Many thanks to all the USN Sailors- past, present & future. If you want to see everything that happens on a carrier check out this well done video from 1988 of a 3 day Tiger Cruise (it's 5 parts!). It's dated (aircraft, uniforms, civilian's hair : -) but impressively complete down to greasing the arresting wire.

My first carrier was the Connie. We did a dependence day cruise. Put on a little air show for the families. An F-4 was going to do a high speed fly by at flight deck level. Aircraft was about 500 feet off the port side at flight deck level. When they throttled up for the fly by the aircraft exploded and fell into the sea in 2 pieces. Aircrews family was on the flight deck watching. We lost TEN guys on that deployment. Lost one to a drug overdose in Hong Kong, one to heart attack at age 22 and one to alcohol poisoning. The rest were NORMAL flight deck/naval aviation operations. Flight deck is not a very safe place to work.

Thanks Captain. I will say after serving on the carrier Forrestal from 84-87, this video does not show what life at sea is really like day in, day out. There were 5,000 people on board and I was lonely. Everyone's thoughts were on loved ones back home.

      Hi Mark,
Yes! I understand! I also served on a navy ship for 2 years~
I understand your feeling while you worked on naval war ship.
And now I am a Container ship’s Captain for years, so I always away from home, family, friends…….etc.
      Still lonely every day! Haha~~
      This is my destiny.
Anyway, life is too short to worry!
      So, don’t worry, be happy!!
      And Good Luck to you!

that looks like an awesome experience. you wouldn't get the Royal Navy doing anything like that, as there is too much health and safety involved.

You were in far more danger last time you rode in a car. This wasn't hours of fast pace flight ops. :-)

The "BIG STICK" TR would be proud to see this ship with his name on it. The real danger zone is the flight deck itself. Truly the most dangerous place/job in the world. The only thing more impressive than flight ops on the boat is night flight ops on the boat. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future, ESPECIALLY CAPTAIN CROZIER! FLY NAVY!!!

    • @markwest4996

I happened to be visiting the USS Midway the morning Capt. Crozier was having his retirement ceremony. It's sad that standing up for his crew put a hault to his advancement. Imagine being Capt. Sardiello who finished his tour as CO and was called back to replace Crozier in the middle of covid.

    • @USNveteran
      @USNveteran Год назад

@@markwest4996 I always kind of compared Capt Crozier's situation to that of Capt McVay of the USS Indianapolis. All of the crew that survived from Indianapolis went to bat for Capt Mc Vay at his trial, yet they still convicted him. Years later he was acquitted but it was too late as he had committed suicide. FLY NAVY!!!

I've often thought we should send older people in good health to serve. My skills as an electronics technician are vastly better now than when I served on carrier USS Forrestal from '84-'87. Perhaps we should send some politicians too :-)

I have been to Air force bases, They keep arm guards and fences to keep people 1000 feet away from planes, the Navy is like screw it lets bring 1000 people on deck and we are going to land a plane 30 feet from you and cat shot them next to you as well . I love It

If the Air Wing isn't embarked at the time then having hundreds of people along the side of the flight deck isn't a problem the pair of E/F Super Hornets F/A-18's were most likely from an air wing that was operating from their shore base, and while flight ops are indeed dangerous it is vital to show the American people how are carriers and their respective air wing operates!

Finally, someone gets the safety issue right! Sure, it's dangerous but we all take a **far greater** risk driving in a car.

Join the Navy and you can do it too... Day after day after day after day... You'll stare out at the ocean and see about 7 miles of water... Day after day after day. On top of that - 12 on/12 off work schedules 7 days a week. I have no idea why I'm so nostalgic about such a messed up time of my life :-)
