Very nice engineering on that part. I do have a concern though. Maybe you can shed some light on this or ask the engineer: How safe is it to transfer 100% of the shock from changing gears to the syncros and gears themselves?
The WRX 6 speed isn’t the strongest transmission to begin with, especially the syncros. On the OEM setup, it’s not that Subaru cheaped out on components. They engineered the shift bushing, shift cable, plastic/composite components of the shifter mechanism, and the transmission mounts to work together as an ecosystem that absorbs shock when shifting and protect the transmission internal components.
This Dark Matter shifter eliminates all but the transmission mounts, which will surely be replaced with harder material by folks spending $900 on a WRX shifter. Considering the WRX 6-speed has practically zero aftermarket strengthening options, I would really worry about eliminating any and all components with shock absorption properties.
I bring this up because I’ve seen this situation on other vehicles. There has to be something in the system to absorb abuse from the driver, and you never want that part to be the transmission itself, especially in a car with no realistic “built transmission” options.

So I had a quick discussion with the guys at DarkMatterX about this before responding in order to confirm what I was thinking..
In terms of comparing possible damage to the transmission, specifically the synchros, there really isn't any difference between this shifter and the oem. Damage to synchros and gears obviously comes from mis-shifts, money-shifts, etc.. but it can also come from "over-selection" (aka resting your weight on the shift knob and holding the shifter in gear). It can also come from slamming the gears too hard which could bind up the teeth on the synchros.
Regardless of which cause of damage you're talking about, it all comes down to the driver. From normal driving, and accurate shifting, there isn't any difference of damage to any part of the transmission with the DM-1 or DM-2.
I'd venture to say that it's even less likely to damage the transmission with the DM-2 because it's way easier and smooth to push into each gear, which means you can push the shift knob with less force. For the forks that select the gears by sliding over the synchros, if you're able to do that motion using less physical input relative to the oem shifter, it could definitely reduce the likelihood of damaging a synchro and the gears themselves. But again, it all comes down to the driver and how they shift.

If money wasn't a concern, buy this and if the stock transmission goes boom, do a STi transmission swap.

I'll be honest, the install for the DM2 is definitely a little more intensive than the short throw, but atleast it's a full replacement. The shift feel of the DM2 is also 10x better than any short throw kit on the market.

Not to be a buzz kill, but the shifter is going on a glass trans. At that price point if your planing on making power which is much easier on the FA24 then EJ's in the past. Save for an STI trans without the cable crap from the factory that can handle twice the power. When you blow your trans and clutch like I have you will feel stupid for spending on shifters that won't swap over.

I noticed that you are using the OEM shift plate @ 17:30, it would be interesting to continue a review of this shifter with a modified shift plate from COBB or Billetworkz etc to see the effects of combining this unit with other high quality drive-train modifications.

PSA: STI swaps aren’t much more than this!! Why would anyone spend 1400 on a SHIFTER for a glass split case… get a short throw n bushings and call it a day.. if one’s really trying to piss away 1400 on one of these split cases, get a carbon drive shaft, at least you gain a little power and smoothen out your acceleration..
