I don't think the mom knew it was a shark. That's what she said in the interview. She thought she was taking video of her daughter splashing around in the ocean. She didn't realize there was a shark until her daughter ran back to the beach and told her.

I've seen one go after an injured or fatigued bird in the water and took it several tries to finally seize the lethargic prey. Sometimes their overzealous frenzied state work against them especially when the prey is small. Three things worked for the girl, shallow water where the shark tail was clearly scraping the sea floor affecting it's efficiently to propel itself, the waves that carried the girl forward and her small size that kinda made her such a movable and less stable target. Had it been a grown man, if it wasn't an explanatory bump, would have taken a chunk out of the leg. Sharks have such heighten predatory sensors for it to swim close to someone unwittingly. It's there for a reason.

Another point, unless you know the topography of the sea bed in that area, no child that small WITHOUT HER FLOATIES on is safe. One minute the child is standing in two feet of water and 5 steps later she could be in 4-6 feet. Things like Jelly fish and in certain areas, sharks, always have to be considered. There is a reason why you're the adult with the developed brain and the kids are kids.

Some People dive with sharks every day. That's their job. I go shark diving, and it's completely safe if you follow the guidelines. The majority of shark incidents happen in shallow, murky water, like in this video. People are splashing around, which attracts and triggers sharks. If they bite, they let go right away because they don't like the taste of us or anything on land. They eat only what's in the ocean. Sharks aren't as dangerous as some think.
