What I love about the action scenes in this show is that they're not just there for the sake of being there. They're there because they help the plot progress. Fight scene in ep 3 results in the story's main tragedy, the one in ep 5 lets Silco know Vi is alive, the one in ep 6 causes Vi and Powder to be separated again, and so on.

30:45 Meesh is spot on here. Remember the doctor told VIktor that the shimmer variant he gave him had "everything he needed to survive a violent transition". When Viktor goes back to the lab he picks up the needle gun but it's empty. In his desperate state, he proceeds the transmutation without the shimmer in what very probably would've killed him, much like the plants in that previous episode.

One of the many things that make that make the writing of this show so great is that all of the major characters have a different perspective on the central conflict and none of them are 100% right or 100% wrong. It's not the good guys want peace and the bad guys want war. It's more complicated than that.

I’ve always had a crush on Cait, but damn, 27:29, that facial expression and close shot with her hair wet, with her blue eyes shining with determination, bitting her lip like if she were thinking “No, this is not over, I won’t ever forget you”… By the way, Vi and cupcake are not oil and water, they are blood and water, and from the shower scene we can see they mix perfectly. And the music in that scene… excellent, as always. Also, I liked that they didn’t kiss during the rain scene. I mean, in S2 I want a better version of Mel and Jayce love scene of 1x5 with Cait and Vi as much as you, and I want them to kiss, but I feel like kiss in the rain is so cliché, so I was actually surprised that the producers went another way with it and made it more original.

Before Mel's mom showed up, I'm pretty sure Mel was wanting to use force against the undercity, meanwhile Jayce was hesitant about using hextech for weapons. Once Mel's mom arrived in Piltover, she ended up convincing Jayce he needed to fight (the aftermath on the bridge also contributed to that) The opposite happened to Mel though, she seemed to be reminded of the warlike ways of Noxus and she changed her mind and wanted a peaceful solution.
I just thought that was cool, they kind of switched roles for a little while.

    • @overgroll

No. She wanted to be prepared defensively, in case things turned for the worse, not to launch an offensive. She's very unlike her mother. If you go back to her nightmare at the end we see the amulet in the blood pool, when Mel wakes up it transitions right into the painting that depicts that very scene. She despises her mother and everything she stands for. That's why she gave Jayce that look in the council, she saw that her mother got to his head.

I agree with you that the show did this subversion very well. Compared to Heimer, Mel seemed like a warmonger. Now that we get a comparison to a real warmonger, her mother, and consider her point of view; we have to admit that she has a point.

One thing i like about the story telling is how subtle yet how inportant Cait / Vi is. If they were not getting closer, then none of Jinx's delusions or fear of replacement would happen, neither would most of Vi's actions. It's there in plain sight for people to see, and without it the whole thing from episode 6 would play out completely differently.

So arcane did relate this to how have a drug lord and when they use kids and innocent civilians to make them work because the drug lord made it the only option for someone to work and provide food for their families. Jayce shooting the kid symbolize what Mel was talking about, their are always civilians caught in the crossfire.

    • @A.K.33
      @A.K.33 3 месяца назад

It isn't the drug lord that is forcing kids to work for them. The system, represented by Jayce or the entire council is forcing them into the hands of drug lords for survival. I think we should never ignore how piltover is exploiting zaun and thereby creating a lot of the issues within zaun aswell as their own threats like Silco or Jinx.

Fun parallel with Victor. In the scene where he was a child playing with his toy boat, after her lets it go he struggles to keep up with it due to his illness/leg. He eventually falls over before following it into the cave. In this episode, after using the hex core, he is running along the docks, and eventually outpaces the boats in the background.

Something interesting about Noxus, the place where Mel and her mother are from, is that they are colonizers and conquerors. Their lands don’t have a lot of resources so they invade other lands to make them part of Noxus to expand their empire. Mel’s mother was probably sent by Swain to check on Piltover, since Noxus has been trying to get their hands on it for a while. That’s also why there are a bunch of ravens, Swain uses ravens to spy on countries from afar with the power of a demon that he has control over.

I think that's what Mel's been trying for the entire time she's been there. Scheming to turn Piltover into a puppet regime by subverting the council from the inside and becoming the shadow leader of the council by having everyone else in her pocket. After getting exiled, Mel is trying to prove herself (and her ways) to her mother. (Only to get what she thought she wanted in Ep. 9, and realize that's not her anymore.)

Yup, and also in the same style as her other painting, making it very clear she painted it herself. A reminder of what she probably considers to be the cost of failure in her scheming. On the balcony, in public, where every visitor can see it, is the painting of her home Noxus we saw her work on. But in private, in her bedroom, right above her bed, there's this.
The Noxus painting shows up in two more scenes in Episode 9, different the second time, calling back to Young Mel's little speech in this episode's prologue. Mel's arc is probably the most subtle one among the main cast of this season, and being a politician and expert manipulator the way she presents herself and consciously interacts with others is very calculated, but the two paintings gives us glimpses into what's really going on with her.

16:00 He's the founder of the city. lol
16:45 The background... Foreshadowing of Noxus invading Piltover for the hex tech?
26:18 He wasn't inside. It ran past the kid. It's a consequence of war and Jayce realized that in that moment. Vi on the other hand, just like with Vander, still tries to solve things with her fists.
I'm glad our pretty girl got some "redemption". Not that she needed it really, since she didn't actually do anything bad, but pretty much everyone thinks she has ulterior motives when she's just doing politics. I think you could always see that she was a good person whenever things got personal, even if it often just was portrayed subtly through the micro expressions within her face.

Somebody actually noticed that Marcus was just trying to follow Grace's example by making deals with Undercity crime bosses to keep things under control. His problem is that he sees or saw no difference between one Undercity citizen and another other. As far he was concerned, Vander and Silco were the same thing and that he was inherently superior to both of them by default. He eventually learned his lesson, but by then, he was in the spider's web, and because of that, so was his daughter. Show could've done a better job showing this though. I feel like the writers had bigger plans for Marcus' character, but sort of just abandoned him halfway through and then just killed him off.

Why is reload the page & create a new tab (shortcuts) night next to one another. I wrote so much for it all to be erased... well, time to write it again.
When she was first introduced, I wasn't a huge fan of Mel. She seemed to be using Jayce, distracting him from his obligations to Viktor. The bond Jayce & Viktor had seemed to diminish after she came into his life. But in this episode, she really held her ground. We witness that even at an early age, Mel was opposed to senseless bloodshed, even so far as to accept being expelled by her own mother no less. Instead of taking the easy path, going against her morals, she still sticks to them. Mad respect for not compromising onesself for acceptance or easy gain.
It's not surprising Silco & Jinx developed a father/daughter bond. It seems pretty apparent now looking back at it. Silco trusts Jinx to inject his eye, he makes excuses for her when she messed/acts up (even so far as to blame his subordinates instead), he cares about her feelings. He couldn't hide his emotions when he saw Jinx lying there seemingly dead. Sure, he had the blue orb, but what he had to lose to get it (I believe) was too much for him. He was already in the first stage of grief: denial, when he bright Jinx to Singed. Anger's second, so probably best Singed roofied Silco, just in case Jinx couldn't be saved.
At 06:53 that's when it feels like Jayce's stance changed. It was at that moment that he realized sitting idly by wasn't going to stop all this senseless bloodshed & his talk with Mel's mother is what cements it. While on the contrary, Mel sees it as a future if the violence is allowed to continue. Instead of furthering hostilities between both sides, it sounds like she wants to find a resolution that everyone can accept. Mel's eyes at the end of that scene, they're determined.
You know Caitlyn's infatuated by Vi by how she defends Vi every chance she gets. The way she introduces Vi to her mother, it's almost like she's telling her, "Deal with it, mom (sorry, mum), Vi's from the Undercity." It's nice to see that the father's supportive. He doesn't seem to be worried about Vi, just cares about his daughter's safety & happiness. That pause, when Caitlyn introduces Vi to the councilors, "Even though we *pause* failed her", it's almost like she regrets saying we; the way she directly looks at Vi almost gives the impression she wants Vi to know she meant herself, that she (Caitlyn) failed her (Vi). Then stopping herself from implementing Jinx, the woman that blew her up (twice), & killed her fellow enforcers, is just further proof that Caitlyn likes Vi.
Mel's mother isn't wrong. The council's actions haven't resolved the tensions between the Undercity & Piltover. What Topside does to the Undercity isn't right either, so it feels wrong to say Piltover should just go down there & wipe the Undercity out because it's their (Topside) fault. If they'd "gave a shit" about them, then they would've turn to two-bit gangsters for salvation. Good thing we just watched Saving Private Ryan, because a certain nation in the 1930, after losing WWI, with a dead economy, with starving people, turned to one man who promised salvation. What I'm getting at here is that two wrongs don't make a right. Mel's on the right track, that diplomacy's the right path, but instead of trying to kill the organization at the head, she needs to kill it with a lot of little cuts. Also, "I'm off to sample the local cuisine." I shudder every time I hear that.
I hope Caitlyn understood what Vi was saying, after she asked her what happened to Power, because in simple terms Vi admitting to creating Jinx, & it hurts her so much inside. Regardless of whether or not she was captured, Vi personally believes it was because of her that Powder turned into Jinx. Ever since learning Power was still alive, & discovering what she'd become, it's like an open wound that keeps being reopened.
If you haven't seen the Hunger Games movies, I'd suggest giving them a watch, because watching Singed save Jinx, gives me flashbacks to one of the Hunger Games books. That's all I'm going to say about that, don't want to say too much if those who haven't watched it decide to. The fact that Jinx feels so threatened by Caitlyn could be seen as a good sign for how Jinx feels towards Vi, right(?), because it means Jinx wants to be that close to Vi again.
Also got to respect Heimerdinger for being the only councilors (current or former) to properly visit the Undercity. Also, we know Marcus' dead because they showed the body, but the fact that they didn't show Ekko's should tip off the fact that he wasn't really dead. I wonder what they're going to accomplish now that they're together (I don't remember what happens with them).
It's such a shame Sky had to die. She wasn't flesh out, but it was obvious how much she liked Viktor; worrying about his health, asking him out to venues, concerning herself when he slept in the lab. Her sacrifice allowed Viktor to run (if I'm watching this right). I want to draw a parallel between this & Fullmetal Alchemist, but I don't want anyone who hasn't watched that anime to get spoiled. Watch it, & then hopefully you see it too.
I swear, this episode had so many good tracks. From the somber tones during the council scene, Vi's & Caitlyn's goodbye, Viktor's scenes, & the fight scene. Everything keeps one upping itself every episode. That's just how it is, an expectation for each episode.
Alright, I was going to post a video that related to the shower scene, but it had a spoiler for episode 9; so, instead of that, I'm going to post a funny comment I saw on it. That moment when you realize Jinx saw Caitlyn naked before Vi did. Okay, I'm out, super thrilled that another Arcane episode came out, while also pretty sad too. But there's always November for Season 2. Thank you again for humoring my outrageously long essay, till next time. =^._.^=

someone has definitely already mentioned this but just in case it helps with clearing up any confusion; regarding victor's leg transformation and sky
Victor's leg was already transformed before the sky incident. He had drawn/carved the runes on just his leg, injected himself with the shimmer variant the doc gave him, cut his hand and boom : Leg transformation. In this episode we see him walk and run for the first time ever with the new leg.
He's hooked: he tries again; but this time with the runes carved essentially all over his body(much more than just a leg)....but he's out of shimmer, so he tries it without shimmer. sky interrupts and essentially becomes the sacrifice for his left hand. If you look closely you'll see his left hand has now also been transformed, but just the hand(that was touching the rune), not his whole arm. a lil weird how sky's whole life/body was a smaller sacrifice than a vial of shimmer.
---- remember the beginning of episode 7 where the doc tells him that the plants were dying and his experiments were failing because the problem was with the subjects not the experiments. So he pretty much needs to use shimmer to do it safely. If sky didn't show up when she did... its very likely victor would have died rapidly just like the plants. I think in season 2 we'll probably see him trying to get more shimmer so he can properly transform.

As many reactors as I've watched, I haven't ever seen anyone remark or wonder about where Mel's mom (Ambessa) is! And now you have me noodling it for a moment, and I think we can safely say this is a wing at the Medarda estate. Our clues are Jase looking around as if he hasn't seen this area before, so it isn't the main area, and the mural of war, consistent with what we know of Noxus culture and of the Medardas. The scene has a subtle underscore for how wealthy the Medardas are, as this is essentially an opulent estate as embassy.

  • @Shiftry87

The reson why Sky died and not Viktor is becouse of the shimmer varient that he got from Singed in the undercity. The shimmer was a stabilising agent in the process which keps Viktor safe. Sky dident have any of that injected before hand so just like the early plants her body rejected the transformation and got destroyed instead. Sky´s body simply dident have the resiliant that the shimmer varient gave Viktor to survive the process.
What made the deal betwinn Grason and Vander work was that it was an understanding of respect and abit of compromising. We stay out of your buisness if u guys stay out of ours sort of deal and it worked becouse both Piltover and the undercity benefited from it and they both knew the chaos that it would cause if they dident keep the situation in check. Markus may have thought he could have done the same but Silco dosent care about the outcome aslong as he gets what he wants and u cant make deals with a guy like that. By the time Markus figuered that out it was already to late.
Also if u think that Singed (Undercity Doctor) did some questionable things in Arcane then u should read some of hes League of Legends lore storys. Singed is the very definition of a mad scientist and he simply dosent care about any suffering what so ever so long as hes getting something benefitial out of hes experiments. Hes Arcane version is tame by comparison.
They also did a good job of showing the general ide of how Noxus where the Medardas are from is run. The whole ide in Noxus is that if u think u are better at something then the guy doing it then stop talking about it and prove that u can take it and do it better. Noxus ide is that they value strenght over all. This scene dident make it into this video but before they show the mom killing the girl is a good example as she says "I would give u the world child, if u can prove u can take it" It dosent always mean brutal combat but often it can get to that point hense why most of Noxus leadership within various areas of the country are very powerful warriors or mages. The "after victory cinematic" showed this perfectly.

This is one of my fave eps in the show. The fight scene is basically a love letter to LoL players since we get to see Jayce and Vi do their thing. Some trivia when it comes to the fight scene; one of the artist featured is the voice actor for Fin (yellow jacket cyberpunk lookin' ass who hates Silco). I also love how one of you said 'here comes Vi' as Vi comes rushing in. When Vi got released back in 2012, she had a login theme song. In the song, the artist says 'Here comes Vi'. Anyways, A lot of character development also happened. Especially with Mel, but this episode really confused me when it comes Mel's motives. Earlier in the season, Mel was trying to convince Jayce to start making weapons which Jayce refused. But in this ep, when Jayce was wanting to go take action, and all the sudden Mel is like 'Jayce, you don't know war.' I've seen this show and watched countless reaction channels to this, and I'm still confused on Mel's character motives. All things considered, my fave part of this ep is Darth Heimer.

The real question in my mind is whether the youths in the Shimmer factory were, in fact, slaved -- or whether they took this opportunity for income and safety, given what everyday life has started to look like in the Undercity. Along those lines, are those in the combat Shimmer-suits being well compensated to stay on guard and in reserve just in case of any problems? We don't know for sure, from what's shown, but a lot is implied. There's so much nuance on every perspective in this show, which is one of the reason I love it so much.
