This L-1649A Starliner was being restored in Auburn Maine by Lufthansa Technik North America.
Unfortunately the project was cancelled.
The airframe was rapped in protective plastic and shipped to Germany.
There are plans to assemble the aircraft and have it become part of a Lufthansa static display accessible to the public.

Sadly, three years ago Lufthansa announced the end of its Super Star project (after spending $163M) and the aircraft is incomplete and stored in pieces. In March 2021, Lufthansa moved the main fuselage of Starliner N7316C from a warehouse in Bremen to the airport at Paderborn, Germany.
Absolutely outstanding job!! Such an incredible achievement to get this aircraft back into the air. Everyone on the team should be very proud 👍.
Ahhh, the Superconstellation... so beautiful
The "Connie" & the 1649 "Star Liner". The most beautiful prop airliners to ever grace the skies!
Best resto-mod I've seen yet! The Connie deserves just this sort of respect.
That narrator sounds like one of those 1950s narrators from all of those promotion videos
So sad to see this project wasn’t completed. It honestly breaks m pay heart. As an aviation enthusiast and aircraft mechanic by trade I wish I could volunteer my own time to help make the dream a reality. There are only two connies left flying in the world and this one is completely different. It would have been the highlight of any air show.
Rod Lewis' Connie, the former "Bataan," is about complete and ready to fly. You'll see it in the skies soon.
@@cgee2224 CONNIE s r NOT STARLINERS ..., not even Super C s r ...
This plane was being rebuilt in Auburn, Me. I was a contractor servicing the hanger. It was amazing to see this being rebuilt.
I live in Auburn. I saw this build from the outside...
@@roncarguy72 you should’ve seen it when the fire suppression failed and filled the hanger with foam.
Connie was before jet era"Queen of the Sky." It´s my favourite propeller airliner. Her father was ,as I read H.Hughest.
The bean counters have struck again with no regard as to the long term would bring with such an historic aircraft. To have spent so much time and money rebuilding this aircraft to better than new I can simply not understand what was on the minds of Lufthansa to quit on the project when it was more than 80% complete. I know that for the past couple of years they have seen some financial hardship. However, they destroyed all the records of the rebuild thus ensuring that the plane can never be brought back to flying status. It's very short sided and one which I'm sure many people will reget in the coming years
It is sad....I was in Auburn/Lewiston in Sept 1998...when Maurice ran all 4 engines of 8083H...it is really sad to see all of his efforts of saving these aircraft go right down the drain, with virtually nothing to show for it.
And sadly after 10 years in March 2018, being 97% completely remanufactured to "better than new" standards, only 7 months from flying and after monumental support & donations spending over $200 million dollars, the new Lufthansa B.O.D. lost their collective spines (along with their balls) and killed this effort so close to flying. All because of the bean counters.
@@190Mark The Corona-Crisis would have killed this project anyways, its sad nonetheless. I was quite excited to see it flying!
@@LetsFlyGuy You mean the covid fiction. Should have let British Airways take on this effort. They have a true sense of history.
@@flyingtigerline Oh dear, a covid denying twit! As for BA... Pah!
Greatest appreciation to Lufthansa for their heritage aircraft program!!! Vielen dank!!!
But I think the Fw 200 V1 was the first airliner to fly nonstop from Germany to New York, though not a scheduled or revenue flight. Still amazing at the time!
A truly remarkable project. Best wishes!
The glass cockpit in combination with such an old prop plane is somewhat satisfying and fascinating. I really really really hope to see this in Germany some day. Beautiful!
I love the triple tail fins!
Awesome Job Guys..!.👍Simply Beautiful.! ❤..Rebuilt, not forgotten....
love it. great work lufthansa! not just in a museum but real usage for future generations
Gee beautiful work you guys
Amazing. I wish to see this legendary airplane flying again.
Until a failed fire alarm test (flooded the hangar with foam) sent the whole project back to Germany. Too bad, I wanted to see her fly. Auburn ME misses Connie.
*I LOVE this! Proves that with today's modern technology, almost any airplane, locomotive, etc. can be brought back to life with the right vision, people and motivation... The British have done an amazing job bringing back rusted old steam locomotives.*
amazing !
Sorry to hear it was canceled. Probably not economical feasible.😞
Don't get excited. They shelved it in 2018 due to its massive cost. It was put in storage in 2019. Such a shame. The PR would have been fabulous. It's looking doubtful that it will ever fly again but I'm curious how far to completion they got.
Probably the single most expensive shell of an aircraft ever to be put on static display
ට
It was very sad to hear that Lufthansa quit this project that they had started with so much fanfare. Now this aircraft will never fly again because they insured by destroying all the records of the rebuild that it couldn't be made airworthy ever again
Is there an update on this rebuild?
Better than new...
Come to Vancouver or Seattle . . I'll be there.
Today all cars practically look the same and none have any character. The same for planes. They all look alike. The Connie had character. I hope this plane got into the air and is there for a long time
It didn't. They cancelled the project and broke the wing so it can never fly again
Man....that s crazy... i wish i could be in that crew....
Wow a Connie Super Sport!!! can you really get her airworthy, no wonder Ed Heineman at Douglas wet himself.
Still, a wonderful project.
Where are you guy's rebuilding this aircraft
Wonderful.... ☆☆☆☆☆
It would be nice to have kept many of the analog gauges along with some of the newer round hole digital retrofits and mods to achieve the utility/classic balance. Glass cockpits are very cold and lack character fitting such a classic.
It's been four years. Any chance of an update?
Are they selling tickets yet? I see bucket list.
So is the intention to carry paying passengers, or is it just going to be just used for historical display flights at things like airshows? Either way it's a marvelous job so far, and I'd like to see it fly in person some day. Pity they couldn't have left the analog gauges and so on in the cockpit, though...
Certainly a cut above those flying cattle cars that pass for airliners today!
Yes It will be carrying passengers superstar.lufthansa.com/en/experience.html
i think this is the most beautiful aircraft ever to fly. what i would give to take a long distance journey in one instead of a jet.(peter newbrook)
I flew on one from England to NYC. Problem is it was 1957 and I was seven months old (having been born on a USAF base hospital in Wiltshire while my father was stationed there) so I have no memory of it. All I can say is my first time in an airplane was top shelf for that era.
I had the privilege of flying in a DC3 a few times as a shuttle service but never had the privilege of flying in a Connie!
Not true HARS in Australia is flying!
When Lufthansa will overhaul a L-1049 Super Constellation too?
Alas the restoration is no more since Lufthansa dropped out of the project.
I would love to fly on a Connie again! When is it coming to Seattle?
You got a Connie at the museum of flight! Tell the museum to rebuild there's to flying status CHOP CHOP ASAP !
What's going on with this project? Anybody know? I know Kermit Weeks has a constilation and it has a Lufthansa paint job. However he says it will never fly again. Sad...
Lufthansa CEO #CarstonSpohr killed the project last year. The bird is bagged in plastic and ready for sea transport to an unknown destination and future
in Germany.
Outlaw flyer 78 Never say never it has a way of coming back and biting those who say it in the ass! Somebody in the future with the millions of dollars and dedication will put it back in flying condition!
@@turkey0165 I agree... Hate damned naysayers. Was wondering about its progress and sad to see that the project was shelved, however, that does not mean it can't be completed. Perhaps if a certain little bug eyed man were not so obsessed with his putting penis rockets into low Earth orbit he could pick up the tab? My point being any billionaire with a sense of history and love of aviation could resume, complete and maintain the project.
How’s it coming along? I hear it was given up on
You are right, she will never fly agian, after Lufthansa has spent over 140 million Euros they stopped the project. But they have plans to put her in a museum.
Probably some bean counter in accounting pulled the plug
Why was the project cancelled? If so send to Kermit Weeks in Florida USA.
Project has been canceled and the aircraft has been disassembled and moved to Germany to be finished and placed in a museum. 200 million dollars and was 80% complete.
FUCK THAT SHIT.
Does anyone have any idea what gave them that brainwave. If it was a matter of funding, Im sure had they made that known among the community, funding could have been found. They were nearly done. What a travisity. They already have one Connie preserved in a museum setting.
shit Howard Hughes poured more into his Spruce Goose and even after the government cancelled the contract he paid out his own pocket and finished it... a true aviation hero... Lufthansa sure screwed up on this one and created a HUGE PR disaster .. aviation fans will forever have a kick in the gut on this major screw up.. 200 million to scrap a project like this...
@ I agree with you. I was waiting with baited breath for them to finish. It would have been a completely new aircraft. What a waste just to save a few dollars they've destroyed what would have been an Avaition icon. Especially since they were one of the few airlines to purchase this version of the Connie.

Cool but why not keep the original analogue cockpit?
Upgrading the pilots navigation systems was needed to allow unrestricted operations of the aircraft in the modern BRNAV IFR airpace environments found around all larger airports. Sure, we could have kept it with round-dials everywhere, but that would have meant pretty much VFR-only flying, around the patch.
Too bad.... Lufthansa has shut down this project in 2018 :-(
And so did the FAA.
@@svens.5139 Really? Where did you hear that. I saw a letter from Lufthansa that was sent to someone who was disappointed that this was "canceled" and it said that they were not killing the project. They just most likely were no longer going to provide commercial flights like they originally planned.
@@AndrewP657 It was the main purpose of the project to do commercial flights.

Looks like Lufthansa also just quit supporting their Junkers Ju52. Another propliner headed to the museum.
I heard some radial engines one day and the JU52 flew past my balcony at 500 feet on approach back in 1991. I couldn't believe my eyes as it went buy.
I managed to get a flight in Nürnberg just a few weeks before its last flight. I was so happy - not knowing HOW lucky I was at that time.
Coming to xplane 11 ? :)
Oh God, I WISH!!!

I want to fly, count me in.
Sorry, the project has been abandoned:-(
OMG.....WHEN????
Unfortunately, the project is currently on hold. The superstar is currently being dismantled in Auburn and brought to Germany, after which the Lufthansa Executive Board will decide how to proceed.
I think that the project has become too expensive and will therefore probably not be completed. That's too bad.
And the ticket cost is from the '50's!!
Finish this plane please!!!!!!
Auburn Maine.
flyingAMT I've seen it multiple times, if not just from a distance. I'm from Lewiston so we drive by it somewhat often
It didn't Happen! 😭
Aaaand they snapped the wing in two on purpose. so much for that
turbofan450 You gotta be kidding .?
@@patchescessna7348 nope. Look it up
A flight-sim wet-dream n.n
the germans gave up on it; too many marks
What the fuck happened to this project?
The time you have free meals and a lot of space not really like the gail Ryanair the worst flights in the word
there is no such thing as german engineering anymore. instead of worrying about money if you want to get things done, send them to america.
Lufthansa you suck; all this way and no quitting; whats a matter, you ran out of marks?? The airplane is worthy of the restoration !! I would have put in analogue Collins FD109 F/Ds and HSIs, RMIs, maybe a TCAS no more glass...glass cockpit was a stupid idea
So with the amount of new parts, it's not exactly an old plane.......it just occupies the original space! What a load of bollocks. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
