Why on earth do some Brits feel so entitled to lecture other English-speaking countries over what words they should or shouldn't use, especially considering the USA is just a minor, barely registering player in the world of football/soccer. Americans have something else called football (so do a couple other countries for that matter), which is by far and away the nation's most popular sport. Let it go.

I just have a comic affinity for delayed reactions; one example being when someone doesn't quite get the punchline of a joke, and you can see the gears working in their head trying to figure it out... then the penny FINALLY drops. It really hits me hard for some reason, sometimes more than the actual joke! :')

    See this is why I love John Oliver. In your traditional American talk show, such an issue will never, ever be brought up. But Last Week Tonight is just amazing. Yes, our health care system sucks, we're billions of dollars in debt, and neither the Democrats nor the Republicans inspire confidence in anybody, but we often forget about problems abroad, and why we should actually care about them. Thanks to this show, in addition to the many problems at home, we've learned about an Indian election, the gay debate in Uganda, a push for Scottish independence, right to be forgotten, a far right in Europe, a Hungarian internet tax, an inept Thai monarchy (and their efforts to curb speech against it), Doug Ford in Toronto, Tony Abbott in Australia, Francois Hollande in France, and yes, the dark side of FIFA. All done in a humorous manner that I find funny, and if you don't find it funny at least you'll know a little bit more about the world by watching this show. Keep it up, LWT.

      Colbert for sure, but if you watch Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, etc., their talk shows definitely lean more towards things that are going on here. Also, The Colbert Report doesn't run anymore.
      What got me about Oliver was that he was bold in covering the Indian election. In just his first season, he ventured a lot into international politics, whereas Colbert took some time to do that. Guess Englishman are more aware of foreign politics than we are.

      notbobby125 Very true. With the World Cup in Brazil many people were upset that the government was spending these ungodly sums to build these facilities for the benefit of huge multinational corporations, despite the enormous problems facing the country such as the high cost of living (food, shelter, transport, healthcare) as well as the corruption already present in government. There were full on protests as these problems were being deliberately ignored by the media to keep the spotlight on the games and hide any negative effects. Even with the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, many Aboriginal groups were forcibly moved so the Olympic Village could be built, all for the benefit of, again, the multinational corporations who sponsor the games.

      With respect, the world cup is drawing the corruption and inequality in Brazil into the spotlight, so not just Brazilians but the world can see it. If this was a ploy by your government to distract everyone, it was a terrible idea.
      And yet, maybe now the problems are so clear, Brazil's next election will be its most meaningful one yet, as people will vote for parties that focus on corruption and actually have a plan to deal with it.

    • @CarlosCavalcantiJ
      @CarlosCavalcantiJ 10 лет назад

      Ryan Masad With all do respect, you are very naive to think that the world cup will bring "all the corruption and inequality" in Brazil to the spotlight. Do you see ANYONE talking about corruption and/or inequality today, the opening day of the WC? It´s clear you still have a lot to learn about how the world works. It wasn´t a terrible idea: it was a brilliant ploy, and it will work, like it´s already working. Thanks in no small part to the cup, they will remain in power for a bare minimum of another 4 years, probably 12.
      And yes, people in Brazil will vote for parties that focus on corruption and actually have a plan to deal with it: those parties want even more corruption, that´s why their focus is on corruption. And their plan to deal with it will be that they do all the corruption, so there´s no enough money for anyone else to rob.

    There are 100 people that could change it immediately. If the top 100 football players in the world banned together and said fuck FIFA we won't play in the world cup unless shit gets changed.....shit would change. Because of the pressure from those players, but also because of the pressure from fans since nobody would want to watch the world cup without the best 100 players involved. All those top 100 players are rich enough that they never have to do anything they don't want to do

      Just a example. 35 million dollars is paid to a winner team. So the paycheck is divided with 23 people and often part of it is given to charity by the team. Christiano Ronaldo's yearly salary is 36 million dollars.

Despite all of the money they give to charities for tax purposes.

    World Cup in Qatar is fucking absurd. Playing football in piece of land that is surrounded by sands, I'd rather play beach football in Brazil. Too corrupted. I love football, I love the game. But I hate modern football!! Too corrupted and most of the companies that sponsors the World Cup questioned FIFA why the World Cup will be held in Qatar except for Emirates Airline. Why would FIFA chooses Qatar, a country that does not have a national football team and does not have any footballing history, to host the World Cup? Because they want money.
