I owned the same model and year. I bought it used and all I did was change the fluids, jump on and ride, and ride, and ride. This was absolutely the best handling bike I ever owned....period. Once I got used to the shaft drive on downshifts, which only took about 5 minutes, it was linked to me telepathically. It never stalled, stuttered, or did anything wrong. I never missed a shift and there was never a "clunk" during shifting. I wore out the rear tire every 5K miles because of the torque. I scraped the pegs in turns. It had a fuel gauge, a center stand, a side stand, a gear indicator, no vibrations at any engine speed.
It only had one negative and that was at stop lights, the engine would cook my legs. It was like a coal stove when stopped but it never overheated and I gave it lots of opportunities on hot summer days. I was much younger and sold it for some reason that I can't remember. I do remember that I sold it for four times the price I paid for it and that was still too low. I would love to have it back.
This is the true UJM (Universal Japanese Motorcycle) - the naked standard or whatever you want to classify it as. The foot pegs were slightly to the rear (perfect), the handlebars were slightly low (perfect), the mirrors were positioned perfectly and I used to take my daughter as a passenger on thousands of miles of mountain twisties. Unbelievable power and handling while riding two-up. It had bigger brothers but I didn't need more power or better handling. This was my Goldilocks Bike.
Did I say this was a great bike?

is it a fine bike for road trips ?

@@santiagoluluaga2975 I took it for all-day rides and never had a sore butt, back shoulders or anything. Putting it on the center stand was a cinch: just push down with your foot while you lifted the chrome bar beside the rear seat. I'm only 5'6" and weigh 170 lbs and never had a problem.

@@santiagoluluaga2975It worked for me. Had a small windscreen so was not the best weather protection. I was in my 40's then, wouldn't recommend the same setup for an older rider.

I bought an ‘82 GS650 in 1992, had 27,000 kms on it. I added 60,000 more over six years before it was stolen. Never failed me, the best middleweight ever! A magazine ad from Suzuki claimed 12.5 seconds in the quarter mile.

My buddy just sent me a picture of this bike in blue he has in his dusty garage. He’s handing it over to me, so I can revive it. Needs a good amount of elbow grease. But after seeing this video, I think I’m up for the task! Love your guys’ work!

My 650 ran smooth as glass. Long rides without a numb butt. Faster than I first thought. Got clocked once at 141. Got head out of my a*s and slowed down to enjoy the sunshine and warm breezes. Sure miss that bike.

This was my first bike. Maybe my best. Easy to maintain. Great handling. Best way to get a girl out of a college party.

I had this exact bike, same colors, but with a big plexiglass windshield, sissybar and luggage rack. Crossed the country 5 times on it ... One of those trips was from Eugene Oregon, down to San Francisco, through the Great Valley to Barstow, across I-40 into Virginia to visit Goshen, up I-81 and other roads to visit Putney Vermont, then North through Montreal, Ottowa, up the Gatineau valley to Bouchette, Quebec, and the Lac de Trente et Un Milles. It was 20 days on this bike, straight.

I had three of those one sold another over used maybe new project and last one in mint condition riding today
Very reliable bike for 80s technology very modern, cheap service drive shaft unbreakable lot of parts on EBay but usually second hand
Due to mass series production but in future became very rare but for today’s performances old is old hated by HD sportsters owners
