@@TheFran2555 The Throne of Glass series honestly has more substance to it than acotr. Book three of ToG is when things start to get really good. But I can understand why people wouldn't want to wait that long for a series to grab them. I liked books 1 and 2, so it wasn't an issue for me. (Honestly, the prequel novellas are very good, and I read those before I read the main series. Those were what convinced me to read it).

I bought the first Mortal Instruments book assuming I would love it, took ages to finish it, and couldn't continue with the series. Partly because I genuinely just didn't enjoy it and found the writing really uneven and characters one dimensional and Mary Sue-ish, and partly because a writer friend filled me in on Cassandra Clare's history of being a bully, scammer, and plagiarist in fandom.
She used to go by Cassandra Claire and was a mega-popular and infamous Harry Potter fanfic author in the 2000s and got her first book deal through that and other connections (which is cool imo!) She allegedly changed her writing name so that when people googled her, they wouldn't find all her previous controversies. Interestingly, she plagiarised herself when writing the first MI book. There's a passage at some point that's almost word for word from her most famous fanfic. (I don't personally take issue with this, it's just funny)
There's a decent writeup on the /r/HobbyDrama subreddit, but you can also find a ton of info by googling "Cassandra Claire" or "Cassandra Clare controversy."
I don't personally suuuper care about the fandom stuff, because it's very very old, but I 1) get why people would and 2) know authors in the writing circles she ran in a few years ago and they've all told me she's really rude unless someone's famous or well-connected. :( That's 100% anecdotal obviously, but it's where I'm coming from.

I agree with you on most of these, but I do love the Nevermoor series. I don't usually love middle grade, but these remind me of the feeling I got reading Harry Potter (not the story though of course, which is unique). There is a bit more of a magical school element in the second one, but I think it is totally its own story. Not everyone has the same tastes though! I need to become better about giving up on a series when I'm not enjoying it. I usually force myself to read until the end. I think I'm giving up on Throne of Glass. I really don't have any desire to finish it.

I would love to see your reaction to the infernal devices series! That one has only 3 books and is much better than the mortal instruments. I can honestly tell you that the problems you had with the first two books only get worse and in my opinion reading them without a nostalgia aspect makes them literal garbage to the point where its just flat out awful and painful to read. I pushed through them and I wish I hadnt because they are so not worth it (which sounds terrible i know but true). The infernal devices on the other hand doesnt have those icky problematic elements and is brooding so its a fun series to read - at the same time though, i dont think you would love it or anything but it has all those ya tropes that you could make fun of and it would be a fun video without having to go through the absolute torture of the mortal instruments.

I felt a bit indifferent towards the first Nevermoor book, partly because, as you said, it has no school setting! But I loved the second book! It does have the life at the magical school and it actually does give me Harry Potter vibes, both in terms of setting and humour. The third book is coming out next month and it's my most anticipated book release of the year! Hopefully I love it just as much as book 2. The premise sounds fascinating though!

Read the first book, absolutely HATED it. It's currently my most disliked book in my collection. Doesn't help that people who recommended it to me told me the second book multiplies every problem I had with it.
I MIGHT try the spinoff though, since it seems to avoid one of my main problems with the main series (the main character) and I don't really dislike Rothfuss' writing style.

Ah Sarah J Maas...I'm gonna finish the ToG books cause my friends swear they just keep getting better, but I never made past book2 of the court series so not gonna bother with that since those don't get better and I seriously hate Nessa.
I never read You but the show is so good! Definitely finish it.
Lifelike was such a disappointment. It was such a chore trying to get through it and the ending just pissed me off.
Idk if I'll finish Cruel Prince either. I also couldn't be bothered with Cinder.
Stranger The Dreamer though :( I really liked those! The writing is so lovely and the world/magic and character development is excellent. The romance is kinda cringy but wasn't as much of an issue for me.
Oh, since you love magical school you NEED to read Awakening of Ren Crown. It's magical University and just everything about it is amazing.

But yes, these books have all the YA tropes you could think of, so I think it'd be a very fun video!
Maaaybe you'd enjoy The Infernal Devices? The plot is meh and I hate the love-triangle but Will and Jem's friendship is * chef's kiss *.

Given how little you like romance in your books, I doubt you will find any of those Cassandra Clare series enjoyable. Disclaimer: I haven't actually read any of them, I am just going off Piera Forde's vlogs about them - from her videos and the comments, it sounds like the main draw of the books is the relationships. Some family but mostly romantic? Idk.
I wish there were some decent books based in videogames! I am, as a rule, extremely wary of anything marketing itself as such. However, I do recommend the Otherland series by Tad Williams, although it is based in a kind-of-videogame-but-not-really, closer to Snow Crash than Ready Player One.

I think you should consider reading Restaurant at the End of the Universe before giving up on Douglas Adams--our reading tastes seem so similar, I would be surprised if you didn't like it. I do agree, there is a certain amount of absurdist humor that was hard to follow in the first one. I felt that it continued, but made a lot more sense in the second book.

Not planning on finishing the Court of Thorns and Roses. So didn't care about any of those characters. Also not planning on finishing the Book of the Ancestor series. I didn't find either of these series were interesting enough to slog through the rest of them. I read the first of the Mortal Instruments and figured it out about halfway through, which is a pet peeve of mine, especially when it is an annoying twist. I also don't think I am going to finish the Divine Cities Series. While the first book was all right, it didn't really blow my socks off. It sort of began to feel like the City of Brass and An Ember in the Ashes.
