Really diggin' this Ken and love how you stayed out of the way and allowed the legendary Joe Harley speak. So often, I've seen where the Interviewer could not resist the temptation to dominate and make the interview about themselves instead of the actual subject. Well done and great interview.
Nice to see honest, intelligent and accomplished engineers preserving our jazz history. Thanks Ken. Great and important interview. Looking forward to part 2 !!
Great video series. Joe is one of my heros since Music Matters. I actually also have a copy Of Kenny Burrell vol2 with the Warhol cover. Really can’t wait to A/B those!
Joe Harley did stellar work on the Music Matters Jazz vinyl recirds, Blue Note XRCD jazz titles and now Blue Note Tone Poets. Every release he has over seen has been pure gold. Thank you Joe for your outstanding work and attention to detail. Great interview Kevin thank you for this!
7:40 The best example of overload/clipping is Lee Morgan's solo on Moanin'. It seems to have been fixed somewhat on some releases. On BN80 it really stands out. Lee was definitely too close to the mic. At first it bothered me, but I learned to love it. Interestingly, Lee Morgan's solo on Blue Train has the same problem. Seems like he was prone to doing that.
This was great Ken....can't wait for part 2.....Joe is the man....just love his knowledge on the Blue Note Tone Poet reissues....I have bought many of them and love them...keep them coming....great one Ken !!!!Ed in New York 😎🌉
This is so interesting. Great combination of questions about the recent reissues and info on the man himself. Had no idea RVG was considered to be the mastering engineer. Wow, I'd love to be in the parallel universe where he said, "Yes!". Can't wait to see the next video. Great job Ken... "again". 😎✌️
Interesting questions, Ken! I have been wondering about some of the distortions on certain Tonepoets (e.g., Grant Green: Nigeria) and understand now how the mastering cannot fully change that after the mix. Still wondering if some are still cut too hot for light weight cartridges like my Hana SL. Thanks for the work you put into this!
Cool interview Ken✌🏻 I can recall when the MMJ series was coming to an end and many were sad that things with BN wouldnt continue. Then along came Tone Poet to save the day. Then out rolled the Classic Series. For those of us who missed the boat on the originals and even van gelder represses its been a real treat to have BN served and kept alive with really good sounding masterings and even new life dare I say. Thanks to Joe Harley, Don Was, Kevin Gray and whomever else is involved! One question: Throughout the series there have been some titles I wonder why made the cut instead of others that are perhaps higher tier. Titles such as The Rahja, The Kicker and Minor Move , for instance. Why those titles instead of some of the higher caliber/thought of titles? Not saying they are stinkers. I have them all and enjoy them all. Happy to have them. But they were titles that were passed on at the time back in the day from what I gather. Just curious as to why not higher thought of titles first? Looking forward to part 2!
I've noticed that all the titles that have come through the Tone poet series so far and the ones that are scheduled to come out, are all titles that MMJ did not reissue. I could be wrong but I think Don Was did this as a favour to Joe Harley, so that all the collectors that bought the MMJ releases early on are happy with them retaining their value. Hence why the Classic series is putting out the higher tier titles that MMJ already put out before but with cheaper packaging.....this is my theory

Tone Poet Series is undeniably the best value in vinyl today. Love it.
This was really awesome. Great hang, great conversation, great video. 👍

Thanks a lot Tony. It’s definitely not about me. It’s about Rudy and Joe and blue note.
Nice
Great stuff! Joe just seems like such a great guy. What a great time to be a jazz vinyl lover.
This was awesome. I never heard an interview with Joe before, but I could listen to him talk all day.
Nice to see honest, intelligent and accomplished engineers preserving our jazz history. Thanks Ken. Great and important interview. Looking forward to part 2 !!
Fantastic Ken! Thank you for the gift. Highly appreciated.
Great interview, Ken! Looking forward to Part 2.
FYI, at 3:15 when Harley mentions Kevin Gray, it shows a picture of Ryan Smith
I caught that also. Two of the best.
Check out Joe's work with blues singer Doug MacLeod, on AudioQuest, too.
Great video series. Joe is one of my heros since Music Matters. I actually also have a copy Of Kenny Burrell vol2 with the Warhol cover. Really can’t wait to A/B those!
Can't wait for part two. Wonderful insight and conversation, really a treat to watch!
Great Interview. Always nice to get Joe's take on these re-issues and the background.

Thanks for those examples, I was wondering where I could listen for “Rudy diving for the faders”😜
If I ever get into the repro’s I’m gonna go with tone poet

Yeah, I had never thought of Rudy in that regard either. But he did it all
Amazing interview! Thank you so much Ken and Joe!!!
Informative interview. Well done Ken.
I am urgently hitting the like button at 11:53
👌👌
Great interview, Ken!
Absolutely fascinating ! I’d really, really love some Herbie Nicholls Tone Poet releases. I think re-issue wise he’s always been under represented.
Joe Harley is The Man!

Hugely enjoyable interview...even for a psych/prog head 👊

Joe Harley plainly stated that he has no desire to redo titles that he did before. That’s a win-win for consumers.
3:17 nice "Kevin Gray" photo
A great 'at bat" guys. 💪👍
