As always Jason, you never disappoint! I’m astounded by all these grails you find and the condition they are in is just crazy! Killer Blue Notes especially that Freddie Redd!
Great pickups, Jason! I believe that Louis Smith was originally a Transition session, but the label shut down before they put it out. Alfred Lion bought their tapes and put that out as a Blue Note. This may help explain why it sounds a little different than other Blue Note sessions. I was lucky enough to grab a '72 UA copy that sounds very good and would like to pick up his later work on SteepleChase, too. -- Mike
Yes, the Record Collector in LA is an infamous place. Have not been there in many years and surprised it's still going, as the two men running the place are both older men. My best memory is having the owner grumble at me in disgust as he wanted $70 for Cecil McBee's Mutima and I talked him down to $50. "But it's Strata East" he grumbled as he cursed me under his tongue and took my money. Hence the 1.5 stars for the often horrible customer service, and the 5 stars for the proclaimed 1 million records that he told me he had.
Yup that is the place. I recall he said he owns the building so clearly a passion project for him. Same two running the place. Def a one of a kind experience! Jason
Great to hear from you on YT. Appreciate keeping in touch in DM. Great finds so far. I'll try to email you soon with an update on my collection. Love all these pick ups - esp Ike Q!
Oh Lordy. All killer no filler. I wouldn’t expect any less from you but still. Wow. Are you telling me you left Japan with only one record in hand?! I’m not sure how I would feel about that store in LA. Might leave annoyed but sounds fun to dig through. Unbelievable titles and condition on all these. You are building an archive not a collection. Peace Jason. -Kieran
Haha. Thanks Kieran. Yeah just one record from Japan. The LA was a crazy experience, I think the guy just wants to filter his clients a bit. Once he realized I was a serious buyer he lightened up and was pleasant. Jason
You can find like Quebec on Grant greens born to be blue. The two sessions blew and sentimental and born to be blue recorded may be a day apart. Also, if you like Griffin, which I’m happy to hear you might like night lady for me is best recording beautiful playing a great version of summertime also also likes it. It might as well be Spring by Ike is beautiful.
Jason damn your 2023 has started out killer . Love that Paul Chambers you found Clifford Jordan lays that foundation. Ike Quebec is an artist I don’t have in my collection I have to change that this year Blues and sentimental is a great session. Can’t forget that Eric Dolphy I’ve never seen an original your copy is a beauty . My mouth dropped when you showed Dizzy Reece and Freddie Redd man Jason is some heavy hitting Jazz congrats. @@TheJazzBasement actually i think hank mobley is soul station is a stone classic album. Just love his smooth tone. I have his album dippin which i bought online
Shades of Redd.. classic. I have classic reissue from several years ago. Great records Jason!!… Do you have any Bill Barron (tenor) on early Savoys (1960’s).. Their beautiful. Tenor Stylings of… Motivation…and a couple more.
I heard you mention the Record Exchange, that’s in my area. I’m in Baltimore Co. I stumbled upon your page. Some nice jazz there. I will have to go back and watch your other videos. Do you ever go to Arbutus?
Very nice finds. I fully agree on the quality of the Freddie Redd and Dizzy Reece sessions. Shades of Redd as far as I know hasn't been released as part of the Classic or Tone Poet series, and isn't on the schedule for this year. Music Matters Jazz has copies of the 45 available for fifty bucks as of this writing - a conspicuously good buy. It's a top session for me, too. A real gem. Cheers.
some great stuff there, especially the ike quebec and eric dolphy albums, though I've been listening to introducing johnny griffin a lot lately - its just SO good
When you started describing the low Yelp ratings & the owners curmudgeonly attitude, I knew right away you were talking about the Record Collector. I get along with him okay. When I would go there I would bring up a stack of records going from the least wanted to most. That way, when he quoted high prices on the first few & I rejected them he would come down a bit on the others.
Yup, smart move. I got along with him just fine. I think once he figured out I sorta knew a bit about jazz and specifics around what I was looking for, he was more relaxed. I would definitely go back next time I am in the area.

I pinch myself every day. I’m very lucky. Jason
Great selection, Japan has a vast selection of jazz especially from among their own. Checked out Louis Smith and love it🙏🏾🎶
That’s great! I have not delved too far into j-Jazz but certainly plan on doing so at some point. Glad you liked Louis Smith!
Omg I can’t believe how amazing your collection is.I have some good ones too but nothing like yours
Thanks! I am very lucky to have this collection for sure. Appreciate it! ~Jason

Yup I think you are correct on the Louis Smith session. I was not initially aware of that. Jason

Thank you for sharing your story around finding all these cool albums , very inspiring 👌🏻🕵🏻♂️👑 . Greetings from #Bornholm #Denmark 🇩🇰
Wonderful. I was in Denmark last summer …Copenhagen and Vejle. Beautiful country! Jason
Awesome finds! Love Ike Quebec, there is a certain earthiness to his sound. Him and Dexter Gordon have the ideal tenor tone in my eyes
Hard to argue with that! Jason

@@TheJazzBasement I’m definitely way behind on videos my pickups from January to April will be coming soon
I know that feeling man!
I love blue note jazz records. I am lucky to own a few og copies. Your finds are really great. Not cheap but worth it.
Thank you Karim! It’s a bit of work and patience, but it has paid off. ~Jason

Sweet the Freddie Redd looks brand new
It is very clean. Kinda crazy to think about . Jason

Hi Alan - sadly I do t have bay Bill Barron yet. Or any Savoys as I recall. But it’s not for a lack of looking. ~Jason

Just on my way to BWI. But I do get to Baltimore from time to time. Jason

I think I was mistaken. Shades of Redd should be a Tone Poet or Classic series. Hopefully it happens! Jason

Great finds! What's the name of the record store in LA?
The Record collector on Melrose
