Hi Lindsay I appreciate the review. I love my Holbein. I got them from Amazon Japan for only 250 including shipping and duty so that is where I encourage people to get them. I refuse to get them elsewhere at the moment because they are just too expensive. I have learned the hard way not to see professional pencils as "good" or "bad", but rather like tools. There was an artist who did a review this week on them that was not very favorable but she said they perform more like oil pastels rather than colored pencils. I have used oil pastels for years so that might be why I enjoy these pencils so much.
I just received the Astra Pastelowe pastel colored pencils (my current skill level can’t justify the cost of Holbein pencils) I have to admit I’m glad I did not obsess over the Holbein and saved hundreds of dollars! I’ve seen comparison videos of the Astra vs Holbein, and Astra definitely duped the Holbein colors. I also LOVE my Prismacolor over any other colored pencils.
Already did my waaaay too expensive purchase with Luminance. Won't spend another penny on color pencils until they wear out completely. 😅 Thanks for your great videos.❤️
Lindsay, that was indeed a very fair, respectful, thorough, and unbiased review of these colour-pencils. It was a big surprice to me to learn how similar Holbein's pencils are to Arteza's. You are, though, not the first reviewer of Holbein's products to conclude they may not live up to their reputation and thus worthwhile the high costs. Thanks a lot, Lindsay. You saved us a lot of money. Instead, I might get the new Arteza 120 set. I have their previous 76 set, and I am quite fond of those. Many greetings from Denmark.👍🙏❤🌞🙂
Loved your review, I am tempted to purchase a few but my frugality runs deep. So glad you and Jane got together, I have enjoyed both your channels for some time now :)
Thank you so much for reviewing these! I really trust your reviews and appreciate your honesty when comparing them to other pencils. I have the older (not water-soluble) Arteza set too, and it is super helpful to know they feel very similar. I think I'm going to do as you suggested and invest in the pastel set, but unless they blow me away I will probably just use the pastel set and open stock to complement my other sets instead of investing $$$ in the full set of Holbeins.
You got me really curious about these color pencils. I'm going to Japan sometime this year, so I'll purchase some to try. Oh yea, those * marks. Zero marks to be the colors which DOES fade/change, and * * * to be the colors which never fades/changes. Thanks for the reviews. Your reviews are always fun and interesting to watch!
Thank you...and when I say thank you, I mean thank you. No disrespect to all the people on RUclips who say these pencils are the 'holy grail'...I was not buying it. I am in the UK and Jackson's are still selling these open stock and in various sets. I enquired a few months ago if they could obtain the 150 set. They said they could but when they said how much...as deep as I was in my depression and trying to find a comfort from colouring...I thought, at that price, they better be able to get out of the box, put the kettle on and make me a cup of tea... Lindsay I love what you do...so much. I do not want to hijack this. What I do want to say, if this was down to me, this should be the first video anyone discovering colouring as a hobby/stress relief/ any other reason why you reach out and find this...compulsory viewing.
That is very kind if you to say:) I agree, for the price of the set they should do the drawing for you and make tea 😆. They are lovely, don't get me wrong, but for me a bit excessively priced. It's off as their watercolors are among the most reasonable. I think a lot if the cost comes down to them being highly desired and hard to get. I can't see them on the Jackson's site so I think they are restricting sales to the 🇺🇸
I have the 50 pastel colors set and I love them! So glad you took a look at these. I think I will stick to my plan of purchasing a few open stock to fill in any gaps in my pencil collection.
Great review. Thank you! Somewhere I found a blog post where the artist had done a one year lightfast test on Holbein, and the one stars did indeed either fade or discolor. But the 2* and higher were pretty much rock solid.
"Silver threads and golden needles and colored pencils will mend a "I got the blues heart." Lindsay uses those colored pencils like needles and she can thread any color of the rainbow.Awesome❤️🤗🌹
Thanks Lindsay! I bought 4 Holbein pencils recently and also expected them to be softer. I love the pastel colors but not sure I will purchase them. I appreciate your comprehensive review. Thank you. Love your pretty shawl.
I have Holbein as well as Prismacolor and Holbein, to me, did not pass the test of my Prismacolor. I love Prismacolor due to their softness, if you use the correct sharpener, my Prismacolor pencils do not break. However, I do have Holbein watercolors and love the tubes.
Thank you for sharing this comparison of the colored pencils. Derwent lightfast is one of my favorites along with Derwent drawing colored pencils. I can always learn something about the art materials when I visit and watch your videos. You are an excellent teacher, wonderful artist and a fun person to spend time with. Fran
I totally agree. I even use them with the Arteza pencils. But Holbein colors are well worth the cost.🥴 Both pencils, I have to find the right paper to use. Paper, paper, paper!
Thank you for the wonderful review! I've been curious about these for a little while but because of their availability, I've never tried getting some. I did a quick look on ebay, and it does seem there are sellers from japan selling sets of these for more reasonable amounts (one listing was $129+ free economy shipping for a 50 set of just the pastel tones). If I do end up getting these, I'll do what you recommended and go for the pastel set most likely; there doesn't seem to be a need for me to go for the full range when I've already got others. Again, thank you for such a great review!

I'd be tempted just to pour epoxy over them and hang them on a wall!!!😝
The price on the Lightfast went up again. I just purchased about 15 Holbein because the white and light beige/ sand are great blenders and the white is just as opaque if not more than the Prismacolor. Quite a few of the pastel set are not lightfast if that matters to some. Of course too anything neon doesn’t have a chance either. But I love the Jaune brilliant, and many of the earth tones. Pinks are sketchy anyways even if they are Faber Castell. That’s why the Lightfast ones don’t have a huge array of them. But they really blend nice and the waterbrush idea using the Caran ‘de ache medium fibrous pointy marker tipped one works great without leaking if one puts their thinner in there or Zest it, I just use 125 neutral thin because no smell and I can cap it and throw it in my bag. I can sit anywhere and blend away and it doesn’t let you use too much either because of the dispenser button. Thanks again for another great video, Please try the blender idea, it doesn’t make a mess.
@@thefrugalcrafter yes it’s the one in the middle on the Blicks page. It has a nice long pointed marker nib. I just press the side button and wipe it clean, cap it and put it in the bag. The side of the nib can cover a large area too. I have noticed how much I overused it (oms) in the past and it didn’t look so good. I pretreat my hp paper with Liquitex since the pencils don’t soak in anyway and that added vibrancy. And I have even carefully used the Art Spectrum pastel primer in clear to go over a watercolor with using a cheap sponge brush then when dry I detail it. The pigment stayed and now it is exciting to do some plein aire with colored pencils this year. I have some of the Holbein hanging in my window. I only purchased less than 20 due to the lightfast issue. I will let you know in 3 months. But I didn’t buy pink. The white was very useful though and that light beige or sand. I will keep you posted. Take care

Yikes! I bought my 73 set on Amazon for $157 and picked up the rest open stock for $2.05 at blick on sale. Im still waiting on 3 pencils I think. I think brexit it might be to blame on the pencils getting shipped.
@@thefrugalcrafter I finally ordered a starter set of mkmjc watercolor brushes from Jerry's, love them, thanks for that☺️ also, have you heard of Marie's gouache? Got a set of those from Jerry's too, I swatched, they don't seem to awfully bad, I put a spot of one in a plastic palette to see if it cracks like the artezas, my arteza gouache was a disappointment, cracked when dry, and then dried up in the tubes after awhile, I know not high quality but I think I spent close to $50 on them...now in the trash. Thanks for your opinions, I look forward to them❤️👍
I have just bought the whole 150 set second hand. They are like the Arteza but even more like the Brutfuner squares. I think Brutfuner have copied them as they did with their Macaron sets. To me they seem like Brutfuner on steroids. They need a spongier paper to really shine. Be aware that the Holbeins you get in the USA are not the same as the Japanese ones and from what I have seen not as good. The japanese are so pigmented.
As soon as you opened the box, I thought they looked like Polychromos. Prisma's remain my favorite, Arteza's, Poly's and Luminance in the middle somewhere; Irojiten's my least fave. Thanks for this!
I have a handful of Holbeins and a handful of Polychromos pencils. I did get them mixed up in my pencil case because they look so similar. Holbeins are softer though.
From the UK, just to let you know, Jackson's still sell the Holbein sets and open stock. The open stock have recently been on sale for £2.55 per pencil, down form £3.00. I got the 50 pastel set for my birthday; they are lovely pencils. It is as you say, an excellent add on set. My personal favourite brand is Derwent and they have some fabulous pastel tones, but the lay down of those pastel pencils has always been disappointing. Not so the Holbein pastels.
Thanks:) I have a hard time committing to projects so that's why I don't. I tend to work at a different pave and wavelength than others but this one with Jane was so natural!
Great review, loads of info, quite liked the look of these and bonus I can buy in NZ! Yippee. Yep pricey but as most art stuff here is pricey not to bad, can’t get in open stock here though so will give this a miss. Have a great day watch ya next time.
Greetings from Waterville! Have you used Caran D'Arche Luminance? I've been following British artist Natasha Newton and she uses them - not frugal, tho. Cheers!
I want to try them. I might order a few open stock to see but I am really happy with my Derwent lightfast and I snagged them on sale otherwise they are as pricy as Luminance.

Hi Lindsay thank you for the great review and beautiful artwork! I wanted to share with you a set of Pastel pencils I think compare very well to Holbeins I found on EBay a couple months ago called Pastelowe they come in a set of 50 and you can almost match them color for color to the Holbeins. They are a little ok a bit firmer than prismas they feel like my Polychromos or my Schpirerr Farben pencils. They are beautiful & with shipping they were around $33...big difference compared to Holbeins.
I have just ordred these. Will be interesting to see what they are like. They are coming from Poland. Believe it or not the shipping was more than the pencils!
QUESTION? The Cutest poncho Lindsay, love those colors!!!! Did you Crochet it? Sorry second thing I noticed after your smile :-) Oh, I got my little finger blender brushes today, nice packaging and they are sooo soft!!!! Cezanne is my guess before you tell us what brand you think it is similar to. I was wrong, darn. I thought Chromos were pricey! I like my Prisma 35 set (wish it was larger) and Cezanne 72 set colored pencils. Great review, love your honesty.
@@thefrugalcrafter You make me want to try crocheting again! I'll be a grandmother any day now, first grandchild, i'm too young! I bought some soft yarn at the Dollar tree thinking I'd make him a little something.......at this point it going to be a tied fleece blanket, heehee Star Wars theme!
I haven't known that to be the case. I have stubby prismacolors from my childhood that are still soft and creamy and honestly I haven't noticed any others hardening over time.
These reminded me of the shipperer farbens, but lightfast. I was gifted a friends duplicate holbeins along with the 50 pastel set and i liked them so much i ordered the 100 set from Amazon japan for 100 dollars (really good deal). Unfortunately they have about 30 duplicates from the pastel set but i can always use more pastels. Their soft white is so opaque and creamy........Can you please give me the pattern for that pastel shawl you are wearing? I know you dont feature crochet videos anymore but i would really appreciate the pattern.
Hey Lindsay question about colored pencils so I got some luminance color pencils for Mother’s Day and was working on a mixed media piece with them and watercolor and when I applied the watercolor on top I felt like the color had moved along with the watercolor so I scribbled out some color on a scrap piece of paper and used a wet brush and sure enough it’s dissolved actually better then the cheap watercolor pencils I have 😳 but is this normal? Are they suppose to do this?
Isn't it strange that Jackson's no longer sells these pencils but they are now imported to the US? I got my set of 36 from Jackson's just a few months ago. They were cheaper than Blicks.
Violeta Haven Are you sure they weren’t just out of stock? I watch a channel called Colouring Kid and she just received a few Holbeins and said she got them from Jackson’s Art.
Thank you for the review. I always find them quite informative. If you have a link to a video of you using Powder Blender, could you please share it? I would love to see your takes on those products. Thanks, as always. :)
Thank you. That video helped me a lot. I have the arteza pencils too. I like them. So i can save the money and not buy the Hohlbein. I think the are really expensive. The next pencils I'd love to buy would be the derwent lightfast. But they are expensive and well😥. Best wishes from Germany by Judith
The other thing I discovered while I was looking at the internet about these pencils over the weekend, for another reason...is that I logged onto the 'official' Holbein website...and it did not have anything about pencils. I will hold my hands up...I am technologically challenged...if there is something and I have missed it...my bad.
It might be restricted for you to see if you live in America. I don't think they can sell their japan version of pencils here due to an ingredient in some colors. I find it hard to believe that Japan bans a chemical that we allow 😄
I found these nice pens at Walmart yesterday. Called EMOTT by UNI. They had sets of 5, come in a nice base, are water resistant, bleed proof( I tried them out on thin copy paper) and are very smooth writing. Wanted to know if you heard of these, and would you do a review? Thanks!🤗
Last thing I heard the Holbien pastel coloured pencils were not yet available in open stock, if they ever will be; whole set or nothing. Tough luck if you love and use one up I guess. Sadly they are simply to hard and too expensive to get. I'd much rather save up and get the largest set of Derwent Lightfast. Cool they exist but until and unless the price becomes more reasonable they will continue to loose out on potentially millions of sales due to accessibility; ease of purchase, shipping cost as well as speed of shipping, and product cost. Why pay double for a less guaranteed lightfastness and not increased quality? Certainly having to buy the whole set and NO open stock is the nail in the coffin. At this point they just taunt us, its as if they are merely imaginary and might as well not exist to the majority of earth...
@@thefrugalcrafter Ok tha'ts a recent change then other youtubers who were getting these before were saying they were not open stock. Still they are out of reach for me in Canada but I'll consider doing further research and checking if they are 1) lightfast based on independent artists tests and 2) available for any kind of reasonable price in Canada. Thanks.
But it’s called flesh tone because it’s a fine if flesh. It’s not like these companies are saying that fair is the only flesh time in existence. My gosh people can be so thin skinned. I bet you no one will complain if a darker shade was called flesh🙄 Watch someone loose their shit because a company called a bright green apple when apples can also be red or yellow😹 It’s just a name whiny little freaks who raise hell over a name of a pencil

The astra pastelowe are amazing pastel pencils and a lot cheaper then the Hohlbein. They are from Europe
Great review. Thanks.
Love the reptile's eye! ❤
Fantastic and great 👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏💟💟,
From the UK, just to let you know, Jackson's still sell the Holbein sets and open stock.
Thanks Lindsay. 💜
Thank you Lindsay:-)
This is very interesting, and you are saving us $.. Thank you
Hey Lindsey, how you been? Thank you for your video. Rarely see you do collaboration, you should do more
Thanks:) I have a hard time committing to projects so that's why I don't. I tend to work at a different pave and wavelength than others but this one with Jane was so natural!
@@thefrugalcrafter cool cool
I still have some baron prismalcolors!
Great review, loads of info, quite liked the look of these and bonus I can buy in NZ! Yippee. Yep pricey but as most art stuff here is pricey not to bad, can’t get in open stock here though so will give this a miss. Have a great day watch ya next time.
I really want to see the croc eye!!
I have the pastel set and I find them much softer than my prismas.
I just had a look on Jackson's (I love that site too 😁) and they do indeed sell Holbein coloured pencils, both on sets and open stock. 😊
Are you in america? I think we can't see them in the states.
@@thefrugalcrafter I'm in the UK.... Ah! Just figured it out - set 'currency' on the website to British Pounds Sterling and you should be able to find them. 😊
@@MusingsFromTheDen I looked on the uk site and it dashed up for a second and then it was hidden.
@@thefrugalcrafter D'oh! Have you got VPN anti-tracking software on your device? Sometimes if you can't see content, changing the country in the settings is a work-around. 🤔
That's so strange. I couldn't find them on there this morning even on the UK side. Dang it. I'm gonna have to fire my computer back up. LOL
Holbein pencils are cheaper from Amazon.jp and shipping was 3 days
Good to know!
Thanks! I'll keep my eyes open for them.
@@thefrugalcrafter Where can I send them if I wanted to send you a set as happy mail?
I have just ordred these. Will be interesting to see what they are like. They are coming from Poland. Believe it or not the shipping was more than the pencils!
Interesting Lindsay. TFS
Cezanne pencils feel softer to me. Yes I croched the poncho years ago. I really enjoyed making it. It's bamboo yarn and so soft and nice to work with.
Just wondering as a beginner if the softness hardness of a pencil is affected by time. Will a pencil get harder over time?
I'll see if I can find it. I think it was called groovy granny and it was by red heart or lion brand I think.
The 3 stars have good lightfastness. The 1 star has poor lightfastness. Same as polychromos.
Jacksons are still selling openstock.
Ate they oil based? Oil based have more issues with moving with water than wax based. I recommend using pencil last to avoid any issue.
Nice
Isn't it strange that Jackson's no longer sells these pencils but they are now imported to the US? I got my set of 36 from Jackson's just a few months ago. They were cheaper than Blicks.
I think it is really odd. I wonder if it is somehow related to brexit? I know caran dache is having trouble exporting to the UK now.
@@thefrugalcrafter Good idea. That very well could be.
Lindsay, Jackson’s still sells Holbeins, however, they are UK only. I think when they weren’t approved for the US, they had to switch them to UK only.
@@bootsmama1027 use to be that way. But not any more. I looked at them this morning because that's how I use to get my pencils.
Violeta Haven Are you sure they weren’t just out of stock? I watch a channel called Colouring Kid and she just received a few Holbeins and said she got them from Jackson’s Art.
23:09 What paper did you swatch those on?
Watercolor paper I think
Thank you for the review. I always find them quite informative. If you have a link to a video of you using Powder Blender, could you please share it? I would love to see your takes on those products. Thanks, as always. :)

Thank you. That video helped me a lot. I have the arteza pencils too. I like them. So i can save the money and not buy the Hohlbein. I think the are really expensive. The next pencils I'd love to buy would be the derwent lightfast. But they are expensive and well😥. Best wishes from Germany by Judith
4 times a year the Derwent pencils can go on sale for 50% off so check blick often for the sale and you can get them for about $2 east.
@@thefrugalcrafter thank you. I'll take a look. I never bought at Blick. Hopefully the ship to Germany.
The core of the arteza is a lot thicker then the Hohlbein 😳😥
The other thing I discovered while I was looking at the internet about these pencils over the weekend, for another reason...is that I logged onto the 'official' Holbein website...and it did not have anything about pencils. I will hold my hands up...I am technologically challenged...if there is something and I have missed it...my bad.
It might be restricted for you to see if you live in America. I don't think they can sell their japan version of pencils here due to an ingredient in some colors. I find it hard to believe that Japan bans a chemical that we allow 😄
@@thefrugalcrafter I am in the UK...it is odd...
I found these nice pens at Walmart yesterday. Called EMOTT by UNI. They had sets of 5, come in a nice base, are water resistant, bleed proof( I tried them out on thin copy paper) and are very smooth writing. Wanted to know if you heard of these, and would you do a review? Thanks!🤗
I haven't heard of them
Last thing I heard the Holbien pastel coloured pencils were not yet available in open stock, if they ever will be; whole set or nothing.
There is open stock available at blick in the U.S.
There is open stock available at blick in the U.S.
Thanks.

👍🏾💯❤️. Hugz
I wish I had watched this before getting a couple, really feel like an overpriced arteza!
Need your precious suggestions & love about my art work..💖💖💖vuyviy
Those look like Polychromos. I guess many European brands have similar designs. And pencils in general I guess. Lol
But Holbein are Japanese..
