Not the things he really wants, like changes in the format of the WCCC. He has been asking for changes for years. Only now they agree to meaningless stuff like clothing
Nepo was on backfoot. He has lost world title so many times he wouldn't have courage to say 'No' even after coming back from 2-0 against arguably the greatest chess player ever. Plus they have good relationship personally as well. I can understand Nepo's dilemma. The guy didn't even win candidates last time despite staying unbeaten. Ding snatched victory from him in a world championship. He recently lost a tournament to Magnus in Final. Also his blunders of first world title challenge will still be in back of his mind. He was going to take it.
I don't feel cheated by the players at all. The games were amazing and if anyone is to blame, it's got to be FIDE for not having an Armageddon kick in at some point
It was a thriller. A lot of comments on lichess chat before finals games was "Congratz to Magnus". After 0:2 it only intensified. And then Nepo comes back with 2:2. That was awesome. And then 3 draws which were played and not just agreed on. I kind of can understand why Nepo agreed when Magnus offered to share. Can't recall when, but I think shared first already happened in some more or less big tournament (or at least with big names attached).
Why didn't they simply play the tiebreaker in which one person chooses white or black and black wins on a draw/white has to win? That is done in a zillion tournaments.
The shared Tokyo Olympic gold happened in the men's high jump event. Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy both cleared the height of 2.37 meters and had no failed attempts up to that point. When the bar was raised to the Olympic record height of 2.39 meters, both athletes missed all three attempts. Instead of having a jump-off, Barshim suggested they share the gold medal, and Tamberi agreed. This was an incredibly rare and heartwarming moment of sportsmanship and friendship. It was the first time since 1912 that two athletes shared an Olympic gold medal in athletics. It was a beautiful display of camaraderie and mutual respect.
only because the rules allowed it, Magnus knew full well that it was not in the rules to split 1st place in the Blitz championship, it disgraces the sport because if everyone did that there would be no sport sharing a high jump medal was because they both reached the same height with the same number of fouls preceding it, that is why it was rare, that is the only reason they could share the gold medal, same thing does not apply to chess
I'd say, "co-world champions." Auburn played Syracuse in the Sugar Bowl in 1988 (US college football). The Auburn coach Pat Die went for a tie, with seconds on the clock, rather than a win, earning him the nickname "Tie Die." In pro football, there can be no ties; but only overtime. It is hard to know the mental exhaustion Magnus & Ian were under, tho. The outcome wasn't considered ignoble, but Auburn fans did think he should have taken a risk on the win; and sent him many orange neckties (one of the college colors, the other being a medium dark blue) in the mail. Maybe, to prevent grueling ordeals for the chess players, they should have a limit on tie breaks. Still, I thought the comparison a bit humorous.
Magnus in the last 3 years suffers from both winning or losing the final games. If he wins his opponent becomes very sad, if he loses he himself would be sad. I see a shift in Magnus, he no longer wants to see his opponents sad.
The term is Shared Champions. It used to happen a lot in rugby, for example, and I have to say I really love it 🙂 And it's clearly not against the rules otherwise it wouldn't have happened. It's just that there is no rule against it, so it is possible
I feel like it is time for agadmator to add the eval bar. It gives the audience a chance to quickly validate their understanding about a position. One of the fun parts of watching a chess game is when eval bar quickly keeps jumping, specially during time pressure.
In my own games i have found this setup to be incredible for white, because if you dont unpin the queen prematurely then the bishop gets to pin it for a long time, and if the bishop comes to g4 after you move the queen in that position then the pawn is no longer pushable because the knight goes to d2 and then f1 and you have an incredibly powerful shell holding your position together.
i guess Fischer also only wanted a draw with Karpov back then and was trying to negociate 2 titles so that he can keep sponsors and not deal with strange venues) - lets all be friends
It happened at the olimpics for an other medal too. It's nothing new tbh. When 2 people feel like they are both equal they might propose this sharing first thing
its completely different to the high jump, dont even start with that comparison, what Magnus did was turn the Blitz championship from a professional sport into a mafia backed gambling den game
Share the prize money, make Nepo a world champion, and ensure you don't lose when the momentum is against you and you've had the worst of the four draws, and make Fide bend the knee - possibly Carlsen's greatest ever move. ... But this relegated chess from a sport to a mere parlour game. And Fide is just as much to blame.
As with Barshim and Tamberi, the two had played evenly with each other throughout, and agreed that it was unworthy to declare a championship based upon what would inevitably be nothing but a slight blunder by an otherwise equal player in a tie breaker round.
I liked this ending, it is much better than the Armageddon that I hope will soon disappear. Moreover it is a blitz title, in the past blitz tournaments were not considered really important. Happy new year to everyone!
Hate his ending. Chess had a reputation of being boring and mostly draws. Why would anyone want to watch chess live, the players don't even want to be there
I think it's okay that they shared the gold medal. But I would prefer if there was a rule that they had to play armageddon instead of playing draw after draw.
So Magnus can't share his birthday cake but can share world title to Nepo 😂 Context: Magnus was asked whether he would share his birthday cake to Nepo during 2021 world championship. He said no.
There was the Olympic high jump competition in 2020 between Tamberi and Barshim where they agreed to share the gold medal after matching each other through multiple jumps. Both are Olympic champions. Magnus is not known for his mercy at the chessboard - if he thought that he could win he would have played for a month. Magnus and Nepo had both defeated many top players on their way to the final, had both drawn blood from each other but ultimately had matched each other. Both they and the tournament arbiters were all in agreement with a decision to share the world title and they are both deserved World Champions.
It’s great to see Fide under control. But I foresee certain questions. If I tie with one, and another challenger ties with the other, will there be 4 world champions. And if this continues, how many years of this will pass before everyone is a blitz WC? To become unified WC, do I have to defeat both of them? If I only defeat one, do I have to share the title with the other? If I defeat one, someone else beats the other, can we both agree to be champion? Can I agree to be champion with everyone I play against, by performing bong cloud draws? Etc 😁
Little bit of context Magnus has won 5 games in a row before final with Nepo and then blasted him games 1 and 2 for 7 f’ing win streak. Everyone including Nepo thought he was getting swept. Then he draws a little blood in game 3 and came up with brilliancy in game 4 to snatch victory from jaws of defeat when he was looking at mate in 1. Who the fuck has beaten Magnus twice in Blitz knockout especially with Black in 2 straight do or die situations? That’s insane. Then fight 3 straight draws against final boss? Nepo deserves this in spades. He was obviously in form of his life and cards all aligned for him. As for Magnus understand you don’t want to lose your last world title after winning 7 in a row and being up 2 there will be stench of choking in the chess world. Time is way late it is literally New Year’s Eve, venue MUST BE CLOSED and in this context between two of the very best chess players in the world more draws are extremely likely when both sides are not incentivized to risk with a WORLD TITLE on the line. So of course this result in context and with some thought was only fair outcome and as usual Magnus was smart enough to see it and offered. If you’re Nepo you don’t turn that down. Chess gods bailed you out in that final game you take this with both hands.

Magnus in the last 3 years suffers from both winning or losing the final games. If he wins his opponent becomes very sad, if he loses he himself would be sad. I see a shift in Magnus, he no longer wants to see his opponents sad.
Spot on
A humanistic shift, eh?
Nah he just got steamrolled by centennials and threw a tantrum over pants
In the 2024 he won a lot of tournaments
We all know Magnus just wanted to share his prize with Nepo as a new year gift.
The term is Shared Champions. It used to happen a lot in rugby, for example, and I have to say I really love it 🙂 And it's clearly not against the rules otherwise it wouldn't have happened. It's just that there is no rule against it, so it is possible
Magnus to Nepo - "Finally, a worthy opponent. Our battle will be legendary!"
I feel like it is time for agadmator to add the eval bar. It gives the audience a chance to quickly validate their understanding about a position. One of the fun parts of watching a chess game is when eval bar quickly keeps jumping, specially during time pressure.
Agad: "I'm not gonna spoil anything"
also Agad: "they played the same line in game 5"
These two became such bros, it's wholesome
Happy new year Antonio!
How many times has this happened in the Olympics in the past 100 years? Once, twice? I would like chess to be a bigger sport than high jump
excellent video agad, happy new year!
Thanks for another year of making me love chess❤
Oh what a game. Nepo my favourite player. Congrats man!
Happy New Year to you Agad.
Happy New Year, Antonio!!!
Im guessing Magnus was just deciding to screw FIDE again and make a mockery of the institution
Good. Screw FIDE.
Happynew year to you aswell agadmator
Magnus finding every opportunity to make a mockery of FIDE titles.
As with Barshim and Tamberi, the two had played evenly with each other throughout, and agreed that it was unworthy to declare a championship based upon what would inevitably be nothing but a slight blunder by an otherwise equal player in a tie breaker round.
You're starting off with a bang. Some of us are ending with a bang.
Happy new year to you to Tony! But it's only 6:37 pm on Dec. 31 here in Los Angeles.
I liked this ending, it is much better than the Armageddon that I hope will soon disappear. Moreover it is a blitz title, in the past blitz tournaments were not considered really important.
Happy new year to everyone!
Is it important now.. Looks more of hit and giggle and this sharing is just a sham....
Hate his ending. Chess had a reputation of being boring and mostly draws. Why would anyone want to watch chess live, the players don't even want to be there
Next time on chess mafia: Magnus will phone the arbiter and they will agree that his king can move 2 squares instead of one.
18:55 Magnus is that you?
😂😂😂😂
1:19 funny looking ruy Lopez XD
I think it's okay that they shared the gold medal. But I would prefer if there was a rule that they had to play armageddon instead of playing draw after draw.
Should have shared second place with this beta male energy
Can I just say your titles of late have just been soo clever
Wow u were so quick to review the final 😘😍😗😙😚
I was 2 busy celebrating the New Year in UK 👼
Happy New Year baby 😎😁
Reminds me of the "can we have two golds?" from the High Jump finals in Olympic Games 2020 (2021)
So Magnus can't share his birthday cake but can share world title to Nepo 😂
Context: Magnus was asked whether he would share his birthday cake to Nepo during 2021 world championship. He said no.
2021*
For blitz that was a great combination in the fourth game-- double piece sacrifice.
Happy new year Agad
5:52 , Agad will be like .."hmm..Checks checks check, could be a good channel name"
Magnus has shared victory multiple times
I would like chess to compete with serious sports like tennis and football, not sports like high jump
Etc 😁
Awesome coverage!
Maybe the real championship is the friends we make along the way…..
