    This is important information to me because I'm a "newbie" in jazz 🎷music! I have 6 jazz LPs and one cd out of about 512 LPs and 80 CDs 💿! This will guide me well! Thank you Mr Ken! 😊

    I'm glad Joe explained the MMJ vs Original sound the way he did, and that he's not trying to make them the same, he understands the difference, and they're both great. It's not a competition! It really makes sense the TP approach is to represent what's on the tape, and make deluxe packaging. They're not a nostalgic reproduction series.

      @@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 I collected a number of the Disk Union Blue Note mono series that Kevin Gray also mastered a few years ago, they went to extreme lengths to replicate all the original labels and jackets. I don't have original pressings to compare, but the mastering of the mono series is supposed to be much more like them.

    Hey Guys...great discussion! Kudos to the two of you...seeing this a little late but I have two questions.
    1) Did you ever hear Holidays for Percussion by the Manhattan Percussion Trio done by Rudy VG? Corny but Greaat!!
    2) Can you advise on Rudy's use of The Ampex suitcase amp/speaker? Saw a pic of him with one and I have one which I used at an AudioKarma meet in NJ. Mono in an open room and folks were slack jawed...ironically with a yellow rugged series Sony Sport walkman CD directly in playing classic jazz. No joke! Thank you so much!

    I've noticed that all the titles that have come through the Tone poet series so far and the ones that are scheduled to come out, are all titles that MMJ did not reissue. I could be wrong but I think Don Was did this as a favour to Joe Harley, so that all the collectors that bought the MMJ releases early on are happy with them retaining their value. Hence why the Classic series is putting out the higher tier titles that MMJ already put out before but with cheaper packaging.....this is my theory

    When he mentions “Whale oil” at 4:55, I think it’s a reference to the fact that JVC Super Vinyl (MoFi) back in the day, had whale oil in it.

    Great stuff. I always wondered how rudy approached recording the piano. I was never a fan of his piano sound compared to the natural sound of say riverside records. If you compare bill evans verve (rudy) sound to riverside (schwartau) they are quite differerent. Maybe joe has an opinion on this. Looking forward to the sonny red out of the blue album and the stanley turrentine. Would be great to have the complete riverside bill evans on tone poet (they are so expensive and hard to get) and maybe release some rare atlantic titles like lee konitz/warne marsh and charles mingus east coasting. Looking forward to part 3. Thanks Ken!!

    I fully understand Joe's reluctance to go over old titles that he has done with MM, I hope he reconsiders for no other reason that it will be a major kick up the backside for all these Discog's and Ebay flippers.

      I think he side the Classic reissues are covering MMJ. Tone Poet is unique to him, can't see the point of covering old ground.

    • @derosa1989
      @derosa1989 3 года назад +2

      The absence of TP repeating those MMJ's would be less of an issue if BN just upped the quality of those Classic series jackets, which have decent art, but lousy cardboard stock. They deserve much better, up the QC from Optimal, and improve the jackets and that series would be as good as it needs to be.

    Reminds me of the economist's joke: "Mr President, Fort Knox is empty!". "Double the guard!" . Unlike gold, one can't really run out of jazz, but the effectively Joe is among the keepers of the vault, in that he gets input on what comes out. A heavy responsibility indeed. ps Who does videos on those pressing machines?

    He does not want to do Tone Poets of the big titles because they were done before? That’s great for the folks that had been collecting forever but what about the newbies? I bought Moanin, Song for My Father and Something else. All three had crackly no fill issues. If you don’t want to do them as tone poets that is fine. I don’t need gatefolds. What I want is a quality version of my favorite albums. Optimal has lost my trust. Buying a classic series is a roll of the dice.
