      Flipdot pixels are electro-mechanical so they actually get stuck much more often than purely electronic (OLED and SED) or electro-chemical (LCD and Plasma) ones... DLP is also electro-mechanical just like Flipdot however because DLP is built as a microchip and is protected from the air in a vacuum, DLP is also much more reliable than Flipdot. Flipdot requires a lot of power to drive each mechanism because they are huge motorized things and they are exposed to air.

    It does the "static snow" transition every time because i think it cannot toggle all pixels at the same time: back EMF from coils would be too huge to handle. So it toggles just 1/10th at a time, in pseudorandom snow.

    • @Genubath1

      If it is like other displays, it can only flip one column at a time due to the limits of multiplexing and every other row to keep neighboring rows from interfering with each other. Also it can only do that in one direction, so it has to go through that process once to turn pixels on and again to turn them off

    • @JarppaGuru
      @JarppaGuru Год назад +25

      The back EMF would be solved with a simple diode (flyback).
      However you may be onto something with there being a limitation in how quickly all the pixels can be changed.
      Then again given how large the pixels are, it's not going to be too much more demanding than other large screens. I guess if there is a limitation it is overcomable but they didn't go down that path for this particular setup.

      There was such a story, written by Bruce Sterling and William Gibson. It's called The Difference Engine. The computer age arrives a century early. In the novel, there are theaters that use these screens. The people who program the movies are called "clackers". It's a favorite. I've wanted to see a film adaptation for a very long time. Now, it can be done, but Hollywood is too busy remaking every possible movie that already exists.

Since it is just moving pigment around and you only need to use energy to change the pixel state. They also have colored variants, so at least some more variety. Also less prone to getting stuck and way smaller minimum pixel sizes.

    wonder how much electric it use to drive all those 74088 pixel/dots

    • @user-dj1hy6zc6q
      @user-dj1hy6zc6q 8 лет назад +84

      Flip dot displays typically only consume power when each individual dot is flipped. From what I can find online, each dot typically uses somewhere between 1 and 2.5 watts of electricity for 1 to 2 milliseconds each time the dot is flipped.
      At that rate, if you wanted to flip every dot just one time per hour, this 74,088 dot display would consume between 0.074 and 0.370 kilowatt hours of electricity. On the other hand, if you wanted to flip every dot once every second, this 74,088 dot display would consume between 266 and 1332 kilowatt hours of electricity.
      As you see, the power consumption can be considered extremely little on average if you only update all the dots on the sign once a year or could be considered extremely high on average if you update all the dots on the sign multiple times per second. Power consumption is determined by the way you use it.
      In this application, I think the power consumption is probably quite high.

      I think it's an interesting invention. Flip-Disc displays really stand out as a display technology and it shows the nature and evolution of displays. It uses the same exact mechanics no matter how limited it may be. All display technologies have a pixel resolution, we have not really advanced further than this idea, we only increased resolution and colors. Unlike other displays, Flip-Disc systems don't really hurt your eyes like conventional displays, it does not produce light.

    • @Spillerrec
      @Spillerrec 6 лет назад +3

      They might not hurt your eyes, but they do hurt your hears ; )
      But really, they don't have much to offer and I don't get why they were used here other than for being different. They are great at strong sunlight, but this installation is indoors. They don't use power when the display is not updated, but they constantly change the contents.
      There are several display technologies which does not produce light. E-ink is an obvious one, but LCDs does have to produce light either, you can simply have a mirror behind it instead of a back light. (Gameboy Advance is a great example for a color display like this.) Not all displays use pixels either, e.g. 7 segment displays, nixie tubes and spit-flap displays. Black and white CRTs don't have a horizontal resolution either.

    • @venian646
      @venian646 6 лет назад

      I have never heard of E-ink before. I don't know how LCDs work exactly so I don't know what you mean by simply adding a mirror to the back. Maybe one day we will move on from the current display technologies and we can simply manipulate light around us to produce visuals. I was watching this video one day and it blew my mind, the idea that when one projects colors, black is also projected: ruclips.net/video/p-OCfiglZRQ/видео.html

    Anyone here know the advantages this technology against led display? How much does cost per sq feet? Does it cheaper than led? Or it just for aesthetic purpose?

      2 years late but, flipdot displays have advantages such as low power consumption, high visibility, longevity, and a unique retro aesthetic. However, they also have limitations, including limited color options, complex maintenance, and a potentially higher upfront cost compared to LED displays

      for much smaller displays, flip dots are great because they don't require power when they aren't being flipped. They're also very easy to read. Something of this scale is purely for entertainment, you'd be better off using LED's.

      Gazelle Samyueru Maybe displaying time and temperature or a menu. Readable in full sun and doesn't need to be updated a lot (time needs to be updated once in a minute, and not all pixels).

      mmh. But we went through most of the 80's with a sizeable portion of computers using 320x240 or lower resolutions.
      320x240 is 76,800 pixels, so that gives a good sense of what kind of display this is equivalent to.
      If you have a PC by the way it's likely still booting in 320x200 even to this day.

    the ONLY positive in this i can see, is the repair/replaceability of broken down "pixels" & the lower energy requirements, compared to other displays, but apart from that, no reason to want to have a slow, loud & rough pixeled picture these days!

      Think of it as a mechanical display where the pixel is either black or white and its state is mechanically controlled hence the noise when the image is moving or refreshing.

  • @34zporlier10

    Its funny how Physical noise from the tiles and Analog Noise from an Old TV sound almost the same lol

    • @HelloKittyFanMan
      @HelloKittyFanMan Год назад

      Except that "physical," "analog," "noise," and "old" aren't brand names; and that all actual sound that we hear is physical, and thus analog, anyway. And that a TV doesn't have to be old for you to hear this sort of sound on it.
