"Chuck" or Theirem is the boy who chased Powder in Ep1, that is why he is so terrified of her. She stuck the "Dud" bomb on his back that exploded in pink powder to remind him that she hasn't forgot about him and to let him know, very explicitly, that her bombs now only fail when she wants them to.

@@Shythalia When the Artists of the show took the youthful face of someone from EP1 and aged it up to the mid-twenties age in EP5, and the writers took the time to make sure that Jinx had verbal interaction with him in which she repeats an interaction that she had with him in the past as the writers do with such frequency and consistency it could be measured by a metronome, yeah that is pretty much confirmation. And post EP3 Jinx only ever interacts verbally with 5 other people Silco, Vi, Caitlyn, Ekko, and Sevika. Each one of them directly contribute to who she becomes. "Chuck" was the prelude to her childhood failure. For her to revisit that person as the first person post-baptism is also brilliant story writing. But I suppose you can clench your eyes closed really really hard and say "NUH-UH!" really loud and believe it isn't true because someone else didn't tell you.
Lots of people question why Caitlyn gave up her gun. Originally I thought it was because she thought the doctor might refuse to give her the medicine if she gave something that wasn’t worth enough, but it just occurred to me that she might have given it up because she didn’t feel worthy of it. Like with Grayson, she sees how the people in the undercity are suffering, and she feels like she failed them; thus, she doesn’t feel like she deserves that rifle.
Caitlyn's gun is a symbol of her idealogy. Grayson asks her 'what are you fighting for?' and in this scene Caitlyn trades in her gun, which represents aggression and conflict, for a potion that represents healing and protection. Her duty as an enforcer is no longer about controlling(enforcing) people but healing the divide between Piltover and the undercity.
I think it harks back to foreshadowing in her flashback scene with Grayson in ep5.
"For me, knowing how to handle this weapon means being able to protect people. ... What are you shooting for?"
Caitlyn, like Grayson, sees it as something to protect with, so she uses it to get medicine.
If the theory that Huck is Twitch is right, I could also see that gun being inspiration for his crossbow with it's foldable capabilities. It's a stretch, but could be a neat way to tie Huck's transformation in with the events of this story.

That's possible. Or at least, it's an echo of Grayson's attitude to her weapon. The show is subtle enough to do that.
There are simpler explanations, of course. She may not have anything else of value on her, or at least not anything easy to fence.
Also, she had already lost her job as enforcer before she released Vi, so running around with the gun has innate risk. She can't get back to Piltover with Vi barely standing, so the benefit of keeping it is marginal.

Ella Purnell's delivery on that line (and also that NOOOO!!! at the end) is just downright heartbreaking. Even more so considering the implication that Jinx legitimately isn't sure what's real anymore.

@@green31OSU She's doing an amazing job in Fallout too. I really start to love her as an actress and it is great to see people taking video game adaptations seriously. She'd probably make for a kickass Elizabeth from Bioshock too if they ever adapt that one.
A lot of portrayals of mental illness in film always have that feeling or undertone of making it sound like being mentally ill is fun. Like it's liberating or it makes you smarter. Jinx here is a brutal reminder that mental illness is not fun for anyone. Especially not for the person suffering from it! The idea of not being able to tell what's real and what's not doesn't sound fun to me.
One of the great details I love from that scene is how she doesn't just completely lose it right away, she literally asks for space to think. She is trying to process, trying to handle the situation, trying to keep it together because things can be very overwhelming/overstimulating when dealing with certain mental health issues. And if she'd gotten that space, things may have turned out different. But then the firelights show up
Honestly, seeing Powder struggling and hurting like that hit me more than her crying in episode 3. It was super hard to watch.
Jayce's criticism of Heimerdinger isn't wrong. His life is so long that he often misses how individual people are currently suffering as he focuses on the future of society as a whole, assuming that in the slow, steady course of progress eventually all those problems will be worked out, even if it's not in the lifespan of the current generation of humans
But at the same time, Jayce isn't actually forcing this vote for that reason. He's only using it as an excuse to get rid of Heimerdinger as an obstacle to his personal goal of saving Viktor, not thinking about the long-term consequences of that decision at all
I see what you mean, but I think Heimerdinger is sort of the opposite - he's NOT been looking out for the future of society as a whole.. the undercity is in a bad state and has been for some time. However, I think he is a feeling being, and is clearly upset by Viktor's health prognosis. I think his longevity coupled with living with humans has meant he's had many friends die, which would wear on someone with empathy - and perhaps he's been blocking himself off as a defence mechanism. If he lived with other Yordles, it wouldn't be a factor - but he chooses to live with humans (and other races) despite the pain it causes him. Another duality in a show filled with them.
Also, while Jayce certainly has good intentions and *wants* to improve the lives of those in the undercity, he's ultimately so disconnected from the reality of what's happening there that he never manages to do so.
He dreams of inventing things that will help the poor, but he ultimately just ends up helping the rich get richer.
@@Hohum37 See, my read was that Heimerdinger underestimates how bad the situation actually is in the undercity, as he leaves most of the practical matters of running the city to the rest of the council and focuses his attention on the academy and advancing arts and sciences
He sees it as a small scale problem that, as long as everybody on the council has good intentions, will blow over in a few decades! Which of course will fly by in the blink of an eye and people will barely remember it ever happened before too long
@@roryschussler Both Jayce and Heimerdinger are massively privileged and have no idea of the realities, they just end up f*ing up in different ways.
@@aranthurthat's my take too. His priority is defensive, to resist anything that might lead to calamity. Echo has the correct response to that.
As for Jayce, I think he does genuinely want to help Victor AND the cities. But he's very green, and wildly underestimate how deep the problems run, how difficult it is to see the right choices in a complex structure, and how easily even good decisions can be warped by other people's weaknesses and bad choices.
A lot of people write off Marcus as a scumbag but he's a complicated character, he has redeeming qualities, he's trying to be with Silco what Grayson was with Vander to keep the peace, he tried to save VI's life (albeit by putting her in prison but still) and now he's doing whatever he needs to to protect his daughter.
He's by no means a hero, but he's definitely someone who compromised one too many times and now is stuck in a spiral of corruption.
Also he began in a very classist environment. He was raised in a kind of caste system which labelled the undercity as scum. So his journey began tainted and before he could correct himself he made a fatal error and got stuck in a dark place. Now with a child he can't take the kinds of risks he might have if he was alone in this quickly deteriorating situation.
Marcus is often called a "weak" character, but I think it's misrepresenting him. He's not weak as a character, he's weak as a person. And I think it's interesting, with so many very strong characters, to have one that is genuinely powerless because of his past mistakes and can't find the courage to fix them.
Viktor is healthier in that scene, he's not hunched over, not as ragged, speaking a bit better, that's what he's referring to. Viktor used it another time and it improved his over all health a small amount. Didn't cure him, just made him less bad off.
Also two people can have opposing opinions but still be technically right. Heimerdinger's caution is correct after all he's seen, but Jayce is correct on the things he's not been paying attention to and the suffering of the people of the undercity. Both are correct.
I JUST realized, in the beginning, Viktor couldn't keep up with his own creation...
Yeah the writing is so good in this show. They establish in every scene how reckless Victor is with his work.

So Vi is not really telling the truth here at the end, not that it's deliberate: she tells Jinx that she is only there for her, but that is already not the case: she is already thinking and considering caitlyn as well. If Caitlyn didn't matter to her in any capacity then she would have dumped her right there and when Jinx questioned who she was, rather than trying to placate both sides. She's already being torn.
I think Vi is being naive and not understanding Caitlyn was after Jinx with the gemstone. I really believe she meant leaving with Powder but got caught in the moment and the firefights didn't give them the chance to work it out
Shimmer kinda reminds me of Morphine. Used properly under doctor supervision, it is a powerful pain reliever. Used improperly you have Heroin, a highly addictive narcotic that destroys lives. You a number of times in the series where Shimmer, when used properly it is an effective treatment for all sorts of ailments or treatment. Unfortunately, it is very rarely used for this purpose.
Jinx is one of the greatest characters ever written she has such a tragic backstory and the breaking of her mind in this show shows her decent into madness so well.
funfact about the scene with Jinx and "Chuck". notice how it is the same scene as in episode 2 ending, when Powder sat in the bar and Vander poured her a drink. same demeanor, same body position, same cup and she even trained "Chuck" to place the drinking straw into the glass as Vander always did :) some people are sure that "Chuck" is the boy that chased Powder in episode 1, which explains why she "purple smoke bombed" him and his facial features actually fit. *spamming random theories*
I never noticed how much those two scenes mirror each other, that's interesting, but I don't think Chuck is the guy that chased Powder. I'm pretty sure that's one of the guys gambling with Sevika last episode, along with the guy who got his nose bashed in by Mylo in episode 1 and now has a metal nose. A lot of the background characters, especially Silco's crew, recur throughout the show. It's cool.
@@Fangtorn The one with the metal nose has that because Vi Planked him in the face at the end of that fight, it wasn't Mylo's weak ass forearm bash, it was Vi's golf swing that destroyed his nose.
Ella purnell and Hailey Steinfeld absolutely deserve all the awards for their VA.
21:47 I feel.... rather than the council as a whole wanting to get rid of Heimerdinger, or seeing him as holding them back, I think the reason they all voted him out is because Jayce (and Mel) had maneuvered themselves so that all the others were loyal to him / them. You can see it in Caitlyn's mother's reaction, and even the others hesitating and thinking twice before voting.

Keeping Rio alive is critical to his continuing experiments and production of variants.
I watched this show 2 years ago and from time to time youtube recommends me reaction vids, I still get emotional when I see some of the highlights jfc 😭😂 there's something about it that is just so human. i saw in the making-of that the ending song is supposed to be "silco's song" because of the sister's reunion. The saddest scene in This episode is Vi realizing how much Powder has changed, how violent she’s become, that she’s not the sweet little girl she remembers.
I get chills everytime during the torch scene.
this episode is one of the best ones in the series, especially because they had the perfect moment to cut it off for suspense, but they carried through the meeting to the Firelights. I'm so excited to see how you guys like Act 3, and luckily you don't have to wait super long to get Season 2 since you're watching it this year. Season 2 should be out this November :D
Just when I thought Viktor's scene with Heimerdinger was emotional, the scene with Vi & Power/Jinx came to ensure I was throughly emotionally damaged. Such a wonderful episode!
Also, I really think Caitlyn's fallen for Vi. She traded her only form of protection, her rifle, to save Vi. Caitlyn doesn't owe Vi anything, Vi got herself in that fight, she got herself stabbed. If it weren't for Caitlyn stepping in, Vi would've been worse off or possibly even dead. Caitlyn's a smart cupcake, I don't think she foolishly traded her self defense because of some obligation for Vi, but rather for infatuation. She trusts Vi & knows Vi's capable of keeping her alive. When you watch someone you care for hurt, dying, you can't help but want to do everything you can for them, at whatever cost. As I mentioned in the last episode, I think Caitlyn's shooting to keep Vi safe, which is poetic in this case because to keep Vi safe, she had to give up her gun.

I just noticed the detail with Jayce's bracelet. Before he wears it with the crystal facing inside, but now with magic being more accepted he now wears it facing outwards

Yeah, this episode is pretty damn heart-wrenching, but beautiful. It took me a while to really vibe with that Guns for Hire song, but it definitely hits like a sack of bricks these days XD Really excited for you guys to get to the next episode, though!

Oof so good. That action scene is superb and it shows how good jinx has gotten. I think she would have been fine but she got distracted looking at her sister and got knocked out! Cait only wears 2 to 3 inch heels. That puts her at 5'10" flat foot at worst. Vi without heels is about 5'8".also if you factor in her height and compared her to when she was standing on her stool next to Jayce, Jayce is about 6'5".Mel is tall too.

I don't really feel like it's spoilers, since they dont really go much into it in the show, but..
I feel like sometimes there is a lot of context missing for those who aren't at least passingly familiar with Runeterra lore. They mention it, in passing, the Rune Wars (during an earlier council meeting the robot councilor mentions that mages greedy for magic/the Rune wars, nearly wiped out his species) and heimerdinger keeps flashing back to a flash of a mage in the air bathed in a flash of light. But without the context of knowing about the world runes and what they could do, and the havoc it caused as nations and mages sought to possess them and use them to destroy, rather than create.. well without that context i feel like heimer's arguments lose a lot of the umph they could have had otherwise xD Especially since i think the seed he's talking about is comparing the hextech matrix to a world rune.
Idk if it’s intentional but I always felt like the blue arrow on the knife stabbed into the map pointing at Sevika looks like/reminds me of the blue flare Jinx uses to tell Vi where she is.

I like the scene with Jayce and Mel. We finally get to see Mel open up some. We get a little of her back story and see that she is falling for Jayce.
We also see that Jayce and Victor didn’t fix some of those under-city problems yet with their hextech research. What have they been doing for 10 years?

Jayce is speaking some truth about time and lifespans. But as Heimerdinger said, he saw Nations destroyed by magic that looked like what they showed him. And it looked like by a single person, effectively a magical nuke. Heimerdinger doesn't want magical nuclear weapons to be created.

I love you praising the subtle LGBTQ inclusion - I also agree that this can well be a part of the plot but should normally not be the main focus for a really good show. That is also why this show is worldwide so well received and loved. Apart from some homophobes, almost everyone is invested in the Violyn ship ^^ because it is nicely written and not taking too much away from the main plot.
Cat and Vi are also called "Piltover's finest" in the game ;)

Apart from the really nice seasonal cinematics(watch from 2019 on) and the champion/story cinematics(just know that Arcane is a really really tiny bit of the world called Runeterra it plays in) it has actually 4 virtual music groups formed with the league characters that really popped off in the world. Maybe you want to dive in there as well?

just a fun fact: vi's punches have an estimated force of over 2,000 pounds! which explains why she was able to knock down the whole sign easily!
Even though that "healing potion" had only a drop of shimmer, I think that it enhanced Vi's punch that brought down the fragile structure.
