  • Are you curious about these new colored pencils from Derwent? I was and I finally think I know why these pencils exist! Find out how they differ from other pencils in the Derwent line in today's review! These pencils were sent to me for free to review and affiliate links are used in this post.
Derwent Chromaflow Colored Pencil Review (wax based)
    Blick: shrsl.com/2vb8s
    Amazon: amzn.to/3sg6Lje
    Pros:
    Vibrant
    Soft 3.5mm Cores
    Highly mixable for infinite colors
Good coverage with little pressure (good for weak or arthritic hands)
Sharpens well in a small hole sharpener (if you don't have a small hole sharpener use a shallow point sharpener)
    Cons:
    Skinny barrel
No open stock availability as of yet
Not lightfast ratings as of yet but the company says lightfastness is similar to other Derwent pencils
    Only 24 colors
    Bottom line:
I like these a lot as someone who prefers a softer pencil. These are similar to Coloursoft but these mix in fewer layers rather than bend and seems to have a bit less waxy bloom. It is a very small difference but with this limited color, range mixing is important. I hope they come out with more colors and I'd love for them to have a larger barrel like other Derwent pencils. they are a bit more budget-friendly than Coloursoft but not much. Given that and the fact there are no open stock colors I'd recommend Coloursoft shrsl.com/2vb96 over these but I would change my mind if open stock, lightfast ratings and a larger range were available. Still, this is a great versatile set and no a bad addition to any artist's pencils bag.

I don't know if anyone will see this comment, but as a Brit: Prismacolor are quite hard to source in the UK, particularly in open-stock. Often you have to order them online and they come through the post; the last tin I ordered was only packed in a cardboard box and several of the pencils had suffered in transit.
Derwent Lightfast are obviously made to compete with Caran D'ache Luminence and Faber Castell Polychromos (and in my opinion they do compete). Chromaflow are priced not only less than Coloursoft and Procolour in the Derwent range but even slightly cheaper than the bog-standard Derwent Artists range (at least they are here). The first tin I bought I did have breakage problems, but I had no problems with the second tin (and in my experience Prismacolor has a lot of variation, not only in delivery but in cores being centred in the barrels).
My first serious coloured pencils were Derwent Artists and Studio collections and then Karisma Colour (which was the British name for Prismacolor). I've also used several Faber-Castell and Caran D'ache ranges.
Chromaflow are not guaranteed archival for professional artists, but when a friend asked what they were like, I said, "Do you remember Karisma Colour (ie Prismacolor)?"
Why do they exist? Lightfast is an OIL-based range. Artists, Studio, Procolour and Softcolour are all somewhat harder; IMO this is the closest Derwent does to Prismacolor AND has good laydown on textured or coloured papers.
I love Procolour and I love Softcolour but I think Lightfast and Chromaflow have been designed for different purposes.

I really like the two-layer tin! I'm always happy with Derwent......but I confess they score points because I like the artwork on their tins, LOL I bought a tin of their Graphic pencils, because I loved the Union Jack tin......but I can't draw, so that led to me signing up for Lindsay's Drawing class......and now I have pastels in the mail to me.....and around and around it goes.

First of all, love the apples, they look amazing. Would love to see them being drawn. I enjoy very much your art.
I'm also one of the weirdos that likes to mix colours from a few I have. I don't like choosing the right colour when I have 30 reds in front of me, give me a few that are clearly distinct and I'm happy and I want to blend to achieve smooth transition instead of searching for all the middletones. It also lets me have more options not as much because of budget (although that plays a role too), but more due to space the big sets would take, the small 12/24 colours sets in any material are so compact.
I really love how these blended seamlessly together without any harsh effort. Will be interesting to see more of them. Thank you so much for the detailed review.

Thank you. I have been hearing about Derwent for several years now and so when I had a chance to try the Chromaflow 12 pack, I went for. I thought I would be able to find some info on line that set these apart for all the other Derwent kinds of pencils and the other brands. I was unable to find any until now. I think I will try to swatch them and try them out again thinking about you said while doing it. This is assuming that I can find three missing pencils. I dropped this tin and my Pagos Watercolor tin at the same time and found I had stuck a Pagos in with the Derwent so missing three colors and I can't find the tin of Pagos watercolors at all! I have got to clean and sort my sewing/craft room! Thank you for all the teaching you do. I know I appreciate it and am learning a lot.

Yes, I'm curious! I've been watching all the reviews I can find on these pencils and so far the opinions expressed have been mostly positive. I was a little bemused at first that a British company was marketing these abroad first with not even a whisper on the British site about them. I love Derwent pencils, and if I had none I would certainly consider them, but since a set of Lightfast pencils was my birthday present last year, there is no reason why I would need these on top. That said, they do look like a lovely set for someone just starting out on coloured pencil work!

I had issues with 2 pencils the tips broke off a couple times while sharpening then stopped. I love these pencils so much I bought 2 sets. I’m thinking this is a test run to find out if there will a demand for them. Only thing keeping them from being perfect for me is the width. I like Derwent’s other pencils that are thick. Doesn’t cramp my hands if I’m coloring for a long time.

Thank you for the review. Perhaps Derwent is trying to see how popular these will become before introducing more colours or open stock. Probably something like with Procolour which didn't the fame as hoped and so they went nowhere further.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

Personally, I find that if I can give them to a friend/family member who is at all interested, I can emotionally separate myself from them knowing that someone else will give them more love than I currently am (since I'm not using them). It will brighten their day a whole lot🌞
If you're really concerned about how much you paid for them (and you still remember the price), then maybe you haven't had them long enough to give them a fair shot.
If you try them again after a break and still don't like them, then you owe it to yourself to release that guilt and hand them off so you can move on, and you'll also save the next person from spending the money and it will have a second life :) it's a win-win

Sometimes a supply you don't love proves to be usefull the more advanced in a subject you get. If the pencils you don't like are hard it might be that you are trying to use them for filling in or blending when they are better for details. You might be nervous to get rid of them if you haven't given them a fair shot.

The price thing is really crazy with Derwent. Even the Lightfast ones go on sale through Blick’s for $2 something and that is when I stock up. I love softer pencils too and sent out to try about 15 of the Holbein pastel ones. Otherwise I am a colored pencil junkie. I love the Lightfast, Polychromos, some Procolours, Luminance and a few Prismas. I heard the Holbein ones are soft yet not prone to breaking like Prismas and the layers really come through those pastel ones. Well when you use them they are well worth it. I hand sharpen now because the crank sharpener eats the pencils.

I did too wirh a standard hole sharpener but when I used my adjustable electric one with a smaller hole it was fine. I the the pencil wobbles and the lead snaps at the edge of the casing.

Thanks for the great review. I ended up getting the Chromaflow 24 set, and I was pleasantly surprised how much I really liked them. They are creamy, bright and have a good color range. I am with you, about wishing they came in larger sets. I went to the Derwent website for more information on the pencils and it said that they are not planning on coming out with larger sets, however, they said that they are not going to totally rule it out if their customers really want more in the future. They are not planning on open stock, either. My one issue is the barrel size. It is a little on the small side, but definitely not a deal breaker.
I absolutely love your bag of apples picture! The bag looks so realistic!

I know you're not into pastel pencils (I am), but the old Derwent set had no clear red either. It was quite frustrating! I've yet to treat myself to the current collection. :)

Good video I just got the chromaflow 24 etc.
I think the price difference between the chromaflow and the other you showed is because it is an introduction price and if they catch on the price goes up. Hopefully the quality won't go down but I do like them.
Simple color names and in order 1-24. To me that's a plus.
I also like that you talk fast enough and get to the point.
That feather! Those apples! What the heck! Perfection!
That's 4 exclamation ooints and I don't like using them ....much. So that's really saying something especially when I am pecking away with one finger.
Thanks for a great video and NO. I am not going to spoil that apple picture by trying to replicate or come close to what you have done. I needed the color combo for the red apole though. I tried one in my coloring book and it looks like a peach that changed its mind and wanted to be a lemon. So what a big help.

Color is why you need more than one set of pencils. I have been known to use two or three different sets on a adult coloring picture.

I love whenever you are doing realism art work whether it is pencil or watercolor. When you first showed the bag of apples I wanted you to take the bag off because they're so realistic. Love your videos especially the long pencil or watercolor I've been in hospital then bed since November, don't get covid-19 I slept for 4 months I'm now allowed to sit at the dinner table so I can get my art stuff out love you and your family stay safe . You are wise Lindsay to make your own color charts, trying out all the Derwent color pencils. Formerly, Derwent color pencils weren't "lightfast" & that was a problem as finished, matted, framed artwork of Derwent color pencils would fade if displayed in brightly lighted room, room with windows & sunlight. Thankfully these lightfast color pencils artwork will last & last.

So glad I went back in your vids and looked for this review after I ordered these items. I *try hard* to be "minimalist" even if it hurts the budget, though it usually helps the budget) - I've only ever had Prismas really, and a 24 set of Crayolas with a second 12 set on hand. I can't buy the "sets" usually (Prisma: +10 grays? Hello). What I liked about the Chromaflows were the points you could get on that black paper! I've tried: Prismas since college and I can't do that with the white! So I can use my Prismas to fill in the "reds gap" (ITA the reds for me are pretty huge, including that black grape I have a box of because that's a killer Prisma!) with these Coloursofts! I didn't waste! Yay! (I try hard not to impulse buy. I gotta get that white peacock though!) You are a very fair reviewer and a lovely artist.

Hi Lindsey! great review! Thank you so much for this!🥰 Well... I don't know why these colored pencils are so expensive! if they are not lightfast... I searched on Amazon and the set of 72 is $101.29 and the set of 48 is $63.59...still don't know why? The Derwent Lightfast right now June 25, 2022 are $159.69 for the set of 72, and they are great pencils! if they are not in the professional range... why they are so expensive? I find them very interesting, and they have nice colors... but I think that because they have these characteristics, they must be expensive!, there are many colored pencils that are very good, and they are not lightfast, and they are not expensive. I'm a fan of Derwent products, but I think they went too far with this.

I purchased a tin of 12 to test and sharpening them one colour Basil 16, just ripped up the pencil, the wood. I had to sharpen quite a bit until I could get some lead to use.
I don’t know what it was all about…..then I purchased the 72 set and still have breakage with the wood.
I still like all Derwent pencils though.

Hi Lindsay! I really love your Apples in the bag piece it is beautiful, I noticed it behind you in one of your latest videos.. I am really loving Derwent pencils, I have a set of 12 of the Artists and am waiting on a set of 36 colored pencils, one of the same sets you have shown and said you absolutely love for landscape drawings. I can not wait to try them out! I ordered a couloursoft pencil to try out as well. I noticed you have a tin of black and white Derwent pencils. I found a small set but not the bigger tin like you have. Are yours artisits colors or a different family of pencil all together? Thanks for your informative videos and I would love to see the apple process video :) Tina

I think the price will comedown after the newness wears off. I also thin Coloursoft is a better pencil but chromaflow is softer and closer to prismacolor which is hard to get outside of the U.S.

If anyone is in the market for an electric pencil sharpener I found the top feed versions much better for my colored pencils. It's easy to get them a little off center or inadvertently apply pressure to the side feeds. The top feeds you can basically just let gravity do the job and I had a lot nicer tips and less breakage.
