what they consider “abuse”, But they don’t want to have that conversation.
I made a post about my humidity constantly going down and what I could do about it. Somebody commented to use sphagnum moss, literally phrased just like that. I said the substrate has some mixed in, and there are two sheets of once love moss in a landfill somewhere. He literally said "like I said, sphagnum moss". 10/10, much helpful very thanks.
Honestly my two leopard geckos are so different. I would give my one a tank as big as I could get if I could because he explores every night while the other just loves to hide and come out for food. In this case I think it matters on the gecko but I can't imagine giving my one anything bigger than a 20 because I doubt he would use the space
The ant thing happened to me. I am overseas and trusted my parents with my gecko only to find out they decided to cohab 4 of them in a 20 gal (after I told them not to) and then all 4 were covered in ants in the morning according to my mom.
When I lived in Louisiana as a kid I went out and caught anoles and kept them in a big aquarium I kept on the porch. I'd use a net to catch flies flying over my dogs poop to feed them lol they lived for a decent amount of time, till we got an extra hot day and they all fried. Still makes me really sad
Can you please do a video on hypovitamintosis? I’m working with 2 vets, he is a rescue. Supplementing with vitamin e and selenium. Unfortunately being told I may have to feel the insects to him with tweezers the rest of his life. I have searched RUclips high and low and have not found a single video on it :(
My vet that I take my reptiles aways airs on the side of caution with substrate and will almost only recommend reptile turf but most studies show that reptiles benefit from the stimulation from substrate
My family and I rehomed a leopard gecko a while ago, She lived a long happy life with us while we had her. Her owner was deported and the leopard gecko was left behind, the landlord had told us he didn't know what to do with it so we offered to rehome her.
With the not trusting vet thing. I studied animal care (translation says zookeeper but i learned only about farm animals, dogs, cats and horses but my school taught about rodents and reptiles also ) and my school had an aggressive leopard gecko. He lived in a class tank (don't know how big) with few chunks of wood as hiding spots and humid box which worked as a hide too and the bedding was just paper towels. The gecko would leave the humid box only to eat and would lunge out of the box and attack when cleaning his tank and one "reptile expert" who was visiting my school told them to put proper bedding in which fixed the aggression and the gecko was seen little more often after that. It was wild to me that the gecko was kept on paper towels when all 3 snakes, 4 other lizards, tortoise, fish and frogs had proper tanks as the coal was to have as "natural" enclosures as you can in a tank. Like yes leopard gecko could be on paper towels but the school didn't even know you can but bedding in.
Honestly I wonder if the people that house leopard geckos together do so because they keep them together in the Petcos and Petsmarts that I have seen. Same goes for the goldfish that are overcrowded in one tank.
I love how real you are lol. I wish you were also in the dog community, we need more people like you 😆 (Also leopard geckos want to be hikikomori lmao)
If it's small it should have these needs let be 1. It can streach and have a cage larger then itself 2. In can run for miles around the tank comfortably without getting stuck at a corner or have it barely able to run around 3. The cage should be 2-5x larger or more then the animal itself 4. It should be able to fit multiple human heads in it otherwise it's not big enough 5. The cage should be larger then a 10 gallon tank with no top opening 6. It should have hides and all needs taken care of in said tank
I'm glad you're good with 20 longs for leopard geckos. I looked at 40s...and they just seemed so massive....for my gecko who literally sleeps 16-18 hours per day (if we don't get him out), and sits in 2 spots. Lol. A 20 is big enough for the 3 hides and a water dish...plus all the decorations. A 40 would be ideal if I were going to create an entire backdrop with tunnels and cages, and have different hides in it...but, I'm not. Lol. I did initially start out with 10 g bc that was what I found when researching it. But moved them up pretty quickly. I migjt eventually get my more active gecko a larger one...like a 30g? But I've had no issues with 20...and not everyone has a massive reptile room that can hold several 40 g tanks. If I only had one or 2 geckos....maybe I'd do 40...I dunno. Like I said, 20 works well...
I remember watching Bondi vet and one of the vets said that out of 5 years of schooling they get maybe 3 hrs on reptiles. Majority of vets get taught more about pets with fur than they do animals with scales
You are 100% right when you say people anthropomorphize animals. It actually leads to worse care for the animals because they are not human. My cat doesn't meow much because I don't respond to his meowing at home. I don't talk to him, feed him, etc when he's meowing. He has not trained me to do something when he asks. The cat is perfectly happy- exercised, fed well, goes on walks, is very affectionate. But when I go to the vet or people meet him, there's always a comment that he's "very quiet" or "doesn't talk much" with the assumption something is wrong with the cat or I've punished him for meowing. I have also told guests not to try to play with the cat using their hands... He is trained to not consider human appendages toys. But some of my friends are like "awww but I want to play with your cat!" But they don't want to play in a way the cat will understand... Because they don't understand cats... TL;DR I agree and no cats don't need to be loud or human hand aggressive.
10 gallons imo are too small, at least a 20 gallon for a adult leopard gecko. They do get quite long & every time I see them in 10 gallons, it just looks too small for them

The veterinarian thing is so controversial. It really depends what they’re specialized in. There are SO many veterinarians that don’t know a single thing about exotics. I work in a school veterinary clinic that’s also 24 hour emergency & specialty. I work as an animal handler in the exotics department, with a technician and veterinarians that are specialized in exotics. The rest of the hospital is not permitted to touch the wildlife at all, and they see exotics overnight but usually call the on call exotics doctor for advise or make them wait for the next day, cause again, they know next to nothing about exotics
I would like to encourage people who see images like this to try to be civil. Look, I get it. Its easy to get mad and yell, and it feels really good to call the person a monster... But is that really gonna make them change? ask yourself, if you were doing something you didn't think was wrong, and then some smug guy wrote a paragraph about how evil you are, called you stupid, and said you shouldn't own pets. Would you, genuinly, be inclined to listen to him? Most people would not. Convincing people to do the right thing for their pet is more important than your ability to be smug, and your internet justice boner.

you right..the problem with vet's is that most of their knowledge concerning herpetology is basic general knowledge unless u find a vet who specializes in reptiles or at bare min is either a hobbyist themselves or has experience with reptiles but again their knowledge tends to be on the medical side not husbandry and specific care. lessons learned, ask your vet questions...be specific as to why your attending, but would u call a vet prior to buying a a lizard..no...when it comes to any pet..do your research from multiple sources, forms, youtube, books, care guilds...etc i tend to always do my research and when it comes to cages i tend to make them run like it would in their natural environment..rainy and cold seasons, light sequences, ensuring full spectrum lighting etc. but before u buy do your research, ask questions, and know what your getting into.
good advice
I'd say my leopard gecko is a really happy boy
Most vets are not specialists in reptiles and that’s probably why they have the bad rep. I’m studying to become a vet and all we ever really learn about is dogs, cats, rabits and farm animals
Isn’t that why we have exotic animal vets then?
@@wigglyworm6645 Excellent reply.
Best wishes on becoming a vet!!! Also great reply!
@@wigglyworm6645 Actually, in vet school, from what I’ve heard, they give you about one class about reptiles. You learn the rest from shadowing a vet.
20 gallon minimum for leos, i own 4 leos and i keep all in 30 gallons and they seem to be happy! its all about thr individual animal though
agreed^
As a vet student, I second this. Also the enclosures my uni keeps their animals in (the "pets", not the lab animals) totally suck lol
No offense but aren’t you supposed to add 5 for each animal when co-habbing

I do wish vets got more education on reptiles. I believe that most do their best, but let's face it: most of their education is centered on mammals, and when it comes to reptiles they have to guess what is best in the moment.
The knowledge they have is closer to what big pet store™️ tells kids than proper care.
i actually am going to vet school for specialization in reptiles exactly because of this reason. reptiles cant always get the help they need and often get misdiagnosed and mistreated by vets and i aspire to stop that trend
Not even mammals. Just dogs and cats half the time it feels like
@@kanedashoutaro You got this! I love the cause you’re going after 💗💗
Im suspicious of neglect too in the case of the ant-eaten gecko - they said they took a 2-day trip and it was stripped clean?
I could maybe see it happening in 2 days if the gecko had already died before some particularly nasty ants showed up, but killing it and stripping it to the bone is not going to be a quick process
they did also mention crickets... wouldn't be easy to skeletize a gecko but they could take some nasty chunks out
that or dude is living on top of one massive fire ant colony which(from ants canada videos) i could see being able to pick a gecko(not a very large one) clean in 2 days
and it was a plastic container ants could still get in from the lid but it would let a lot less ants through and make it harder to strip
I don’t personally own any snakes, but I do think you are doing a good job of taking care of your’s.
My ball python is similar. Often after handling she will stay by the glass like she wants to come back out. She doesn’t ever really get stressed during handling though Me and other people have held her for nearly 2 hours and she was never at any point defensive or stressed.
Those must've been some massive, hongry monster ants to entirely skeletonize a gecko in the span of two days

While they also do dry up rather easily so that's another concern

“They won’t to be left alone, in a dark space”
Today I learned that I, am in fact, a leopard gecko.
8:54 threw me off guard with mays theme from ggs

The first post, the guy actually did kick his brother out and got the surgery for his lil guy but I haven't seen an update yet bc I forgot his user
I have searched RUclips high and low and have not found a single video on it :(
Likes dark places? Check. Likes to be alone? Check. I am a Leopard Gecko.
"Bullet" I know this misses the point but there's a huge difference lol this definitely did bullet damage thoo
Both are projectiles made to be launched out of some kind of firing mechanism I don't see a huge difference there but I do get your point
My vet that I take my reptiles aways airs on the side of caution with substrate and will almost only recommend reptile turf but most studies show that reptiles benefit from the stimulation from substrate
Him: “oh I don’t wanna be in a dark space by myself!!!”
Me: I do I’m in my bedroom with the lights off no one in my room watching this video
Your editing in this video made me spit out my drink at work lmaooo
My family and I rehomed a leopard gecko a while ago,
She lived a long happy life with us while we had her.
I wish you were also in the dog community, we need more people like you 😆
(Also leopard geckos want to be hikikomori lmao)
Weeb spotted 👀
If it's small it should have these needs let be
1. It can streach and have a cage larger then itself
2. In can run for miles around the tank comfortably without getting stuck at a corner or have it barely able to run around
3. The cage should be 2-5x larger or more then the animal itself
4. It should be able to fit multiple human heads in it otherwise it's not big enough
5. The cage should be larger then a 10 gallon tank with no top opening
@@nightinggale6470 Dude stop commenting this one every single comment lmao 20 gallons is fine 40 gallons is excessive for a single gecko
I remember watching Bondi vet and one of the vets said that out of 5 years of schooling they get maybe 3 hrs on reptiles. Majority of vets get taught more about pets with fur than they do animals with scales
The biggest takeaway I’ve gotten from this channel is don’t get a reptile and I’m pretty sure that’s the correct lesson to be learned.
Who in the blinking blue blazes shoots their own pet gecko with a freaking airsoft gun?
Well it wasn't the owner that shot it, was apparently their sibling who was angry that it bit him...incredibly stupid and cruel regardless
*posts on reptile vid to stroke own ego of owning a cat correctly??
In my city I know a ton of people who have reptiles but we don’t have a single exotic vet…how does that even work!
10 gallons imo are too small, at least a 20 gallon for a adult leopard gecko. They do get quite long & every time I see them in 10 gallons, it just looks too small for them
I realize that leopard geckos wanna be left alone but as soon as I walk past mines tank he comes out and stares at me until I pet him ;-;
I really appreciate your channel so much. I just got a little baby albino leopard gecko and i made the mistake of getting a new pet when i also have a lot going on in my life and not much free time. Watching your videos has brought me some happiness I desperately need so thank you. You’re the best.
I once had a lizard (don’t remember the type) and my brother gave him to many crickets and they ate him :/
I would like to encourage people who see images like this to try to be civil.
Convincing people to do the right thing for their pet is more important than your ability to be smug, and your internet justice boner.
i just bought a ten gallon tank and all the supplies for it earlier this week im going to get a male leopard gecko maybe a female aswell but ill probably just get one, but i will upgrade the tank in the future to maybe a 20 long or so. I started out with just an aquarium with a few cichlids in it then i finally got a pac-man frog and im going to get a leo for my other tank soon
Can you imagine coming back from a two day trip to find a leopard gecko SKELETON?! 😰😰😰
