I've wanted to share my thoughts on the Steam Deck for quite a while, and today is a perfect day to look back and see what Valve did to transform the landscape of gaming on Linux.
As for battery life - I suggest to everyone to run lowest settings, lower than native resolution and use FSR to upscale, 40Hz is actually looking way better than 30fps lock - it's mind blowing how much better it feels - it's mere 10fps difference but it feels like 60, then lower TDP and GPU clock until you can maintain 40fps without hiccups. That way I'm getting like 6 hours gameplay on some games and screen below 50% brightness.
@@andreimaginario618 for pc players it might be tragedy but for players that played many years on ps4 and locked 30 it will be amazing experience. sorry for my english xd
@@GronkyKK oh I didn't know this was they bringing ps4 players to "pc" , I thought this was they trying to give PC players a chance to play their games outdoors, maybe it's a bit of both if we thanks about it, but if so, they will need to improve resolution and minimum 60fps
@@jjk5693 it's a visual novel (basically a book with some interaction, fully voiced in Japanese, with music, sound effects, and pictures) about a crazy guy and his stupid friends that accidentally figure out how to send text messages back in time. It's over 10 years old but I've never seen a more perfect time travel story. Highly recommend.
got my steam deck recently. love it so far, and I really hope that it puts pressure on publishers to move towards linux support (already happening) and away from always online drm (fingers crossed). in the long term we could see valve become just as anti-consumer as every other major player in the market, but for the moment their interests still align well enough with end users to make the deck's success a positive influence overall.
use gyro aim for FPS games, idk why you never mentioned it cause its really good and lets you have mouse-like aiming (if you don't believe me, look at how solarlight was able to do really well in a mid-level comp torment in TF2 with no aim assist, him not maining controller, him having to carry his team and the movement system of TF2 being quake-like, making it really lean twords mouse and keyboard, things not common in most AAA Fps, and even then many people in the tournament couldn't believe solar was on controller and a few people even joked about him perhaps cheating).
Gyro aiming is cool and precise, but a huge chunk of FPS doesn't support simultaneous controller and mouse inputs. It's getting worse with retro titles when you have to restart the game to change a layout.
@@ReluctantAnarchist its better to have mouse-joystick (which is far from mouse or mouse gyro but still a huge improvement over stick as long as AA is not forced onto you) or use some guys layout than use aim assist.

Bro you legitimately make the best-quality gaming videos on this platform! Well researched, well filmed, and just in general awesome! Keep up the great work!
Awesome! Thanks for this update. Got my email a few days ago and can't wait! I was a bit disappointed to find out that I can't run a game on the Deck while also gaming on my PC if they're both Steam games without setting one to offline mode. I play some MMOs and the main reason I got this was to play some indie games while waiting on friends, dungeons, etc. Certainly not a deal breaker and there are ways around it.
Anticonsumer drm, social engineering, etc really limiting the games I've been enjoying But, Vampire Survivors, Dead Cells, dungeon munchies, etc been treating me well
I wish more youtubers, making Steam Deck gameplay videos, focused more on battery life. While I rarely take my Steam Deck out of my home, I just as rarely play while plugged into a power source. I try to manage battery consumption to around 15watts. This ensures I get 3+ hours of battery life. For 2015 and older games, I get plenty of battery life and 60fps performance. It's current AAA titles that makes it difficult to even get 2hrs @40hz/40fps performance.
Literally only two minutes into the video, but I just *had* to pause to say this: the editing/post-processing done on this video and the quality of the different cuts are *very* high-quality and extremely *"professional-looking."* Had to subscribe right away. It's not often you see videos about the Steam Deck in this kind of quality. I really do hope you'll cover this device more in the future! Anyways, time to resume the video ;) Just had to stop and say that :) Might be the fastest sub you've ever earned, lol!
I'm Yet to buy mine. But I loved to see this video. Turns out I should create a user to exclusively play on Steam Deck, sharing the games from my main account. I already have a second account, which I use to buy games from alternative stores, so It's not actually going to be a good deal.
While it's impressive, I felt like the linux desktop was quite neutered. For example you can't pick an English GB keyboard for a physical keyboard and there is no option to download it. Also any configuration changes you do to the linux system gets over written after every update. But yeah I do agree, the steam deck is best used for low requirement indie games and emulation.
I think the only problem so far is the battery, if the premise to this is playing anywhere you want, 2 hours is def not enough, it should be atleast 4, but I'm pretty sure it wasnt possible due to the size
9:47 OMG, I have always despised this ever since I got a laptop. It's currently a dealbreaker for several games on my Deck, like Doom 2016 is only installed on my Deck and Eternal is only installed on my PC because both games have this issue. Do you have any examples of this other than the ones shown in the video?
Kinda surprised you use the thumbstick so much in shooters if the aim-assist bothers you. Trackpad+Gyro is way better for FPS with Steam Deck/Steam Controller. Gets me close to the mouse experience.
Yall complaing about how the battery life is and how this device can't hit 60fps all the time. Why don't you guys just play games on your $5000 pc? This device only costs $700 at most and this performance is too good.
I think it's perfect. It's about as powerful as they can afford to make it without it costing thousands of pounds to buy and I think it's got a good of a battery life as I'd expected given the power of the thing and how affordable it is. If you want more battery life, dial down the settings to low and play at 30fps and then reduce the tdp. That way you can get games to look as crap as they do on switch with similar battery life to switch. For me personally I would rather it ran as powerful as possible so games actually look decent, with the option to turn stuff down and make things look fugly if I wanted battery life
I've watched atleast 50 different review videos on the steam deck, even ones from big time production companies. This is by far the best video I've seen yet. Your editing is so good. The percentage of your library supported now? Nice. Also, I don't play games that require always on connections. In fact I just block all connections from them and test if they work, but I also don't use Steam and with all the launchers it may not be a useful technique for others.
