That was true about Sergeant York too. His real actions were so incredible and out there that filming them would have looked absurd. They did the opposite with Audie Murphy. The film is accurate but a lot of people accuse it of being overblown and impossible.

Audie wanted it to be authentic and true to what he experienced and considering that man had PTSD and allowed himself to be put in a situation similar to the one he experienced, even if it was a Hollywood set speaks volumes to his character and mental fortitude.
He did after the war. Desmond doss suffered greatly and I mean greatly after the war. He had very severe ptsd. He lost Dorothy to a car accident which he was driving. She was dieing of cancer. Yes my friend he died 100 times. I know cause I've died 100 times for all the same reasons. So much of me is dead, my body just doesn't know to stop functioning. Yes, all soldiers who have seen what we have seen and do the things we did, everyone of these men die alittle more with each nightmare.

The Japanese sniper was one bit that was changed to be more believable than the true story. The sniper survived the war and testified that he had Doss in his sights 3 different times but his gun jammed all 3 times. This was too unbelievable even for a movie about a true story so it was changed to the sniper scene we have here at 1:30.

When in (5:05) he starts to walk, the look on his face shows his suspicion then suddenly he realizes their respect. The last soldier, his smile shows his respect. That is my take
Something else I think was good in this scene is when the Major/Captain reaches out and holds his head a bit, Doss presses his head into the hand - seeking comfort. Thought that was a nice choice by the actor to do that, even if subtly. It seemed so natural.
Nobody in the comments seems to be talking about this, but at 2:32, is the first moment in the film that Doss actually holds a gun. But for me, at that moment, Desmond was not holding a gun, because he didn’t use it as one. He gave that metal tube with wooden parts a new purpose, a new meaning as a way of saving a life, not take one… and he did. He proved that in this broken world, one could still use something designed purely to destroy, to do the exact opposite. He used an object of killing to save, and I think thats fucking beautiful

He and Sgt Benevidez’s stories are two that always amaze me. There are countless more that would and do from US soldiers, I know, countless stories of bravery, sacrifice, honor, and perseverance. Would that I could show but a small fraction of the character of such men and women.
What Desmond Doss is the true definition of bravery. Imagine spending a night behind enemy lines with no way to protect yourself surrounded by enemies with no way to defend yourself and still be able to pull 75 wounded men off the ridge that otherwise would die.
my father was there. described the sheer hill with rope ladder. said during the fighting the smoke was thick and that enemy soldiers would pop up from caves among the US troops and blow themselves up. this movie depicts what he described.

Amazing true story. He stayed behind , when the entire battalion left. When he tried to save Smitty , played by actor : Luke Bracey. He found out that Smitty had died. He then prays to God. He tells God," God I can't hear you ". Then a fallen soldier is yelling and begging for help. Artillery shells are still falling down . As there are still American soldiers laying down wounded but still alive. Japanese soldiers are on foot patrols looking for American soldiers wounded . So they could bayonet them and kill them. Yet, amazingly Desmond Doss takes cover and safely waits for opportunity to rescue the ones he could save. How many Americans do we have now days would do this ? He saved over 75 American wounded soldiers . Its believed he actually saved 100 . Amazing story of courage and love for man kind and a true love for God. Action speaks louder then words. Also he saved his captain that was trying to kick him out of the Army. When he pushed a hand grenade away from the captain and kicked the other hand grenade with his foot. He even rescued his Sargent that was hazing him back in boot camp. To pull a blanket with all the weight of a sargent that weighed more then his self. God gave him the courage and the strength . Amazing movie and true story. They should teach this in all high schools. Loyalty , love , courage. Plus : Love for God's Holy Bible. Amen.

In real life he had to low crawl rescue a lot of those soldiers, if you haven't done a proper low crawl, you have no idea how tiring that is, let alone with a wounded soldier on your back and he did miles worth of that. He collapsed of pure exhaustion after he got the last soldier.

This film has given great homage to the Christian faith and how the Ten Commandments play a role in each of our lives. History teaches how nations have fallen when the Presence of GOD is driven away by crime, that the Bible defines as sin, and the enemy of peace takes His place. Just look where we are now with the lawlessness everywhere. And these are times of peace.
I was proud to go thru fort Jackson, tank hill, in May of 1985. The same barracks that these guys trained in. I trained in. Wish I'd of known it back then. There was still ww2 training posters up. For map and terrain training, they actually had posters of naked women. I wish I could have kept a few of those posters.

I appreciate that this is not 100% accurate. Nothing can be in these kinds of situations. But if only 1% was true, this man was a hero. This reminds me of Piper millen, who, at the order of his CO, played the pipes on Sword Beach during D day. He told his CO, Lord lovat, that playing the pipes was against regulations, and Lovat replied. Ah, but that's the English War Office. You and I are both Scottish, and that doesn't apply" They advanced to pegasus bridge under the Piper. Snipers could have taken him out but, according to sources, didn't. He had no weapon, just a musical instrument, and survived that. Insane
The fact that Doss did what he did is beyond comprehension. Yet, no man should ever have needed to experience that horror. War is the epitome of human indecency.

Different backgrounds, different faiths, different ethnicities, different cultures, different beliefs, it all comes together in a honorable manner known as Brotherhood.
I grew up on his story… my parents raised us in the 7th Day Adventist faith, and in Summer Vacation Bible School we learned about his journey to serve, yet not to kill, serving as a medic.. A story that touches your heart. However I chose a different path, not fully accepting the Church’s pacifism. Not being as good a man as Doss. I was lucky though, I never had to kill, though being an Air Force Security Police Security Specialist, it was a very near thing twice. So that’s a “maybe” that still haunts me some nights..
Because both sides wanted the nets in place. For the Americans it was to scale the cliffs. For the Japanese it was because they wanted to know where the Americans were going to come from ie. Plan the killing zone. The cargo nets were in fact in the best interest of both parties. Odd as it sounds.

Doss is one of a few blessed soldiers who in all reality should have died a 100 times. BLESS YOU MY MAN.

Vince Vaughn really surprised me with his role in this film, he was really good.
He has been mainly doing serious roles for the last few years and he is pretty believable in them.

I've watched this clip a dozen times, and every time Doss goes over the edge with his dead friend takes my breath away.
I wonder how many men attempted things like this, but were just shot dead after the first step, so we never knew about it.

He and Sgt Benevidez’s stories are two that always amaze me. There are countless more that would and do from US soldiers, I know, countless stories of bravery, sacrifice, honor, and perseverance. Would that I could show but a small fraction of the character of such men and women.

What Desmond Doss is the true definition of bravery. Imagine spending a night behind enemy lines with no way to protect yourself surrounded by enemies with no way to defend yourself and still be able to pull 75 wounded men off the ridge that otherwise would die.
my father was there. described the sheer hill with rope ladder. said during the fighting the smoke was thick and that enemy soldiers would pop up from caves among the US troops and blow themselves up. this movie depicts what he described.

Amazing true story. He stayed behind , when the entire battalion left. When he tried to save Smitty , played by actor : Luke Bracey. He found out that Smitty had died. He then prays to God. He tells God," God I can't hear you ". Then a fallen soldier is yelling and begging for help. Artillery shells are still falling down . As there are still American soldiers laying down wounded but still alive. Japanese soldiers are on foot patrols looking for American soldiers wounded . So they could bayonet them and kill them. Yet, amazingly Desmond Doss takes cover and safely waits for opportunity to rescue the ones he could save. How many Americans do we have now days would do this ? He saved over 75 American wounded soldiers . Its believed he actually saved 100 . Amazing story of courage and love for man kind and a true love for God. Action speaks louder then words. Also he saved his captain that was trying to kick him out of the Army. When he pushed a hand grenade away from the captain and kicked the other hand grenade with his foot. He even rescued his Sargent that was hazing him back in boot camp. To pull a blanket with all the weight of a sargent that weighed more then his self. God gave him the courage and the strength . Amazing movie and true story. They should teach this in all high schools. Loyalty , love , courage. Plus : Love for God's Holy Bible. Amen.

Hacksaw Ridge has got to be my favorite WW2 movie. What an incredible story, based on fact. I wish that Desmond Doss could have seen the movie made honoring him before he passed.
He was just the vessel! Not to take anything away for this man but the lord gave him strength and protection. We should all be so blessed as to have that type of power flow thru us. In his name and all his glory god bless Desmond Doss
Even as a vessel, he was only human, so his will and determination, would of still helped him alongside God.
God does things Gods way .
They ridiculed him for his beliefs, and yet he saved over 70 men in his company, thus earning their respect.
In real life he had to low crawl rescue a lot of those soldiers, if you haven't done a proper low crawl, you have no idea how tiring that is, let alone with a wounded soldier on your back and he did miles worth of that. He collapsed of pure exhaustion after he got the last soldier.

This film has given great homage to the Christian faith and how the Ten Commandments play a role in each of our lives. History teaches how nations have fallen when the Presence of GOD is driven away by crime, that the Bible defines as sin, and the enemy of peace takes His place. Just look where we are now with the lawlessness everywhere. And these are times of peace.
So god aided Doss but let countless others die horrendous deaths. Explain that?

I was proud to go thru fort Jackson, tank hill, in May of 1985. The same barracks that these guys trained in. I trained in. Wish I'd of known it back then. There was still ww2 training posters up. For map and terrain training, they actually had posters of naked women. I wish I could have kept a few of those posters.

I grew up on his story… my parents raised us in the 7th Day Adventist faith, and in Summer Vacation Bible School we learned about his journey to serve, yet not to kill, serving as a medic..
A story that touches your heart.
However I chose a different path, not fully accepting the Church’s pacifism. Not being as good a man as Doss. I was lucky though, I never had to kill, though being an Air Force Security Police Security Specialist, it was a very near thing twice. So that’s a “maybe” that still haunts me some nights..
Just an observation. Why didn’t the Japanese cut down the climbing nets? Would have prevented the marines from scaling the cliff
The climbing nets were anchored to the rim of the cliff. If you tried to cut them you would be exposed over the edge of the cliff.

Because both sides wanted the nets in place. For the Americans it was to scale the cliffs. For the Japanese it was because they wanted to know where the Americans were going to come from ie. Plan the killing zone. The cargo nets were in fact in the best interest of both parties. Odd as it sounds.
