The Oklahoma dust bowl created such a mass exodus for so many families. So many genealogical stories come back to moving out of Oklahoma during this time. We love your historically, detailed stories.

You talk about how hot it was. It was January of 71 and mom and dad decided to move from California to NC. One of the vehicles blew a freeze plug and we stayed at the Texas Motel and Cafe for 3 days waiting for the part to come from Dallas. It was so cold, my ears felt like they were going to freeze off walking from the coffee shop to the motel room.

Sounds awful. If you don’t mind my asking, do you mind sharing any memories of the cafe/ motel?

I was raised in Hereford. Attended High School there, Sr 71 and frequented GlenRio on occasion. There was s bar/saloon there and the owners also owned the bar/saloon in Grady NM. These bars were watering holes for the ranch hands and dry land farmers.
On occasion back in the 1960’s high stakes poker was at play. Going to GlenRio from Bootleg Corner was a long drive on a dirt/caliche road that meandered on the Caprock for much of the drive. Rattle snakes as large as fence post were often seen napping on the caliche road in the shade of the Caprock bluffs. I need to right a book about adventures in west Deaf Smith county.

Well, let me know if you write it, because I want to read it. I love that whole area from Adrian to San Jon. Thanks for the cool history and for watching.

I believe the owner of the only business there lives nearby, but not in Glenrio. Thanks.
