It's about time you did the History of the Mandarin. I was a kid when I saw the Mandarin for the first time in the Iron Man Armored Adventures series
That version of him is still my favorite design to date.
the first intro of the mandarin to me was iron man tas
Sammeeeeeee
Me too. I loved that series and I think it has my favourite interpretation of the Mandarin
Same, great times
My favourite version will always be the armoured adventures. Something about the dynamic of the character as they hunt the rings and after Tony find out who the mandarin is led to some of the best episodes
That show is so stupid.
The moment i saw mandarin in the iron man movie, i was like, seriously?
What do you think Iron Man 3 would have been like if we saw the real Mandarin in that movie? That was really shocking to see the Mandarin being a fake in that movie.
Nobody cares anymore
"Subverting muh expectations."
My idea is like this, in Iron Man 2, we see the fake Mandarin manipulating Whiplash into killing Tony Stark. It failed, so in Iron Man 3, we get to see the introduction of Justin Hammer, but this time around, JH answers to the real Mandarin instead of the fake one. He believes they're in a partnership, but in reality, just like Whiplash and the fake one, they're all just manipulated by the real Mandarin to do his bidding. I then imagine a funny scene where JH goes to the real Mandarin's HQ and is greeted by the fake one, but he knows all along who's who so he just mocks the fake one for his failure and demands an audience with the real one, which then proceeds to the revelation. If not that, it's JH that visits the fake one in jail, stating that the real Mandarin is about to put him out of commission for his failure.
It would've been nice as well to see an Easter egg, where the real Mandarin calls his son (now we know as Shang-chi), asking him how his training is progressing, and expressing the idea that if Justin Hammer fails as well, then it's Shang-chi who will kill Tony. Shang-chi ultimately decides to defect, which foreshadows the events in the Shang-chi film, so Mandarin eventually decides to confront Tony which leads to a showdown.
The man issue with that twist was the replacement villain was pretty lame. As for the twist its self... eh. It's funny, sure, and surprising, but that doesn't make it a good twist, and it is a pretty big shame not to see Iron Man go up against his archenemy.
If that happened first of all let's keep tony lau as the mandarin.
Second i want the maklun ship crashing on earth and he using that tech for the rings and create ultimo and the forbidden valley.
Third for make the plot work would be nice if after avengers 1 the mandarin turns out his wife dide during the battle of new york (what if she was inside the building that colpased when iron was fight a leviathan and blames iron man), so he swears revenge.
Four i want h mandarin using fin fang foom at the final battle against iron man, let's him him an alien as in the comics
The mardarin is such an underrated villain
not his original version, which is pretty fucking racist lmao
@@bennett4789 Fu Manchu is an entirely different character than the Mandarin- that's why the MCU changed it!
@@bennett4789
His outfit was the only thing that was offensive.
The rest was pretty based.
Honestly before Shang Chi I would have said he was overrated. They actually gave him a character in that movie and made him interesting. Before then he had the cool rings and the rest of him was basically yellow peril (Not as bad as Fu Manchu but still not good). I never understood why so many fans made him there ride or die character.
@@bennett4789 Also this is Marvel. The same company who race swapped the Ancient One's race just to not offend the Chinese government which is pretty racist.
My favourite design for the Mandarin definitely came from the Iron Man armored Adventures cartoon as he looked Badass with that black ancient Chinese Warrior armour am I also quite liked how they were two people who used the identity in that show one of them was an old man who was the descendant of Genghis Khan like in the comics but then the second Mandarin in the show was his stepson Gene Kahn who was actually more of an anti-hero than his step-father
I’ll be surprised if I actually ever get a better build up and pay off for the Mandarin than that. Not to mention I’m a sucker for ninja armor
Only real variant fans will remember this was called History of The Mardarin

Noti gang ✊😎
It still says History of the Mandarin on my end. 🤔
Just got back from Shang-Chi. They finally did the character justice. Although we didn’t see him and Iron Man fight on the big screen, but we could see them fight in an episode of “What If…?”
💯
I agree. I like the changes they made and I liked him as a villain overall. I would love if him and Iron Man fought on an upcoming episode of What If!
What are you talking about litteraly his whole character was changed. Not the same powers. Not the same motivation. Not the right character. Litteraly nothing in common.
@@paulakroy2635 right.
Did the character justice? They did it better than the character himself was in the comics. He in fact barely resembles the comic character and is all the better for it. The only thing he has in common with the comic is that he is a warlord with 10 powerful rings. Otherwise Shang Chi's Mandarin has as much in common with the comics as Iron Man 3's Mandarin does.
I grew up with the 90s Ironman cartoon. Ever since the first Ironman movie I was waiting for the Mandarin to show his face. Even at the end of Ironman 3 where the real mandarin is pissed at the actor, I was hopefully and excited to finally see one of my favorite Marvel villains.
Just saw Shang Chi today. I did not know anything about the movie going in so I felt blind sided that they reinvented the Mardarin and made fun of the name basically insulting the original version.
Kinda hurt the movie in my opinion.
Bit of a departure, but I’m happy to see a history of margarine.
Freudian slip
Mandarin*
The source material was, to put it mildly, fucking racist & stereotypical
@@noahcline7284 Jungian strategy
@@AifDaimon it's always a bit sketchy... Looking back on old (especially American made) works about various Asian folk... Both for animation and comics
😂😂 I can’t believe it’s not 🧈!!
basically mcu mandarin is fusion of the mandarin and shang-chi's father in the comics and the 5 weapons society seems to be replaced with this 10 rings orginization
@10:05 I like that art style too, reminds me of the '90s X-men cartoon. Also the design of the Mandarin @10:50 is the coolest yet. It's modern yet still holds onto his ancient roots. Makes him look like a badass. I'm glad they were able to blend the Mandarin and Shang-Chi's origins together and make something new yet familiar. Wouldn't be surprised if the Hand and Daredevil as well as The Iron Fist all get blended into that story as well in the future. Seems like the groundwork is already laid out.
I am so glad that you did this origin and history. This video had to be made.
One of the coolest villains! I always wanted those rings!
What do you prefer the comic rings or the MCU's armbands?
The comic rings of course!
@@trueblue6201 leave armbands to Shang-Chi, rings is real threat of Mandarin
One of my favorite comics as a kid was when the Wolverine and Psylocke fought the Mandarin. It was epic and at the end of the comic Wolverine threatens him with the famous "Dance with the Devil in the pale moon light" line from the 80's Batman movie. It was awesome.
I actually really like the Mandarin version that’s in the TV show Iron Man Armored Adventures. Always thought he was really cool with his own custom armor
Me to mandarin version in iron man armored adventure was op with ten ring like infinity stone
I now give you the historys of the Mandarins;
Mandarins were introduced into the United States in the 1840s by the Italian consul in New Orleans. From New Orleans, the mandarin spread to Florida and California. You might be familiar with CUTIES where in grown in sunny San Joaquin Valley in California they are grown. if you want so recommendations on what and where to eat them they’re good for breakfast and anything that requires oranges as in ingredients for for a sweeter taste.
The Mandarin has always been one of my favorite characters in the Marvel Universe. He's come into conflict with Iron Man on More than One Occasion.
Do you mind if I ask why he is one of your favourites? I never quite got the appeal of the character (before Iron Man 3 and Shang Chi) as I was relatively unimpressed by him in the cartoons and comics. Can you explain what I am missing please?
It will be so awesome when they finally make a movie with him in it.
Finally.
Informative video about a comic book character without using the word "problematic."
Based.
😎
SHANG CHI and the legend of the ten bracelets lmao
The Mandarin was portrayed fantastically in both Iron Man: The Animated Series & Iron Man: Armoured Adventures. Both rock for different reasons. So while we may never see the live-action confrontation between Iron Man and The Mandarin, we've still got the Animated Shows.
The Mandarin in Shang Chi is amazing, only complain is that his color scheme is blue instead of green
It was definitely odd to not have him wear anything green.
@@trueblue6201 he did wear green briefly when he had the long hair in the flashback
No what I wanted was Mandarin having a green aura when he wields the ten rings instead of blue, I like blue but I don't think it fits Mandarin
Shang Chi's Gold Vs Winwu's Green would have looked so good
I wonder if any Chinese comics have a villain named The English.
seems odd he didn't mention his modern origin, since i recall he normally did that for these episodes
You mean the one from where he tries to get a film director to tell his story?
Can’t wait to see the movie tomorrow.

Finally someone admits that the Mandarin is Marvel version of DC comics Ra'shal'ghul'.
Seeing as how the Mandarin debuted first, it would be the other way around. Mandarin first appearance 1964. Ra’s Al Ghul first appearance 1971. Are you admitting you don’t know what you’re talking about?
@@necessaryeverett I didn't know that, but thanks for the info.
@@necessaryeverett Ra’s is the better, more notable character idiot.
They're based around Fu Manchu, you can see it in Ra's design. Wenwu was Manchu till Marvel lost the rights
@@necessaryeverett well damn
I remember being a little girl and watching the Iron Man animated TV show in the '90's. The Mandarin was without a doubt, one of the best villain of the show! The writers of Iron Man 3 disappointed a lot of fans. Hopefully, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Rings will finally give us a villain that lives up to the name of The Mardain.

Comic book Mandarin was just so much better. The MCU did the Mandarin what, like 3 times? They never hit the mark once. I agree with the real Mandarin vs Iron Man fight being a HUGE missed opportunity.
FORTUNATELY WE HAVE ARMORED ADVENTURES' ONE, THAT WAS THE DEFINITVE ADAPTATION OF MANDARIN
Shang-Chi release day!🥳🎉 I can't wait for it to come out on Disney+
I think they should've done so much better with his suit! His suit from Iron man armored adventures cartoon is really cool .
Yeaah it was like some Dark Lord armor real sick concept. Doom and Magneto had the BEST concepts on that show same with Ghost and Whiplash too! Everyones concept in that show was top notch!
Sadly that show didn’t continue 😞
Yeah!
The way they made the rings into a treasure hunt and actually utilized the different powers was a lot more fun too!
You saying villainy 101 made me think of a cool idea of like who has the dopest flying or even not flying bases or star ships or whatever. I guess either hero or villain doesn't matter. It'd be cool seeing a collab of who got the best fortress or like evil doomsday crafts. ALSO which characters have the best chi related powers. Since Mandarin is a chi user I was curious who else with chi could like go head to head and who would win?
You didn't put the Knaufs Mandarin story on your list of recomendeds????? The Knaufs Mandarin story is easily the greatest Mandarin story ever.
Who would win? The Mardarin OR The Mardalorian? (Oh they fixed it!) “Razz Al Ghoul?”
Great movie, loved the fight scenes, they had way more unique fight locations this time.
The original story in the Shang chi Marvel comics was very different. In the comic books his father was Fu Man Chu. The famous villain by Roemer.
To know that you are superior-- in mind, in body, in spirit. That is everything! To know that power is your birthright-- to know what untold thousands exist on this world for no reason but to serve you-- to channel their powers through your empire, be it of land or of business-- channeling it upward to fuel you, to fuel your glory!
-the mandarin
The movie was a blast. If you enjoy Kung Fu movies by Jackie Can or other Hong Kong actors, you will definitely enjoy this movie. Shang-Chi's father (Mandarin) is one of the most relatable and tragic villain by Marvel to date.
History of the "Mardarin" lol
It's funny cause "marde" is a regional deformation of the French word "merde" which means shit.
Sees spelling: ah Merde!
Can you do an episode where you and your team talk about your collections? Like what and how you collect? I’m very interested in knowing
I am actually quite pleased that the Mandarin has been made a Shang Chi villain instead of Iron Man main villain. It never really made sense to me why a guy with magical rings and ties to alien dragons is Iron Man greatest foe when Tony Stark is all about science and business down to Earth. They just sit on two different spectrums.
Honestly, that's what I enjoyed about their rivalry. The Contrast between Stark's earthly technology and the Mandarin's Alien tech that boarders on mysticism creates a pretty great Dichotomy that makes it unique. (it's the same reason why I enjoy Superman and Lex Luthor's rivalry.) Though I have no issue with Shang Chi fighting him as well since I liked the backstory.
@@ironphantom4912 Yeah I agree that contrasts make for very good stories but for me the contrast in this case is just too big and it becomes convoluted.

Love your fantastic four shirt, my favorite marvel characters.
What would have happened if we saw Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark Iron Man fighting against Tony Leung as the real Mandarin in the MCU and who would win between them?
In the comics they are arch enemies and in of of their stories they actually have to put aside their rivalry and combine powers to fight off an invasion together.
Guess we'll never see that on the big screen. They killed off such a interesting character. Tony Leung nailed his character.
IRON MAN GOT A HALF CHUB AT 4:18

Who knew Mardarin is the real antagonist of Shang-Chi
Found this character called Rocket Racer in one of my dads old web of Spider-Man comics from the eighties. You should do a history of video for him. I would like to know more
Rocket Racer appeared in the 1994 Spider-Man series Season 3 Episode 5 Rocket Racer if you want to give that a watch.

It could be a possible What-if episode I would watch
kun Don't bet on it. They can't even get Downey Jr. to do them. I doubt they will get Leung.
Apart from the Ten Rings, what do you think makes the Mandarin the best villain for Iron Man? What would happen if he fought against Technovore? Can you do history of Technovore?
I have been wondering that myself. Especially as I recall Obadiah Stane and Justin Hammer are the ones on the comics who broke Iron Man not the Mandarin. I always felt they were more appropriate to label his arch nemesis even if Stane died decades ago in the comics.
I have the same comic book a awesome read
David Michelinie once said that Doctor Doom works better as the archenemy to Iron Man and reading those meet-ups, he's right. Doom really comes off as all of Tony's worst traits but cranked up to 11 (authoritative, arrogant, and egocentric). The only way for the Mandarin to work would be to make him as much like Doctor Doom as possible: The totalitarian monarch of his own nation that he rules with an iron fist that plays a key role in world affairs. I'd pick Madripoor (Asian, crime-ridden, huge trading hub).
2:50 is when it really starts.. you're welcome
Just been to see it. Good timing!
Mandarin is a beast. The rings are like the Infinity stones
You should do history of Darkhawk
Can you do history of Alfred Pennyworth, Batwing, Flame Bird, Batwoman, Azrael, Signal(Duke Thomas), Bluebird, Stephanie Brown and Carrie Kelly?

Perfectly timed.
What a wasted opportunity. They should have had him go up against iron man when they had the chance.
Did Tony Leung nail it with the role of the real Mandarin in the MCU? I can't wait to check out the movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
He’s absolutely fantastic though he is also done differently compared to his comic counterpart but in a good way. And the rings themselves are pretty fucking awesome and are honestly better than the comic version.
Yes he did!
He didn't really feel like a villain despite conquering everything he came across

MANDARIN 😎
Uncanny Xmen 256 is one of the best comics showing off Mandarins hand to hand combat skills
And this is why they shouldn't have killed Iron Man. He never faced his archnemesis. Also, with the Fantastic 4 and other characters on the way, it is a shame that Iron Man and Captain America will never interact with them. So many missed opportunities were missed and will be missed.
The MCU is legendary but a hero not facing his archnemesis is just too big of an oversight to be forgiven.

Shang-Chi had a great villain... but he was not the Manderine. Totally different story. Wasn't even 10 rings. They were bracelets. They didn't have different powers either. Loved the story they came up with the villain but it would have been better if they just gave this villain a different name
