Non-spoiler background: The "undercity" used to be a mining colony for the upper city, Piltover. Piltover thrived, became an amazing beacon of prosperity and innovation. Meanwhile the undercity became a polluted slum. They're looked down on a lot, considered dirty. That's why people like the enforcer named Marcus referred to them as "trencher trash" because they live in these old mining trenches. You'll hear other slurs against them throughout the show. I don't want to say much more than that for fear of giving anything away. I always wished they had spent just a little more time pointing this out earlier in the series for some more context. Can't wait to see more! I love that you picked up on the fact that Vi and Powder didn't know the blue ball (giggle) caused the explosion in the apartment. Powder accidentally dropped it and wasn't looking. They were already halfway out of the building when the explosion went off. A lot of first time watchers don't catch that.
What more context do you want? What you described is visible in almost every image. Could it be that you got used to a narrator explicitly telling you whats going on? Arcanes storytelling and worldbuilding is so much better executed compared to anything we are used to, coming from the US.
@@nostalji93 It's a bit subtle, a throw-away line or two referencing it would've made things clearer; but even without it, pretty much anyone can figure out that the Undercity is the slums, and the people down there are oppressed, even without knowing the details of the hows and whys of it.
@@LadyDoomsinger To me its more than subtle, but I assume its up to what you are used to and up to your prefences. I simply prefer visual and in itself authentic/realistic appearing kind of" story-telling. I value similar things like J.R.R. Tolkien when it comes to fantasy. Others like you might prefer a more explicit approach of story telling. Thats also fine. But I think when it comes to movies "show don't tell" is a usually a better way of story telling. (There are exceptions ofc) Artistic references to the discrimination of the Undercity can be deducted from almost every picture. Its in the colours that show the pollution of the air, the poverty and hostile atmosphere. Almost every part of Zaun looks like dispair, violence and sickness. In clear contrast we have the friendly colours and clean shapes of Piltover. Also you see clear acts of discrimination throughtout the series. Thats literally what the enforcers are all about. Enforcing discrimination of the Undercity. At least from what we have seen. For instance do you remember the scenes about how they treat prisoners? Sorry if this was boring to you, but I am on some good weed :P
@@nostalji93 Oh, I absolutely agree that visual storytelling is by far superior, and "subtle" doesn't mean "bad" in my book. It just means, there's a risk that not everybody notices, which is a shame because it is both a great story and pretty important themes to think about in relation to real life. All of which is to say: While I appreciate and enjoy "visual" storytelling, I absolutely advocate for narrative exposition - in moderation. A simple single line just to explicitly state something, that is implied through subtext is not that much of an intrusion in my viewing experience, and it can greatly enhance the experience for someone who might have missed the visual cues, so why not? As far as I'm concerned, anyway... As long as it's not too excessive, so as it diminish the overall quality of the experience, of course.
"How do they make it look so good?" Three hundred plus artists pouring their creativity into it for six years. or, from the behind the scenes video series: “How do you texturize it to look like a painting?” .... "We paint!".

The vision for this series from the company that owns League of Legends was one of perfection or nothing at all. Arcane was almost canceled and scrapped when the voices behind the purse strings were not impressed with episode 1. Thank god they gave it a chance to blossom into the masterpiece that it is. I can't wait to watch you guys react to the next 8 episodes because it only gets better and better.

They cover every aspect of how the show was made, from the inspiration to the defeats and then success. It's really inspiring. This was _not_ an easy project that's for sure. Esp since this is their first and none of them had experience in making a whole series.

@@j.f.fisher5318 Morally gray? Isn't she clearly a "good guy" similar to Jayce. If I remember her character correctly she is powerful politician who uses her power and abilties to do good. Just more cold, practical and experienced than our "golden boy". I think if you call her morally "gray" than so are the actual heroes of the show. Which include a soziopath, a freedom fighter, a martian and someone from earth. Guess the different perspectives make every character morally "gray".

It's recognizing that everyone is generally doing what seems best from their perspective, rather than the less nuanced black and white, good vs evil morality we see in simpler stories. If something or someone is evil or good just because the story needs them to be, that's black and white morality. If a character is good or evil because their unique perspective and personality means that the actions they think are the best in any given situation leads to outcomes most people agree are good or bad, that's grey morality; even if you don't agree with the actions taken, being able to understand them and understand why a given character took said actions is what creates moral grey areas, and it's how the real world works which is why we usually praise writing that includes it.
@@DarthRayj No being a grey character doesn't mean you do what is best from your perspective and realisé others do aswell . Your definition fits for villains and heroes alike and is just how you write authentic characters. You could literally act "morally grey" by doing random stuff. Grey here just means neither good nor bad. And it doesn't really fit her character in expanse. She does mostly good things with good intentions, but she acts also clearly in a "bad" manner resorting to torture and stuff.

I'm enjoying your reaction. The advice given about the music was correct: All of the songs/music, including during the credits was written specifically for the show, they are part of the storytelling. You're also correct that the it bears multiple watches, it has depth.
This show is an absolute masterclass in how to write a wide array of strong, smart, diverse, interesting, self-actualized female characters... women as WOMEN, in all their empathy and vulnerability and limitless endurance, rather than simply having them act like men and implying that that's the only way to be strong. Not one of the characters is some token stand-in for an entire group, which frees them to have depth and nuance and even those all-important weaknesses that make them relatable to everyone rather than walking caricatures to lecture the audience with. Without spoiling anything, that's why the 'gay' aspect of the show will appeal to you both so much, because it's not some illustrative metaphor for 'the gay experience'... it's just about two human beings, two sincere souls who find a deep and true connection with one another... and they just happen to both be girls. It's never about gay... it's just about love, and THAT is what the world moves for. If you haven't already seen the 'Enemy' music video, you should watch it (and react to it) sooner rather than later. It's animated, using the characters from the show, but all original footage, and it gives some valuable insight into some of the things that take place during the show.
It's so interesting to see people react to this show now, after the second rewrite of the entire League universe. See, League originally came out in 2009, but as it increased in popularity over the following years, some of the creatives at Riot realized that they really weren't satisfied with the world they had come up with. So, I think sometime around 2013-ish, they literally redid the whole thing from the beginning - trashed all the existing characters' backstories and wrote new ones, same for the locations and so on. Fast forward 8 more years to 2021, when Arcane was released and of course it completely blew everyone away. One problem: the world of Arcane bore many decisive differences to the world of League as it existed, such as some characters not existing, as well as certain major events within the lore not occurring. With growing demand by fans of both the game and the series, they eventually opted to rewrite the entire world yet again last year, officially making Arcane's story canon and having it overwrite the existing lore. For this reason, it's easy to imagine the rest of the universe will be subject to similar changes from here on out.
The unique art style is a blend of 3d animation and 2d hand drawn art , different methodologies are used for different environments to give it a unique stylized flair. It’s actually crazy how long and intricate the process was to make this.. there’s a RUclips documentary on the making of arcane that you should watch AFTER the 9 episodes. It’s so good

This is my first time checking out your content and I really enjoyed your genuine excitement and thoughts watching the show. I don't comment often but I absolutely love Arcane. While the game League of Legends is definitely not for everyone, the lore of the world and it's characters is rich and compelling. The creators brought all of that to life and told a beautifully human story that anyone can enjoy. If you are interested in how the show was made, I highly suggest to watch "Arcane: Bridging the Rift". It's a 5 episodes docuseries on RUclips, explaining how Arcane came to be, almost as good as the show itself 😊

To clarify some previous comments, Piltover (upper and lower) is the same city. Mining was, and still is, in fact, a large part of their industry. Structurally, in the beginning, the city was on fairly even ground, there was no true Upper or lower city. However, mining became too aggressive and careless and one day caused a chunk of the city to collapse. I don't know how extensive the damage was to the city that fell or how much rebuilding the people had to do. But that was when the start of the true upper and lower parts of the same city began. Over time, the remaining upper city continued to prosper and with much more resources at their disposal were able to control the lower city population. Not exactly slaves, but still lesser citizens.
If you got back to the bridge scene and pause on the dead mother, you'll notice in the darker area is a man with pink hair with the woman with blue, they are indeed sisters
Arcane is a true 10/10. It's as close to perfect as you could realistically get. I haven't seen anything on it's level for a very long time. Glad you are enjoying it thus far - it only gets better.
Probably my favourite piece of animation in the last 10 years. It’s absolutely brilliant. I’ll love to see you guys react to the amazing music video of the theme song Enemy. They animated materials specifically for it which doesn’t appear in the show. That’s dedication to the craft.
The show`s based on a MOBA that`s run by a video game company in LA called Riot Games and is animated by a Parisian animation studio called Fortiche. Both were founded in 2009 and have since greatly matured and advanced their animation style which mixes 3-D character models, 2-D props and effects and matte painted backgrounds.

The lgbt is just the cherry on top of this masterpiece, not the main reason it is recommended so heavily. It's an incredibly crafted tv show, my all time favorite, can't wait for you to finish it and to get season 2!
If you love how realism the animation on this, you would love: Jin Roh: Wolf Brigade (1999 film) and Patlabor: the Movie. Also, Serial Experiments Lain was a great mini series. The movie Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise is also phenomenal.
If you're looking for more animated shows to watch, I definitely recommend a series called RWBY(pronounced Ruby). It's an American animated series created by the animation company Rooster Teeth. It has lots of great action scenes and has an amazing story!
this series is a running truck that will leave trampled in the middle of the street, hungering for more. a greek tragedy, no good, no bad, just flawed characters searching for their own way. going in blind is the best thing that you could've have done. oh... and get tissues.

The League of Legends universe has a loooot of lore. This show covers and expands on just a small fraction of it. Also Powder and Vi are infact biological sisters. Natural hair colour can be pretty much anything in this universe so their parents probably had blueish and pinkish hair. (Also little man having white hair!)
Arcane is such a good show, and it got me heavily into the lore of the League of Legends universe. The basic joke is that the original game does not deserve the lore that was created for it, because this is an extensive world. Arcane is set pretty much exclusively in the twin cities of Piltover and Zaun, and is the more technologically advanced region of the world. Some of the other regions include an east Asian style continent where all of the buildings are grown from living trees, a pirate town made of shipwrecked boats next to a haunted sea, an Egyptian style desert land and even a Norse flavored icy region.
@@henry.-.2183 I learned a lot about the world from a pair of RUclipsrs; Necrit and JustBlais. They have some videos where they break down the various regions of the world of Runeterra, the planet that Arcane is set on.
You probably don't want to do this yet since I don't think he has spoiler-free videos, but the RUclipsr Schnee has AMAZING videos about Arcane. I've watched almost all of them and they opened up the show for me in a totally new way. Highly recommend (when you've watched all 9 episodes)!
Idk if u guys finished recording the whole thing, but just in case it isn't: the show was released in 3's, so 3 eps every week, and each part pretty much covers an arc. So I highly suggest u guys watch it in that sequence, tho every ep is also fine
Professional fighters (boxers and mma fighters) have reviewed the fight scenes in this series and have given them high marks for authenticity and realism. Everything shown in the fight scenes (though out the series) are what would happen in a real fight by trained fighters, with only a few minor licenses taken for cinematic purposes.
The experience you get going into it blind is very different than if you know all the lore. For my part I knew some and was blind in other cases and enjoyed the parts where I knew nothing more. It works perfectly either way. That said, the rewatch value is huge because there's so much you just can't understand the significance of the first time through, whether or not you know the lore. And crazy thing is, the first two are the slowest episode as they introduce the characters and build the world. Cheers!
Other stuff that's well worth checking out is the music video Enemy with all new footage. I wish it could be recommended now because it shows a lot of cool slice of life stuff that gives a deeper sense of the kids' lives. But there's minor spoilers for episode 4 so better to not watch it until then, but at the same time it's salt in the wound for a scene in the third act so best to watch it while watching the second act sometime. :) Also the Bridging The Rift bts series is great.
About the League of Legends universe: The place in which Arcane takes place is one zone or region in the world of League of Legends. Out of all the regions, Piltover & Zaun is the most Earth-like place, the rest is full of fantasy inspired elements, very interesting story-lines, characters and designs. This, in my opinion, makes Piltover & Zaun the most "boring" place in League of Legends. The show taking place here isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially in the early seasons, because it gives a familiar atmosphere with the big city and the struggle for power in it, and our focus is more on the story itself, rather than the setting. It also opened the door for new people to get to know the League of Legends universe, because if the show took place in a place that's more detached from reality, like Ionia, Shurima, Targon, or the Shadow Isles, the show would need to spend a significant part of its runtime explaining things, or it would need the audience to be familiar with the lore of League of Legends. Getting invested in the lore is not hard at all, almost all of the 160+ characters have lore written for them, which establishes their personality, gives more depth to their region of origin, and links them to major events and other characters. Nevertheless, I would be really curious how they would tackle other regions in Arcane, and I would be very happy to see more playable characters from League of Legends (Champions) appear in the show, especially because one of the most interesting characters in the entire game (if not in gaming history) visits Piltover in the "Awaken (Season 2019)" cinematic. His name is Jhin. If we get to see him in Season 2, and his personality will mirror that of his in the game, we should have a pretty kickass story-line. But then it would be very cool to venture out into other regions and see characters like Viego or Aatrox in the show, but we don't know if Riot wants to explore a larger part of the League of Legends lore or not. Yeah I never played the game and don't really plan to but this show is absolutely fire! Such great storytelling, animation, worldbuilding, and characters.
I think not knowing the world makes the series a better watch, everything is new, and without expectation. Without information the players of the game had, you can't anticipate future plot. I'd personally suggest not watching any lore videos, and even skipping the intro of the show for the rest the first watch. I'm glad people are finding this show, it was criminally not shown the love it deserves. At least that was the case where I live. Good luck, and have fun watching.

The vision for this series from the company that owns League of Legends was one of perfection or nothing at all. Arcane was almost canceled and scrapped when the voices behind the purse strings were not impressed with episode 1. Thank god they gave it a chance to blossom into the masterpiece that it is. I can't wait to watch you guys react to the next 8 episodes because it only gets better and better.

They cover every aspect of how the show was made, from the inspiration to the defeats and then success. It's really inspiring. This was _not_ an easy project that's for sure. Esp since this is their first and none of them had experience in making a whole series.
Illustrations at times usually look better than the final product. What makes this series so incredible looking is it's hybrid mix of 2D&3D images.

I think if you call her morally "gray" than so are the actual heroes of the show. Which include a soziopath, a freedom fighter, a martian and someone from earth. Guess the different perspectives make every character morally "gray".

It's recognizing that everyone is generally doing what seems best from their perspective, rather than the less nuanced black and white, good vs evil morality we see in simpler stories. If something or someone is evil or good just because the story needs them to be, that's black and white morality. If a character is good or evil because their unique perspective and personality means that the actions they think are the best in any given situation leads to outcomes most people agree are good or bad, that's grey morality; even if you don't agree with the actions taken, being able to understand them and understand why a given character took said actions is what creates moral grey areas, and it's how the real world works which is why we usually praise writing that includes it.
@@DarthRayj No being a grey character doesn't mean you do what is best from your perspective and realisé others do aswell . Your definition fits for villains and heroes alike and is just how you write authentic characters. You could literally act "morally grey" by doing random stuff. Grey here just means neither good nor bad. And it doesn't really fit her character in expanse. She does mostly good things with good intentions, but she acts also clearly in a "bad" manner resorting to torture and stuff.

This show is an absolute masterclass in how to write a wide array of strong, smart, diverse, interesting, self-actualized female characters... women as WOMEN, in all their empathy and vulnerability and limitless endurance, rather than simply having them act like men and implying that that's the only way to be strong. Not one of the characters is some token stand-in for an entire group, which frees them to have depth and nuance and even those all-important weaknesses that make them relatable to everyone rather than walking caricatures to lecture the audience with.
Without spoiling anything, that's why the 'gay' aspect of the show will appeal to you both so much, because it's not some illustrative metaphor for 'the gay experience'... it's just about two human beings, two sincere souls who find a deep and true connection with one another... and they just happen to both be girls. It's never about gay... it's just about love, and THAT is what the world moves for.
If you haven't already seen the 'Enemy' music video, you should watch it (and react to it) sooner rather than later. It's animated, using the characters from the show, but all original footage, and it gives some valuable insight into some of the things that take place during the show.

It's so interesting to see people react to this show now, after the second rewrite of the entire League universe. See, League originally came out in 2009, but as it increased in popularity over the following years, some of the creatives at Riot realized that they really weren't satisfied with the world they had come up with. So, I think sometime around 2013-ish, they literally redid the whole thing from the beginning - trashed all the existing characters' backstories and wrote new ones, same for the locations and so on. Fast forward 8 more years to 2021, when Arcane was released and of course it completely blew everyone away. One problem: the world of Arcane bore many decisive differences to the world of League as it existed, such as some characters not existing, as well as certain major events within the lore not occurring. With growing demand by fans of both the game and the series, they eventually opted to rewrite the entire world yet again last year, officially making Arcane's story canon and having it overwrite the existing lore. For this reason, it's easy to imagine the rest of the universe will be subject to similar changes from here on out.

The unique art style is a blend of 3d animation and 2d hand drawn art , different methodologies are used for different environments to give it a unique stylized flair. It’s actually crazy how long and intricate the process was to make this.. there’s a RUclips documentary on the making of arcane that you should watch AFTER the 9 episodes. It’s so good

To clarify some previous comments, Piltover (upper and lower) is the same city. Mining was, and still is, in fact, a large part of their industry. Structurally, in the beginning, the city was on fairly even ground, there was no true Upper or lower city. However, mining became too aggressive and careless and one day caused a chunk of the city to collapse. I don't know how extensive the damage was to the city that fell or how much rebuilding the people had to do. But that was when the start of the true upper and lower parts of the same city began. Over time, the remaining upper city continued to prosper and with much more resources at their disposal were able to control the lower city population. Not exactly slaves, but still lesser citizens.

The show`s based on a MOBA that`s run by a video game company in LA called Riot Games and is animated by a Parisian animation studio called Fortiche. Both were founded in 2009 and have since greatly matured and advanced their animation style which mixes 3-D character models, 2-D props and effects and matte painted backgrounds.

If you're looking for more animated shows to watch, I definitely recommend a series called RWBY(pronounced Ruby). It's an American animated series created by the animation company Rooster Teeth. It has lots of great action scenes and has an amazing story!
this series is a running truck that will leave trampled in the middle of the street, hungering for more. a greek tragedy, no good, no bad, just flawed characters searching for their own way. going in blind is the best thing that you could've have done. oh... and get tissues.

The League of Legends universe has a loooot of lore. This show covers and expands on just a small fraction of it.
Also Powder and Vi are infact biological sisters. Natural hair colour can be pretty much anything in this universe so their parents probably had blueish and pinkish hair. (Also little man having white hair!)
Mouser was filled with shrapnel so she woulda messed that guy up
Arcane is such a good show, and it got me heavily into the lore of the League of Legends universe. The basic joke is that the original game does not deserve the lore that was created for it, because this is an extensive world. Arcane is set pretty much exclusively in the twin cities of Piltover and Zaun, and is the more technologically advanced region of the world. Some of the other regions include an east Asian style continent where all of the buildings are grown from living trees, a pirate town made of shipwrecked boats next to a haunted sea, an Egyptian style desert land and even a Norse flavored icy region.

Idk if u guys finished recording the whole thing, but just in case it isn't: the show was released in 3's, so 3 eps every week, and each part pretty much covers an arc. So I highly suggest u guys watch it in that sequence, tho every ep is also fine

Professional fighters (boxers and mma fighters) have reviewed the fight scenes in this series and have given them high marks for authenticity and realism. Everything shown in the fight scenes (though out the series) are what would happen in a real fight by trained fighters, with only a few minor licenses taken for cinematic purposes.

The experience you get going into it blind is very different than if you know all the lore. For my part I knew some and was blind in other cases and enjoyed the parts where I knew nothing more. It works perfectly either way. That said, the rewatch value is huge because there's so much you just can't understand the significance of the first time through, whether or not you know the lore.
And crazy thing is, the first two are the slowest episode as they introduce the characters and build the world. Cheers!

Other stuff that's well worth checking out is the music video Enemy with all new footage. I wish it could be recommended now because it shows a lot of cool slice of life stuff that gives a deeper sense of the kids' lives. But there's minor spoilers for episode 4 so better to not watch it until then, but at the same time it's salt in the wound for a scene in the third act so best to watch it while watching the second act sometime. :)

About the League of Legends universe: The place in which Arcane takes place is one zone or region in the world of League of Legends. Out of all the regions, Piltover & Zaun is the most Earth-like place, the rest is full of fantasy inspired elements, very interesting story-lines, characters and designs. This, in my opinion, makes Piltover & Zaun the most "boring" place in League of Legends. The show taking place here isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially in the early seasons, because it gives a familiar atmosphere with the big city and the struggle for power in it, and our focus is more on the story itself, rather than the setting. It also opened the door for new people to get to know the League of Legends universe, because if the show took place in a place that's more detached from reality, like Ionia, Shurima, Targon, or the Shadow Isles, the show would need to spend a significant part of its runtime explaining things, or it would need the audience to be familiar with the lore of League of Legends. Getting invested in the lore is not hard at all, almost all of the 160+ characters have lore written for them, which establishes their personality, gives more depth to their region of origin, and links them to major events and other characters.
Nevertheless, I would be really curious how they would tackle other regions in Arcane, and I would be very happy to see more playable characters from League of Legends (Champions) appear in the show, especially because one of the most interesting characters in the entire game (if not in gaming history) visits Piltover in the "Awaken (Season 2019)" cinematic. His name is Jhin. If we get to see him in Season 2, and his personality will mirror that of his in the game, we should have a pretty kickass story-line. But then it would be very cool to venture out into other regions and see characters like Viego or Aatrox in the show, but we don't know if Riot wants to explore a larger part of the League of Legends lore or not.

I think not knowing the world makes the series a better watch, everything is new, and without expectation. Without information the players of the game had, you can't anticipate future plot. I'd personally suggest not watching any lore videos, and even skipping the intro of the show for the rest the first watch. I'm glad people are finding this show, it was criminally not shown the love it deserves. At least that was the case where I live. Good luck, and have fun watching.
