I think Kim and her family are stuck in this bubble of privilege and they are so self-absorbed that they loose sight of the bigger narrative, of the reality. They think what happens in their lives is something other people also have. Since it was relatively easy for them to be successful, she thinks others can too easily ignoring factors like resources, connections etc. I genuinely don't think they mean harm, they're just really ignorant and someone needs to educate them. I went to a private school in Australia, and there was tonnes of Kims there, but our teachers took the initiative to open their eyes on the reality and I'm proud to say many of my classmates are fully aware of their privilege now and if you meet them on the street, you wouldn't realise they were from a wealthy upbringing. It's a shame no one taught these people the same thing.
Unfortunately while she may not mean any harm, she is also not interested in being educated. Often, not always but often, when people of her age with her resources who dont take the initiative to educate themselves it's because they are not interested in the discomfort it would bring. Easier to just live in your bubble and tell yourself you are not harming anyone. Case in point anytime anyone has attempted to "educate" Kim, it's become clear very quickly that her interest in the topic only goes as far as how it can benefit her. The kimono controversy is just one example of how she decided to use people's hurt as a way to drive her profits.
What did the teacher do to teach them about their privilege? I really, genuinely want to know.

Pretty privilege is a thing, I got a nose job which dramatically improved my appearance and also how people treated me. I was treated a lot better in every area in my life. It’s actually quite sad how looks do really matter. And I was privileged enough to have the finances to improve that.

i've been working a job since i was 16 and i'm 21 now... and honestly kim's right. i don't want to work.. i'm tiredt from working labor intensive jobs with pay that is less than i deserve. i think kim misinterprets her having a FULL schedule as being a hard worker. in reality her schedule consists of working out, taking promo pictures, watching her kids, and eating dinner that is made by a grade A chef.
well she and the 1 percent need a working class that is willing to be indentured servants. To maintain their wealth they need low wage employees.

One thing to consider with all those drop-out-of-college entrepreneurs is that they were wealthy even before becoming entrepreneurs. Dropping out of college for them and failing, would not carry the same weight as the average college dropout. Unfortunately it is a great sales pitch for all the online gurus.

You are far politer than I would be when describing this family's ignorance regarding hard work. I'm a nurse. The hardest working people I have ever met, have been single mums, trying to keep a roof over their kids heads, food in their bellies & clean school uniforms for them. They often went without food or new clothing themselves & were considered to be living under the poverty line. THAT is really hard work.
I want to share a different perspective.
People make generalization about the world around them based on their smaller environments and social groups that they're exposed to an are a part of. In my opinion, Kim wasn't talking to the average working class woman, telling her to get her butt up an work because no one wants to work. Because Kim doesn't know a working class woman. She knows the people around her and in her social circle.
In Kim's social circle, she's surrounded by people who are in the 1%. And when she said some people don't want to work, I feel like she was talking about people like Kourtney, Larsa, Rob etc.- who notoriously just chill and don't like working. I think that is what Kim's referring to. Because Kim has no exposure to the average person, so I don't think she was making a comment about the average person. She was commenting on the behaviours of those around her. And since she's surrounded by influencers and nepotism kids, I'm sure it's common that people don't want to work, they just want to live off their family's wealth and be influencers.
Whereas Kim has been born into a life of abundance and wealth- but she did start as Paris' closet organizer, she had a little boutique with her sisters, and is now studying law. So based on her peer group of people who have had even more wealth and have done less, I'm sure she believes that people don't want to work because that is the disposition that she observes in her social circles.

I find it suspicious how this happened right before they announced their show. It's not whether she actually believes what she said or not. It's what is controversial. All controversy is good controversy if they get everyones attention to their show. Their business model is peak "Attention Economy".

@@DXR-kb4xu I don't think it's that people don't like success (I'd actually argue the opposite), but rather they don't like being shamed for being average. Being average may not be something worthy of praise, but it isn't something to be ridiculed about either. I agree that noone's forcing people to take on risky careers, but I do believe as a young person there is a sort of pressure nowadays to be successful and make lots of money. Like you said, 'the majority aren't good enough', and if that's the case why shame them for that?

Thank you for making this video. It’s such a relief to hear about the survivorship bias. I definitely have been working hard since I was 8. Supported my family until I was 26 years old, took care of my disabled mom, raised my younger brother,worked two full-time jobs, graduated with my High-School Diploma after homeschooling myself. Got myself into college ( we were homeless a lot because my mom was an addict and lots of other troubling things as well).
So! You can be better then your upbringing. I’m going back to school now. I’m going back to study Law because I loved it for 10 years when I was interning at a Law Firm. I had to have help from amazingly kind and supportive people. I wouldn’t have gotten this far if it wasn’t for people that helped me along the way.
So hearing a video like this makes me feel relieved to have the illusion broken. It’s so incredibly frustrating that stories or people like this are hyper-focused and glamorized.
I wish we could have shows that talk about other people who have overcome disabilities, homelessness, addictions, abusive families etc.

THIS. That sort of "just work hard, it's all on you" is obvious bs. We don't each live on a deserted island. Everyone needs help from someone else at some point, whether that's Kim relying on her wealthy family and their connections or broke me getting a better job and education through old school acquaintances (srsly there are so many jobs out there that you'd never even find to apply for unless you know someone who works there). I think it's really toxic and damaging to tell people they only have themselves to blame and rely on, if you believe this you're less likely to actually ask someone for help and it's setting yourself up for failure.
I've noticed this hesitation to ask for help in myself and it's really just societal brainwashing. In reality, from middle class and up, society, class, success work mostly through nepotism. For any upward mobility, you need to at least befriend the right people, if you aren't already married or related to them *and then* not be dumb or unlucky and mess up (you don't get second or third chances when you don't have wealthy relatives).

I dont think they're delusional, they just don't care who the steelroll along the way to get views and ratings. They've done that so much, it comes naturally to them. That's why they are the extremely few celebrity who've survived from the early 2000s. They've survived better than Drake, Beyonce, Rihanna, Justin Bieber. Them, Arianna, Nicki, etc are someone of the very few who stayed alive...because all the need are brand deals, controversy, and an enhanced apperance to keep them alfloat. And we keep falling for it.

I don’t like the family, but you can’t deny they were clever enough to exploit the internet and society mindset to get rich and famous. I I admire them for that. i agree with everything BUT that kim had plastic surgery to erase her ethnic features. also I must add that this presentation reminds me of when people encounter a homeless person and tell them to "get a job already" under their breath!! have they ever stopped to think how impossible this is?? there are people out there dealing with a myriad of problems, never mind a poverty-stricken soul all alone attempting to survive. think depression, mental health, filthiness, no permanent address, no resume, no proper clothing, no I.d, etc., etc. and of course pretty privilege plays a role. it's much easier for a person blessed with looks (and thus, more confidence) is able to find work easier than their not-so-blessed counterpart. they are also more apt to be considered for promotions as they are seen as more competent. let's face it: life is brutally unfair!!

Yes and no, getting a job while homeless is not impossible, there are plenty of programs that were made for just this(you’d be mind blown), and you find out about them at homeless shelters, soup kitchens, etc. A lot of the homeless people I knew(I was homeless) just didn’t want to work, or go the extra mile to work(being drug and alcohol free, there’s also programs for this too).

I think many of the people who decide not to go to college aren’t really seeking success and aren’t shooting very high. They are more likely the ones happy with a standard cashier job or working at a bakery.
So the fact that the average amount of money made from people who don’t go to college is lower compared to those who do, doesn’t necessarily mean that when both individuals actually go for a higher amount of success, the ones who didn’t go to college are much less likely to achieve it.

I think that what Kim said makes sense in HER reality, we as a society have been so exposed to lives of celebrities and really wealthy people we forget that without paparazzi or the internet, we would never know how that part of society lives. Think hundreds of years ago, do you think in a kingdom the general population understood or even knew what life was like in the castle? They lived their entire lives not knowing what it meant to be rich and privileged. What Kim said makes total sense in her reality, like there was an episode of their reality show where Kylie first bought her house and everyone was making snide remarks towards her cause she did not know how to do even the basic stuff, in the mind of the older sisters she is privileged and never "worked hard like they did". It's simply about different perspectives. They live a life most of us wouldn't even know was possible without the media and we have to be mindful of that. I dont know man. There are plenty of attractive women (and men), who wll never be even close to what this family managed to do for themselfs. Attractive people from rich families and connections and all that. There must be some method to the madness on why young girls and women decided that Kim and her kin are the best ones to follow, look like, emulate. Plenty of other women with better genetics and you know, actual talents are in the dust far behind the Kardashians.

And still, Kim is in the stratosphere in comparison to them. Those privilages are not unique for that family. So you cant just explain the success with "they are pretty and connected". Her intentionally leaked tape put the family on the map, let's be honest and countless morally questionable acts elevated them to fame. The whole family's actions just radiate a total lack of integrity. Many of us would not want to degrade ourselves to that level in order to be wealthy. Some things just aren't worth it imo.
It’s called luck. They launched a reality show which happened to get popular and capitalised on that. But they only got the show in the first place because her father was well known and her social climbing to Paris Hilton paid off.

the use survivor bias based on planes i would say was somewhat wrong since the survivor planes were hit to some extent and would have fully been taken down if hit on more critical areas and therefore were good examples to work on, so not completely accurate on that, where the planes were shot were lowly protected areas as your diagram shows, the wings where if the wings had completely disintegrated, they would take down the plane, where as the other areas untouched like the engines or the nose/ cockpit usually are more protected from factory as well as not fully applicable for more armour as it would make it harder for the engines to be serviced and or the pilots to function in the cockpit and so on. in terms of the rest of the video its acceptable in terms of the metaphor.

I’m not a Kim Kardashian fan, but I am a fan of Qoves. With that being said, I respectfully disagree with this take. I’d like to provide my own, but I’m just a stranger on the internet, so take my opinion for what it’s worth…
(*My commentary is strictly on the word for word content of Kim’s message, being her idea of hard work, rather than peripheral details about her that would otherwise skew the way the message is interpreted)
Kim said at the start of her message that she has advice for “business women.” Right off the bat she is narrowing the target audience from being the general public to women, specifically women who are already in entrepreneurship who want to advance their careers. This is an important distinction, since I’ve seen many comments taking her message as being intended for low wage earners who want to make it as business people. The message is not meant for them, if we are strictly speaking about the word for word content of her message. I’m sure virtually everyone-on some level of consciousness-understand that people in such situations can work as hard as they want and still get no where. I would be on everyone’s side if she said “I have success advice for people [in general]” as opposed to business women who already have some degree of success who want to acquire more.
I 100% agree with Qove’s take on survivorship bias and entrepreneurship, and in fact I often talk about that to people who watch RUclips videos on how to be the next Elon Musk. However, as far as I’ve heard (please feel free to leave a comment if you think I missed something important), Kim didn’t make any promises that if you simply work hard you will achieve the same caliber of success. If she were saying that, then I’d agree that a reminder of survivorship bias is warranted. However, because she didn’t, her message can be taken as a reminder to always work hard and find a good environment that reinforces what you are trying to achieve. While you may never achieve the same degree of success as famous entrepreneurs who had many headstarts in life, you can certainly get much farther than where you are now if you aren’t already working hard ( not just hard working in general, but working hard at the things that have the most potential. 60 hours a week of hard work at McDonalds is not the same as 60 hours a week studying at school for those who want a second chance at life. Some people are in a more favorable position to do that others, but that doesn’t mean you should play your hand to the best of its potential. Literally everyone has their own privileges, whether they realize it or not. Do what you haven’t don’t already if you are able).
I do agree with Kim that people are less inclined to work hard nowadays, but this not necessarily my subjective opinion. I saw a tweet from someone responding to Kim’s message saying “Read the room Kim: we are just coming out of a pandemic.” Implicit in that comment is the idea that hard work stops just because there is a pandemic, which obviously isn’t true. More Milenials and Gen Z members are adopting more of a lax airtime towards work (I can cite my sources if anyone is interested). Prior to the 1960s, America’s civic culture was one of industriousness. There was a famous saying floating around at the time that said “Europeans work to live while Americans live to work.” China has even banned a TikTok trend called ____ (can’t remember the name), where the premise was that your primary life purpose is one of pleasure, and since hard work isn’t necessarily pleasurable, it should be avoided where possible. That’s a pretty extreme example, but not all that far from what most young people are experiencing. When social media shows you millions of highly successful people at such a young age, you may feel demoralized by thinking “the system is rigged against me, why should I even try.” While you may never achieve the same success as someone else, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do the absolute best you can-that’s the message I think Kim was trying to impart.
I do acknowledge that there are some people who are more vulnerable to thinking that arbitrary “hard work” is all it takes. However, I’d like to recall some LinkedIn research that said one of the most used words on their site was “strategizer/strategizing” but words like “Execute/Executer/Executing” were not even in the top 100. Everyone has dreams, and most people can think of a plan, but it’s also about following that plan to its logical conclusion: following that plan, running into failures, having a willingness to go back to the drawing board, persist, and try again. I do think that there is sort of a vacuum of understanding in that regard, which is also why I think the Self-Help industry has boomed as much as it did. People are hungry to feel invigorated for something. One thing I do support are public figures-since they have a special place in the culture and should use it to promulgate standards-keeping virtues like hard work in the atmosphere. I also recognize though that most of them do it for virtue signaling reasons and many don’t think what they say though to it’s logical conclusion.
I think Kim is a terrible role model for young people, but I don’t support rallying against people of privilege just because they open their mouths. “Work hard” coming from Kim, or coming from your parents or friends, mean the same thing (strictly in terms of semantics). I don’t think anyone has forgotten that hard work is very important, but I do think that-regardless of who it’s coming from in SOME cases, this being one of them-public figures and role models have implicit obligation to promote admirable standards (whether they are geneuine or not with their intentions, as long as it is in the atmosphere). I’d rather a young business women who is listening to Kim think to themselves “yeah, I’ll work even harder” than think “Coming from you, that means nothing because of your privilege. Therefore, I shouldn’t try since I don’t have that same privilege.”
Anyways, this is my take. I am more than open to seeing an opposing opinion. As a reminder, I don’t follow the Kardashian family like that, so I understand that their words may hit differently for me than those who know them and their history. With that being said though, I do think people misconstrued what she was saying and used it as another opportunity to go on a crusade against privileged members of society, which seems to be a common thing nowadays.
I think as an entrepreneur giving advice to other entrepreneurs, her advice was lazy and it advice that her family has not followed.
It’s documented that they have stolen products from other entities for their own ventures, they have underpaid their staff, and they have delegated the types of tasks/life responsibilities that most women in business are unable to delegate.
Someone mentioned in another comment that her frame of reference for the comment was probably moreso in regards to the other 1%ers who were born into money and don’t want to work, which I’m more apt to believe.
I actually think that millennials and genz are working earlier than before and quite hard due to the internet and circumstances of the time. Millennials entered the workforce during a recession, were undercut in their pay, and entered a workforce where the technology allowed people to be “online and accessible” much more than precious generations, and this was an acceptable workplace practice. Many are working several jobs and gigs and side hustles to make ends meet. Gen z, who grew up on the internet, are now working on the internet and are starting very young. Parents are creating content with their children, and these children are working at a very young age, even society doesn’t want recognize their labor.
I think the issue isn’t a lack of hard work. It’s the fact that wages are stagnant and these generations have a significantly lower purchasing power than then the previous generations. So they’re working hard, but are unable to consume and acquire the same level of goods, are less likely to acquire property, are spending more money for education, etc.
The lying flat movement that your referring to is in protest of the 996 corporate standard (9am - 9pm, 6 days a week) in China. At some point in a society, we have to discern between what is hard work and what is exploitation. And that’s the larger conversation, rather than “do people want to work.”
