My wife and I visited Highclere in 2019, and it was unexpectedly one of my favorite stops along our trip. I highly recommend to anyone going, see the Egyptian exhibit in the basement. It’s a separate ticket, but well worth it.
I would love to go on the self guided tour! On the TV show, they didn't have to change much when filming in some of the rooms! Glad the beautiful place is still around to enjoy!
Downton Abbey saved this place as it was literally falling apart when it was originally selected. Only the ground floor was habitable, the roof was leaking like a sieve, and the Earl and his family had literally be forced to move out to another smaller house on the estate.
Bravo; you stayed focused on the house. Good video. There has been a very noticeable uptick in tourism at Highclere since it was used as the set for Downton Abbey. This was one of the great houses that benefited from a large inflow of money from a wealthy wife, but unlike Cora Levinson, the bride was English: Almina, the illegitimate daughter (and only child) of Alfred Rothschild. If you saw the episode where Mary and Sir Richard Carlisle, the man she planned to marry for his money, were touring a house to buy, that scene was filmed at Alfred's own Halton House.
Thanks for the information, I did a little looking, Almina was given 500,000 pounds by Rothschild, which is the modern-day equivalent of about 85 million dollars.
I’m SO happy you showcased this “house”!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Downton Abbey and have watched it many many times over!!!🥰 It’s one of my very favorite TV shows and wish it was still going on!!! Thank you for sharing this because I learned more about my favorite shows house history!!!
@@JW-bw8nj The castle covers 30,000 square feet and has a total of 300 rooms, with approximately 61 of these being bedrooms on the upper floors. Approximately 50 of those rooms were uninhabitable as of 2009.

Ken's voice is so relaxing 😌
Thanks!
I really enjoyed the pictures of the castle in the 19th century! I'd love to see more.
Now I know how Highclere Castle came about! Very different from what I had imagined! Very beautiful house and gardens.
Very interesting, thank you! I really enjoy your videos. I do wish occasionally that more pictures of the furnishings etc were used.

@@bigredc222 According to her biography, it also seems that whenever she needed money for anything, all she had to do was ask.

One of my favorite things about watching the show is the house. I knew it was a real place but didn't know if they filmed there or was just sets
Cool.
Make it a deer park again.
:)
I was there in 2015. It's very worn, very worn, probably from the film crews and tourists. Still cool.
As much as I love the history and the majesty of these mansions/estates, I do miss seeing your tour videos. Will you be making anymore of them?
We have a really special tour coming out on July 1st. Stay tuned!
@@ThisHouse I will! Thanks!
It was also used as “Misselthwaite Manor” in the 1987 Hallmark Hall of Fame production of The Secret Garden
Thanks for another interesting video. I very much appreciate the blueprint (with metric scale!)… its a great touch. Cheers!
Glad you liked it!
Very, very beautiful! Enchanting video ! Congratulations!
Glad you enjoyed it, cheers!
Well done Ken. Thank you
Thank you for your informative information (a Canadian) giggle
This story is fascinating!!! I always enjoy your videos!!! 👍👍
Great video very well spoken
great video, thanks for covering this magnificent castle. Could you maybe cover Lynnewood Hall in the future??
Very Beautiful
Wow! 300 rooms… those poor maids…
Love it 😀
For my taste: The structure was far more appealing in its original exterior style.
I'm the opposite. It was entirely too plain before. It's much more stunning in it's current state.
It looks very much like the Parliment Structure!
I actually thought the Bedroom looked like a Modern setting!
Jacobean is prononunced "Jakkobeeyan"
I saw on documentary on this that said the castle was used for wounded soldiers and this one says children .which is it"
Were some of the Eyes Wide Shut interiors shot here? Look to be!
No. Big mansion for the masked ball was Mentmore in the UK for the exterior. Main hall was Elveden Hall in the UK for the interior.
80 bedrooms? I think that’s an error. I’ll post a link to detailed plans of all floors.
If it has between 250-300 total rooms, I can see 80 of them being bedrooms. How many bedrooms do you think it actually has?

"Saloon"?
Salon
How did people with horse drawn buggy’s make such Grand buildings?
This is a bog standard house in England, did they use it for a television series that was quite popular?
Yes
Yes, it was used as the filming site for Downton Abbey
As if he didn't know that.
It was also in the TV Version of The Secret Garden with Jennie James in the 80s
how is that a castle? No crenulation, no moat and no keep...nope its not a castle.
