- As indie authors, we are responsible for our books' formatting, and that process can be intimidating if you're just getting started. I've formatted all of my own books in Microsoft Word, and along the way I've taught myself how to do so in a way that looks and feels professional and often includes eye-catching visual elements.
In today's video, I'll show you how I insert some gorgeous visual elements that really add that special touch to your print books, including maps and full spread section dividers. Be sure to check out my earlier videos in this series, and subscribe so you don't miss the rest of of my formatting tips and tricks.

Thank you all so much for checking out this video series and for your likes and comments. I'm so glad it's been helpful for so many of you.
I've had a ton of people asking questions about specific formatting issues or problems, and while I would love to answer all of them, I simply don't have the time (or the knowledge sometimes) to respond to every specific question. Microsoft Word isn't the best or the easiest formatting tool out there, so it is pretty tricky to get things right.
Most of what I've shown here was learned through trial and error and many, many Google searches. You can find many of the solutions to your problems that way. I'm sorry I can't respond to every single question but I wish you all the best of luck in your formatting endeavors!
Great video! I create my images in Photoshop as well and have a little trick that might help others that do the same. Being that you can make your image the exact size of your book page, after inserting, change the wrapping to "in front of text" then change the image size to match the original image from Photoshop. All you have to do now is use the align tab. Align to center then align to middle. Your image(s) will be perfectly aligned every time. Hopefully this is helpful. Thank you for your sharing your workflow with formatting.
Thank you so much for sharing all of your formatting videos in this playlist. Your teaching in extremely helpful!!
Thanks for the content! Amazing. Let me make a question: would work the same way if I inserted as a watermark with no transparency?
Thanks again!❤
I am definitely gonna try this
Great tutorial!
I LOVE the section dividers you have for Tethered Spirits. Sometimes a simple touch like that makes all the difference in how a book feels. My first book didn't have sections, but maybe a future one will and I can play with images like this.
Will you be going into detail on how to format the chapter title page? I think that's what it's called: the first page of a new chapter.
If so I hope you do both with an image and without. I don't have images for my chapter pages, but I love when books do so I'd like to see it so I might use it in future books :)
Thanks again for doing this series. It's gonna be so helpful
Thanks, I love the section dividers too. They were super fun.
The video about chapter headers just went up. I mostly showed how to do the images because it's a little harder, but you can totally use the same process and just delete the image.
So, I want to make sure both halves of my map are seen clearly because of that binding in the middle. Do you think it's wise to keep my own small gap there on both pages?
Yes---that's why I have the gap there. If you want to make sure those middle sections are still visible, you will want to leave a small gap, but I always recommend ordering a physical proof to check if it's lined up the way you want and make any corrections before approving the final version for publication.
Ooh thank you again for another helpful video Tanni ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍
My pleasure 😊
Hi! I have a question for the map stuff: I’m publishing on Amazon kdp and they have specific margin requirements for specific page counts so no words get caught in the spine. My problem is that because of those margin requirements there’s a fairly large bar of space separating the right side of my map from the left side instead of the map going smoothly across the pages while also being in the crease by the spine? Is there a way around that? Like to make the map go across both pages without kdp yelling at me about margins?😂
As long as you are using the "with bleed" option for your book, you should be fine. My maps go right into the margins/spine crease and it is hard to read some of the text, but I've never had KDP give me an error for that.
Hi! I’m so worried because I want to get my book published by a publisher but I don’t understand all the bleed situation stuff because I want some of my pages to be completely black but I don’t know if I can do that.. :( I’m a teenager so I am not experienced at this
If your book is picked up by a traditional publisher, they will do all of the formatting, cover design, etc. for you. This video is for self-published authors who are responsible for the formatting of their own books and are looking to do their own formatting rather than hiring someone to do it for them.
@@ta_hernandez5 thank you so much! I formatted my book already so hopefully that isn’t a problem for the traditional publishers that I’ll be going to.
How did you create your maps?
They were hand drawn by me in Photoshop.
I’m having an issue with my map not bleeding past the bottom margin. It will for the top, but it stops about an inch from the bottom and will not go any further. Any idea on what I’m doing wrong and how to fix it to cover the entire page?
The only thing I can think of is to make sure that the image is set to be "Behind text" rather than square, in line with text, etc. Hope that helps.
@@ta_hernandez5 Thank you! That was exactly it.
