About 28 years ago I was 4 my pap and I sat down at his table with a clock display like this and he said let’s see what makes this work. We took it apart and found out what made it “Tick” And I remember it opening up a whole world of ideas that you can fix things on your own. I may not of gotten a few RC cars back together along the way, but I think I would of made him proud if he was still here. Thanks for making me think of him when this came up on my news feed today!!

You'd never want to minimize the amount of parts, if anything, you ADD complexity and proprietary parts to make sure they can't fix it themselves easily.

@@KangJangkrik prototype is currently sitting disassembled in my basement but hopefully soon I’ll get it done- main difference is mine has no stepper motor as it’s got a gear reduction hand crank instead for mine. This is a good design and I really realized where I was over complicating mine from it.
This would be awesome for a flip book type animation. Should try it if that's up your alley of abilities, I'm not very good at dissecting movements in a fluid enough way for those animations.

Hey Ian...its Ian. Parents used to have a alarm clock like this. Tried to time it in my head for it to flip to the next minute... Then it was time to change it for daylight saving and forced those flaps almost to the breaking point...going back an hour took 2 minutes...and more of a bitch if you shot past the minute you wanted. Fun to flip it fast in one shot to get it at exactly :00 Guess who busted it...😁...took that thing apart just to know how that bloody thing worked.

Thanks for the compliment... sorry I have not published the design as I was going to create a project with another partner. This hasn't been going as well as expected... not sure what the direction will be now. I did get a bit further than this video, it now has black plastic diecut flaps with white vinyl stickers for the text. It looks a lot better and is quite durable.
I am 6 years too late but one way to make it quicker is making so letters repeat in as the real distribution (geometric progression of 0.5 from the most used to the least used char)
The flaps in this prototype are made from thin card. I have since moved to diecut polypropylene that is 0.5mm thick. There are no hinges per say, just little ears each flap rotates on. Make it heavier to get that old airport sound.
Put the stepper inside the drum and elimimate lost motion of the belt/pulleys.
The motion lost would be negligible.....

You need additional step at bottom to prevent waving. Quarter inch tall and somewhere 1 inch from the front.
Our family had an alarm clock based on that back in the 80's, manual of course, and before digital was widespread, unless my family was cheap.
