- 18 years after the Northern Ireland conflict largely ended, Catholics and Protestants in Belfast remain divided by walls and fences. The Northern Irish government has proposed a plan for dismantling the barriers - although not with universal support. More Focus on Europe:www.dw.com/en/program/focus-on...
I work with a guy whos a "protestant" and an orageman and I play football with a guy whos a "catholic" and each have strong opionions on NI....neither of them are actually religious in any way whatsoever.
i wish them peace. from Republic of Ireland..
there won't be peace in this world when there's still religion in it
Arin Jäger edgy
Lmao joke, ye mean the south of Ireland, its not republic of Ireland till a UI comes
@@NavigatingTheMatrix420 The Republic of Ireland is an EU statelet.
@@NavigatingTheMatrix420 it is still a southern ireland
hope they will open eyes one day .
So how do they interact at the work place? Or the rest of Northern Ireland?
What do you mean?!
Many change their mind set when at work. Sometimes its the people who have no contact with the other comunity that are worse.
More Intigrated education is needed.
@@Andy7907 when going to work they must interact with each other. I really doubt a hospital will have 100% Catholic or protestant staff, or 100% protestant patients etc
Monster X tbh salons as u don't now the others religion and aren't sour about everyone gets along
It's very strange we don't really interact with eachother we have to watch what we say
In this day and age, I would of hoped that there would be an understanding that no matter how any of the families have arrived there, it is Irelands land, but it's also now those who were offered the opportunity whilst under British rule. I would just hope that it's as important for the children of those families to retain that history if where they came from and where they are now. Its now as much their right to stay there as the Irish themselves. So I see no reason for conflict, there is no pride in what Britain done to Ireland, but that does not mean those families who came should not feel pride in their heritage. I believe we have no reason to nit change fir each other, so having parades should be an equal respect for each other. If it means diverting curtaining routes to reduce conflict and promote cohesion,I'd be more proud of whatever community I come from seeing us making as many adjustments we need to make each other as welcome and pushing through the narrative of the future safety and community respect for each other. All communities and their heritage matter....There is no honour or pride for a victor that destroys another culture. We should expect to be better than that as evolved as we are.....
Even the Berlin Wall didnt last as long as this wall has (and counting!)
So Mail Officer has to climb wall to delivery mail
No there's gates between the shankill area (protestant loyalist) and the falls area (Catholic nationalist) so people can walk and drive through both areas of the peace line. There's other ways to get into the falls area other than these peace lines :). Most houses have those walls to the back of the house aswell
Pretty strange situation for a western europe country.
It's kids that cause the most trouble involving rock throwing over these walls. There may be some in their late teens and early 20s who are disenfranchised. Parents need to teach their kids to refrain from violence. The majority of people are moving on and trying to live in place with their neighbors.
This is like the Berlin Wall
Where's that ladys eye brows
As an American, it just amazes me that there can still be such severe conflicts over religious differences even in the Western world. Even in the U.S. we struggle with political differences, but at least we aren't erecting physical walls to divide our communities.
It’s not just religious it’s a whole mindset that’s mutually exclusive it goes way deeper than just the names
Its not religious no matter what the media says. Its territorial and nothing else

@@domhnallkelly5084 that may be whet youngsters say but the older Loyalists are hardcor
Or they can just grow out of religion and have their differences disappear.
it's not about religion , it's tribal
Sssshhhh he thinks he knows it all. Don't let him wake up
Like her eyebrows
they will never be able to take the walls down it would only cause major trouble the only way forward is a United Ireland plain and simple
keep dreaming ...
::::::::::::: ::::::::::::: I will do
@@markkenna4104 A united Ireland will not be in our lifetime, you are a very ignorant man to believe that loyalist paramilitaries will not answer in a way of violence, just have a look at what happened when the union flag was taken down off Belfast city hall. They rioted for days. Now, can you imagine taking these bigots out of the union? They would cause chaos all over by armed action, if that happens republican armed groups will retaliate under the guise of 'protecting their community' which will bring back violence possibly not on the scale it was on before but this will be a full sectarian conflict which no one wants to see!
Mark Kenna Ireland will go into deep debt if we unit them
there gonna be a british khalifat before that happens -_- (united ireland as its own independent state would be cool, tho' - but only without bloodshed, of course)
How Protestants and Catholics, two groups of people who worship the same god, same Jesus and use the same bible, don’t get on, just baffles the mind
I think the difference is small details on how they interpret The Bible.
One small disagreement, and somebody thinks it's a full campaign against them.
And then it just results in unhealthy people, going after innocent civilians.
Just because they don't belong to their social group.
-Also: Northern Ireland democratically voted to stay with Britain.
After Ireland was granted independence in 1921.
One side wants to maintain that. The other doesn't.
Nothing to do do with religion, its to do with those wanting a united Ireland and those who do not
Welcome to Berl... oops, Belfast.
Tiocfaidh ar la
Would have been cheaper and way easier to give the are to Ireland. Britain is unnecessary stubborn to keep the area. It is even geographically away from other parts of the country. No need to be colonialist annymore.
@Clive Warren No people would be happy that the very artificial colonisation would end. Especially now after Brexit as Britain is becoming less and less great..

Brexit will be benefitting it
You may be the German wave keep out of our territory I think you need to conserve your energy for Poland and what Putin is up to at the moment
There used to be a good wall in Berlin, and that coming down was a crime against humanity.
seriously?
