    Thanks for putting us in one of your vids! Little lifelong dream of mine. Was definitley a few hairy moments...I was screaming at Choke not to charge the Jager but all i got back was "Nah pretty sure hes DC'd". Funnily enough we had a mate who had been in a 3 ship Div that had been DC'ing all day with us and was trying to fix his net when this game happened otherwise it would have been a 3 torp boat Div... Fun times indeed when the MM gives you a matchup like that.

    when I was first learning the game, I would ask my son, who got me into it, about the ships I was up against. so the first time I came across a Benham, I asked him "How many torpedoes does the Benham have?" He answered, "All of them. It has ALL the torpedoes." "Oh . . ." LOL

    At 20:45 the Vermont made the right move. He either saw or suspected that his path to the island was going to be intercepted by torps - which it was - and made the only move he could - back to port. He was always doomed after that.

    • @fendelphi
      @fendelphi 25 дней назад +4

      Sailing in a straight line towards 2 torpedo destroyers is not the "right move". If the captain had been moving away, there was a possibility that they could have won.

    • @dany1441
      @dany1441 25 дней назад +11

      @@fendelphi Watch the video again. There were 2 sets on their way to intercept him in case he was heading for the island. He would have been dead if he tried that. He did the opposite of going in a straight line. His problem was that the island was the only way he was ever going to survive, so although he managed to dodge those sets, he was always doomed after that.

    • @MrDirigible
      @MrDirigible 25 дней назад +5

      @@dany1441 thank you for saying this, I was annoyed that Jingles was criticizing the Vermont for seemingly not going behind the island when there's a literal wall of torps the Vermont would have died on rather than just getting clipped with one. The detonation was lucky as much of the Benhams' play was for how little health remained on both ships. The Vermont could have survived two more torps if the last one wasn't a detonation. I really don't think this is seal clubbing as much as the ships were in ideal circumstances but played unnecessarily risky in many instances. Choke and Stroke being on less than 100 hp could have taken a random secondary hit and died, should have let his team mate spot for him. Also the Jager being AFK was a god send otherwise this would have been a loss most likely.

    • @fendelphi
      @fendelphi 25 дней назад +3

      @@dany1441 I am not talking about heading towards the island. I am talking about moving away from the threat. If he had done a u-turn, he would have avoided the torpedoes(although he had no way of knowing where they were aimed at), and would have gained time to run the clock down.
      Timestamp 21:00
      The first set of 8 torpedoes completely missed. It then avoided the second set of 8, by turning back to port(nose in towards where the torpedoes were coming from).
      If the Vermont then had either run for cover of the island by turning starboard again, or completed the turn to port until it was heading away from the destroyers, it would have avoided any further torpedoes for the next 2 minutes of so with ease.
      Sailing in a straight line towards danger would maximized the risk with minimal reward. He is never going to catch them and get them spotted.
      Sailing towards the island would be risky, as the threat would still come closer, but would have provided cover from further torpedoes for several minutes.
      Sailing away would have been the least risk, as he would be both changing his course(in case torps were headed his way) and created distance, giving more time to react to incoming torpedoes, as well as reduce the amount that can hit him.

    • @Nighthunter6666
      @Nighthunter6666 25 дней назад +5

      @@fendelphi Good luck turning full broadside to a Benham in a slow ass ship like the Vermont. Even if your intention is to "turn away". Tell me when you succeeded. That ship can shit out torps like it could go out of fashion at any second. There's a very little time window to do any big maneuvering. Let alone space if the Benham seriously starts flooding the entire ocean. Also if you look closely the Vermont kept changing at least his course to dodge incoming torps, so it wasn't a case of "sailing in a straight line" as you claim it.
      He did make a mistake in sailing towards the DDs in the first place that's true. If he wanted to buy time, it should have been done much sooner. But for one I don't remember seeing what happened a few minutes prior in that cap, nor do I care to check. He might have a reason to sail into the cap, potentially cutting off the DDs from claiming it and then turned left instead of right at the crucial moment.

    Jingles...typhoons are bad for torp DDs with 10-12k range torps also, because you can no longer see your targets to make best use of those torps. For CAs and BBs, it effectively gives them 8k conceal...so can definitely be a positive.

    • @fendelphi
      @fendelphi 25 дней назад +1

      There are pros and cons.
      For battleships, it makes it easier for them to hide from enemy battleships and cruisers, as well as long distance torpedoes.
      On the other hand, if you do become spotted, you know that enemies are within 8km, and your low rudder response, slow turning turrets and large target profile makes it very easy to punish a surprised battleship, especially if they catch you broadside.
      Outside of a typhoon, if nothing is visible and you are still spotted, you know that a destroyer(or similar stealthy ship) is around somewhere, and you might consider doing maneuvers to avoid potential torpedoes. Much harder to do effectively if you are already within 8km.
      If a destroyer spots something within 8km, it usually has the advantage of still being unspotted itself(although radar and some Hydros might become problematic, as they know something is within 8km). They also have the maneuverability and speed to get out of those 8km range if need be(most of the time).
      So yeah, it is not as simple as "good" or "bad" for a specific type of ship, but more of a situational thing.

    Yeah, that Vermont had a very easy win actually. Hide behind the island so both nearly dead Benhams have no way to actually do anything. Since sailing around the island would probably bring them into secondary range and, well, one of the Benhams was at 89 health. Even sneezing in its general direction would've killed it. And yet... the Vermont lost. Poor decision making.

    As designed, the Benhams COULD launch sixteen torpedoes in a single massive salvo, using the torpedo gyro settings for "ahead fire": the ship would charge directly towards the target(s) with its torpedo tubes trained obliquely forward. When a solution is attained, the torpedoes would be ripple-fired, relying on the gyros in the torpedo to turn them inwards to the proper target bearing.
    In practice, this was seldom done, because the torpedoes were not very reliable with large gyro angles. Instead, torpedoes would be fired from one side, using small gyro angles, with the opposite side used as "in-tube reloads" for a second salvo. I actually have a 1930s Navy text book that explains this, and all the interwar theory of destroyer torpedo action.

    Regarding the Jaeger: while a Habsburger torpedoboat-leader from the Great War really should not be a Tier 9 in the context of the game, the idea of a Great War torpedoboat-leader remaining very dangerous in WW2 is not so crazy, provided the ship had modern weapons and engines installed sometime near the end of the 1930s. She'd not make a great fleet destroyer serving on the high seas, but as a torpedoboat focused on aggressive hit-and-run strikes in more confined waters, she'd be more dangerous than not.

    I think the Vermont player thought it wouldn't win with point with the time remaining with only 1 Cap, so he went after a second one witch cost him the game

    • @xfKYZacTri
      @xfKYZacTri 25 дней назад +1

      Actually, if I had to guess... he wasn't going for a 2nd cap. He was going for a points advantage by taking out either of the very low Benhams. Because that would've given him more than enough of a comfortable lead to just win it on time. At least, I'm guessing that was the thought process.

    The USS Benham. The IJN Kitakami with four quad torpedo launchers per side and a long reload was too out of balance to keep in the game, but an American destroyer that can put the same weight of torpedoes in the water since it has a fast reload is just fine.
