  • A F/A-18C Legacy Hornet breaks the sound barrier, leaving behind the telltale and infamous "Sonic Boom" as it roars past a US Aircraft Carrier in the middle of the ocean. Make sure you don't blow out your speakers!
Also featured in this video is an F-18 doing a "photo pass" (beginning of the video), and an F-18 performing an overhead flyby, simulating its preparations for landing (end of the video).

The yawn so understandable. 37 years Navy speaking here, Airedale and black shoe, enlisted and commissioned. So, while to a civilian it always “seems” exciting….to a Sailor, it’s just another day at the office. You have your “job”, you have your “watch standing bill”, you have your collateral duties, you have your ever-present training, the 1MC announcements, firefighting and ship fighting drills….and if you’re lucky, you get time to “s-t, shower and shave” hopefully sleep, and maybe, again if you’re lucky, time to eat. Hell, I was yawning just remembering how damned tired you could be….and still perform! And now in my mid-60s, God how I miss it sometimes! Go Navy!

Fly 3 better get that bird out of the landing area before that F-18 comes around to land.
F-14's were better at supersonic flybys, they were faster and would be a half mile past the ship before you heard the boom.

Tomcats did it better....when the skipper of our squadron was being relived, his last flight was made at about 100ft. going 800 mph. We were inside the ship but we had a door to a sponson and the door was slightly open...when the boom hit the door opened all the way up.

Some of the best times I spent in the Marines was on the flight deck - during flight ops or just walking around during down time laying in a 46 or a 53 looking at the stars. LHD - 5 Bataan and (RIP) LDA - 3 Belleau Wood (31st MEU). I would have loved to be in a supercarrier and be around some jets, but flooding the well deck and having some steel beach fun was also good times!
