Good post. Compared to today's hitters, John's soft hands and easy stroke stands out. He claims he played his best golf drunk, just like he shot his best pool drunk. What an original. What a life. He lost $55 million gambling over the years. And his father was a violent asshole who beat him for the hell of it when he was kid.
I'm curious where the hell he got 55 million dollars to begin with. Golf back then wasn't the payday it is now. Pretty sure his PGA championship only got him 200k.
Crazy to think he was the ninth alternate to get into this tournament and he didn’t know he was playing for sure until the morning of the first round. Drove himself overnight to get there. Then he does this. No practice rounds. On the course Nicklaus declared the most difficult he’d ever played after three practice rounds of his own. Absolutely wild.
If this guy didn't have so many demons he would have been a surreal phenomenon. He still managed to be a beloved legend anyway despite the odds. Love you JD.
Very likely the sweetest, most powerful, elegant and in-control golf-swing there ever was. This was a thing of beauty. Grateful I got to watch it. Tragic shame Daley found booze and women. God made him for the game of golf. What a thing of wonder to watch. 170 yard pitching wedge? What? Insane. The putting, too. Masterful. And this was over four rounds with the world watching. If Daley had Tiger's dad....who friggin knows. We still love you, John.
In a parallel world, John Daly becomes a golf superstar, becomes #1 in the world, wins several majors and several dozen tournaments, and lives happily ever after with his wife Betty (pictured at the end). The stuff fairy tales are made of, but he had a lot of people believing in him that week... it was truly a magical moment in golf.
John plays his way his game at his speed worked for him this day seen him at the Shell Open TPC Woodlands just incredible past parallel swing on the 17th and just CRUSH IT !
When his timing was on he was in a different league. Then he goes to Scotland in 95 and puts on a friggin clinic and showed anyone with a doubt that he was no fluke and he had a complete game.
Very few people know the rest of the John Daly story from this miracle weekend for him and most tragic for one family. A storm rolled through Carmel, Indiana, during the first round of the 1991 PGA Championship, requiring tournament officials to evacuate the course. Spectator Tom Weaver was walking to his car when a bolt of lightning struck him in the chest, killing the 39-year-old fan. He left behind a wife, Dee, and two pre-teen daughters, Emily and Karen. Days after his breakthrough victory, Daly wrote a check for $30,000 and sent it to Dee Weaver, asking her to set up a college fund for her daughters. The gesture surfaced publicly long after the fact. “For him to win this iconic tournament and to be so selfless and share his winnings with us, it does shed a light on his true character and what he values most,”
Unbelievable. I had no idea he was that good. Most of what I've seen is glimmers of great drives but nothing like this pure talent. It was like a good omen and an exhibition of what was to come, not from him, but from someone else.
the greatest major ever. Notice how the announcers dont know who is is!!! "boy, does he play fast!". The announcers have no idea who this guy is. He just came out of nowhere and crushed the competition with his terminator sunglasses, cigarettes, and a driver made from a miraculous substance from space called "kevlar". There will never, ever, ever be another Jon Daly.
Jake Martinez I think 5 majors is a reasonable guess. If he has a normal career without addiction. You gotta figure a guy this good is gonna play like this 5 times. I think Daly’s perfect career 5 majors 17-20 wins on tour.
John daly plays with pure feel and heart, it defines you have to play your game of golf! I don't hit the ball far but it all depends on course management
Reckon you gophers now a days would be 5 handicap higher with them fancy shafts and big heads . Balls are big reason. Tiger did it. John did it too. Beast of gopher. I seen a guy hit his original time bubble over 350 carry. Usually professional was ball
why would they have the prestigious PGA Championship at that crooked stick place? is that a championship course even? that was his home-town golf course , is that fair?
Daily is, and always has been a head case. In his day, if he could control himself he was very good. As a whole, over his career, he WASTED his talent.
If you call Johns game wasted talent your a fool He has lived a life most people can only dream about he is happy with it the only waste here is your spew
The point at which the USGA/RA should have said he hit the Driver and 8i how far? Dial it back boys. But of course, manufacture $$$ clouded their judgment.
First try at a major, first win. Just about the most difficult feat.
Way to go John.
It was actually his third, first try at the PGA though

Billerbong Daly makes a ton of money. He’s a marketers dream. Ppl love him no matter how he plays.
Keegan Bradley pulled it off on his first try

One of the best wins of all-time. We love you, John!

The peoples champ.
Bubba Watson is probably a good benchmark
A legit phenom. Mozart of the golf swing. Never seen one better. And yes, I am a Freddy Couples fan. But still...Daley's swing was endowed by God.
He’s great because of the demons. Ask Tiger

John is the workin man's champion, always has been.
Dictionary definition of being in the zone

DanielSong39 He definitely had the potential
His first wife was Dale Crafton but I get what you’re saying
John plays his way his game at his speed worked for him this day seen him at the Shell Open TPC Woodlands just incredible past parallel swing on the 17th and just CRUSH IT !

Awesome performance. Daly on fire.

The simple fade to black at the end is classy.

You wouldn't have to wait long, Phil came along next year
He was incredible, but yes, pureeeee talent...

Best part is seeing Jack Nicklaus' expression at 5:00. He's convinced he's seeing the next legend.
It was great watching him!!
Ties my favorite moment in sports next to the 2011 Cardinals WS game 6
He actually had a reallt good wedge game
What a man
Man …he just showed up,kicked ass, and left
He was in great shape then
Chairman Daly --- Business in front, party in back
He could have been the best ever...
william elliott lets not get crazy

Worldwide* not tour
Jake Martinez he was the longest hitter, with a great putting stroke...who does that sound like?
@@austinlang4540 That sounds a lot like Phil, and yes Daly had that level of talent
9th alternate and no practice round.
Its a shame he never made or got picked for the ryder cup
Only Phil Mickelson has as soft a pair of hands as Daly.
But Daly putts better than Phil. Daly was a true natural.
Dexter Haven Phil has always been a better putter than Daly.
I'm surprised that woman wasn't headed for the bank instead of greeting him at the green.
She was, but suddenly realized she didn't have the check yet.
Year later Betty blew town with those earnings
I wish everyone played this fast
Man......what a player...........
John can beat any golfer on the planet on any given day.
there seems to be this annoying glitch silence in the footage. Is that just me or the video..?
Bestios10 it's the video
thats the snake venom slowly acting on your brain zone
its the video
She comes running after the last putt, screaming ‘where’s my half?’ 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Reminds me of Brooks Koepka a little
John daly plays with pure feel and heart, it defines you have to play your game of golf! I don't hit the ball far but it all depends on course management
@13:34, "I'm just going to go out and fire at the hole and see if I can't win this thing".
👍 but it would be better if you upload the full final round coverage
Was he longer than Bubba Watson and Brooks Koepka?
irritating to have other video thumbnail in the left corner.
Mike Johnson use the x button
I tee the ball up. Usin' man-sized clubs.
What's John doing now?
Still plsying
Reckon you gophers now a days would be 5 handicap higher with them fancy shafts and big heads . Balls are big reason. Tiger did it. John did it too. Beast of gopher.

What...the...fuck....did you just say
24:31 gold digger alert
What in the cup at 1446
Now younger people know what it was like to watch Sports without HD
At 1:24 that is a 7 iron not a 9 iron lol
Will Blalock That's a Ping Eye 2 9 iron...not a 7
Shame he choked on 17. I wonder if his career would have turned out differently if he hadn't.
Jonathan Ferguson what do you mean
What shit are you high on? He won.
why would they have the prestigious PGA Championship at that crooked stick place? is that a championship course even? that was his home-town golf course , is that fair?
Harpoon_Bakery that was not his home course. Bud. He never played it before then
Harpoon_Bakery it was not his home course it’s a championship worthy golf course in indiana. Hosted the western Open a few times in recent years
Daily is, and always has been a head case. In his day, if he could control himself he was very good. As a whole, over his career, he WASTED his talent.

See his alimony ran up to hug him
Golf should go the way of MLB and mandate PGA tour pros to use wooden woods again.
schwarg why
Love the sound of persimmon.
Daly plays fast? MANY MORE golfers, pros and amateurs alike, should play fast - or at least faster.
Davis Love and Freddy couples were longer than he was back then.
Michael S Daly led the tour in driving distance in '91...so you are not correct.
put the pipe down dude
Michael S No one over power a golf course like Daly in that time.
Love and Couples won as many majors as Daly combined
Both of them were much more consistent than Daly though
The point at which the USGA/RA should have said he hit the Driver and 8i how far? Dial it back boys. But of course, manufacture $$$ clouded their judgment.
Mad cause you can’t carry your drives 200 yards
Roller Skates just get you there faster..........
