Saturday evening, glass of wine and a new Keith Dotson upload...that's it folks life just don't get better than this! Loving the road trip and stunning work as ever sir...
Excellent video, Keith! I love this part of the country. Even though Route 66 has been photographed ad nauseum, I still think it is a fascinating place to see, explore and photograph. I would have not been able to pass up the image of the window with CAFE painted on it and it's shadow on the floor behind it at 11:04. So many photo opportunities! Thanks for sharing and I'm looking forward to part 2.
See there!? I didn't even see that shot, although I sure did consider photographs of the window. I love how other creative people see shots that I bypassed. And yes, I'm with you -- I also love this part of the country -- and you have the added benefit of living much closer! I only made about half my planned destinations.
@@Keithdotson That’s one thing that I dislike about watching photography on youtube - I get so jealous when I see images in someone else’s video but I can’t take them 🤣
Many years ago, my wife (at the time) and I made a big road trip to the Pacific Northwest and down the coast of Oregon and California. I would take still photos when we stopped and she was using a video camera while we were moving. Looking at the video after we were home I saw so many potential photos that I didn’t even notice while I was driving. It’s a big world with endless photo opportunities, isn’t it?
What kind of camera are you using for your still photography? What's a good way to get true black and white from your digital? I'm using a Canon M50 mirrorless
I use a Sony A7RIV. There are many ways to get great black and white from the digital files, but I shoot in color, then convert using Nik Silver Efex, or DXO FilmPack. Both of those will give you very good black and white files. I'm now printing inkjets on high-quality paper, but you can have true black and white gelatin silver prints from digital files at labs like Digital Silver. I hope I answered your question.
Interesting seeing wind power in Texas! :-) How do you mount your action camera in the car when it's shooting out the side window? These were some fabulous B & W images. That door lying on the floor full of debris was really a cool shot. I've been really interested in doing this type of content in my area for a while. Your channel has really been a nice instructional resource. It's also been useful to see that the Osmo Action Camera is easily sufficient for vlogging like this. I have a GoPro Hero 5, but don't think that will be sufficient because of the lack of stability. Again, thanks for a very cool video. Looking forward to the next part!
Thanks for the nice words Charlie. Yeah there are actually a lot of windmills in West Texas. The Osmo is mostly handheld on a small handle, hence the often skewed horizons! I keep my eyes on the road, so those out the window shots are just a matter of holding it up and pointing it in the right direction, and hoping for the best. My video skills are pretty low-tech but I'm slowly but surely upgrading.
If I could post a picture, I would. They tore off all the roofs & tore everything down to the cement block walls. They got rid of all the trash, so it's a lot cleaner than it was a year ago. It's just a shell now.

Best comment ever! Thanks Rick -- Does this video go best with red or white wine?
@@Keithdotson Clearly Red !
Hard to believe that you find this place hard to believe!

Right! After Terry's observation, I'm calculating what it would take to go all the way back to get a shot of that window with the shadow!
@@Keithdotson You never know. It might be worth it. Imagine what else you would find. Just sayin’😉

I read the "Grapes of Wrath, it's one of my favorite novels and John Steinbeck was one of my favorite authors.
Great book! And influential
Sad too see how places like this get vandalized.
Totally agree. Why do people feel the need to do that?

Nuclear power house in glenrio, construction in 1975?
Looks completely different 1 year later...
Are they tearing down the old motel?
