- The Forch railway is a local railway line in the Swiss canton of Zürich. It is owned and operated by the Forchbahn AG, and is branded as line S18 of the Zürich S-Bahn. The standard Zürcher Verkehrsverbund (ZVV) zonal fare tariffs apply to the line. The route is very interesting, operating over tram tracks, interurban-style reserved rights of way, and even a rapid transit-style tunnel section! Enjoy!
The line opened in 1912 and links the towns of Esslingen and Forch to Rehalp, an outer suburb of the city of Zürich. From Rehalp, trains continue over the Zürich tram system to a terminus at Zürich Stadelhofen FB, outside the Zürich Stadelhofen railway station in central Zürich.
The line is built to metre gauge. Between Esslingen and Rehalp the line has a length of some 13 km (8.1 mi), with the continuation over the Zürich tram system adding an extra 3 km (1.9 mi) of route.

Taken in September 2022.
I remember riding the S18 as early as 24th July 1998. I rode it from ZH-Stadelhofen to Forch, with underground stations at Zumikon and Maiacher. At the time they were "epic creepy" - you can look at my previous "Ricola" video from 10th September 2000 and see how creepy Maiacher was. In the 2000's, Zumikon and Maiacher were renovated and do not look nearly as creepy. This is one of two S-Bahn lines that still use direct current, but this is the only one using meter gauge, to be compatible with the tram lines which they share.
Amazing railway!! Colorful trains. Thanks DJ Hammers😀💚
Amezing video I love narrow gauge railways. It looks so clean and eficient
you should check out the new L20 thats been operating in Zurich now for a year :)
Thanks for taking the time to do this run \m/
Good evening, does anyone know if, before the creation of the ZVV, it was possible to use the FB between Realp and Stadelhofen with a ticket or season ticket for tram 11 and vice versa? Thank you very much for your availability and for your precious collaboration
Kinda reminds me of Boston’s Green Line
Hey ya’ll, amazing video, i write from Sicily Italy a.D. 3.XII.2022

Why are EU transit solutions so much quieter than in the US.
Wheel noise plagues US rail transit -- these glide around curves without wheel slip causing the high-pitched screeching.
