Ronald Macafee that’s a very good point. However, just because it’s never happened to you, doesn’t mean it never will. If you’ve heard of stories of other encounters, then the probability of it eventually happening is possible, and you should therefore practice preventative measures based on those stories. But realistically, yeah, if it’s never happened in twenty years, you most likely won’t be as prepared. Similar to small town police not being as prepared or equipped to handle a mass murder as a major city like LA.

I think it’s important as a tour guide to at least point out the fact that it’s possible to see sharks. As others have mentioned, the company advertises themselves as a very care free and laidback excursion / snorkeling experience, whereas most are straight forward. Most will tell you the warnings and dangers of what you’re doing so you’re aware. This company did not. As a vacationer paying for an experience, you put your trust in the tour guide to let you know the dangers. “Hey it’s common to see sharks in this area” or “watch out for the sting rays” etc.
She probably is. How as a parent do you ever get that image out of your mind? And the guilt she’d be feeling even though she has none to carry, would be overwhelming. Lydia, what she is saying is that this is a third world country. Yes, they “should have” this and should have that, but when you go to another country, safety measures don’t happen. I learned this while visiting Mexico. You can kiss your American rights good bye down there. They don’t exist. I know of someone who died in a prison because they would not allow his wife to give him his medication for diabetes. And forget suing. Things are very different in other countries. I remember staying in a hotel in Cancun once when our kids were toddlers and the balcony had a railing that the bars were so wide that a kid could fall right through. They don’t have the building laws down there to make the rails more narrow. It was the stupidest thing I ever saw. But again, it’s not America, and we have to remember that when we travel abroad.

What he told you is probably the closest thing to the truth. Shark attacks are pretty rare. But what we all must accept is that any type of shark can be in any part of the ocean at any time. The best you can do is look up stats for attacks on people in different places, don't go swimming alone or at dawn or dusk, cross your fingers, and hope for the best! 🤷♀️

I can’t imagine being in her mother’s shoes. I recall my loved ones on a private beach going a little too far out for my comfort. I sat and watched, thinking the worst. Nothing happened but it felt so scary to me despite the shallow water.
My wife & I have been certified divers since the mid-1980s. Florida has more shark fatalities than any other state, and yet more people in the state are killed every year by falling coconuts. Ten or 15 years ago Florida outlawed feeding sharks on "swim with the sharks" boat tours. The reason was because you chum the water first to attract them & boaters had noticed that sharks seemed to be getting attracted to just the sound of boat engines even though there was no chum in the water. This practice is still legal in the Bahamas though. I think boat crews should be trained in basic life saving skills like CPR & tourniquets, but shark attacks so seldom happen that it's totally unrealistic to expect to have shark spotters on a small dive boat. WAY, and I mean WAY more people die from drowning/respiratory issues on snorkeling trips than from shark bites.
Matt from Florida very well said, I lived in the keys most my life, and the biggest detriment to sharks as a species is the negative reputation they hold. That’s really not my point...

Most will tell you the warnings and dangers of what you’re doing so you’re aware. This company did not. As a vacationer paying for an experience, you put your trust in the tour guide to let you know the dangers. “Hey it’s common to see sharks in this area” or “watch out for the sting rays” etc.
I’m literally sick over this. As a Mom my heart breaks in pieces for this family
I feel so bad for her mother. If that happened to my daughter I’d have to be heavily medicated.
I would absolutely die. I think of my girl when I watch these and it’s just totally heartbreaking..
She probably is. How as a parent do you ever get that image out of your mind? And the guilt she’d be feeling even though she has none to carry, would be overwhelming. As a parent that was with her I’m sure she telling herself all the things she should have done when in reality there was nothing she could do, especially once her daughter was bleeding. How awful.
@@cayliiiiii please be careful with the death talk, because it is absolutely the truth. A kid I grew up with died and there had to be shifts for his mom to make sure she didn't kill herself. I remember holding back the group of moms as others held his mom as she screamed at the pallbearers to not take her baby from her. That still haunts me.
I’m from the Bahamas and unfortunately things like this happen all the time. Americans are used to having safety regulations written into law and I don’t think they realize there is a lot more risk in these tourist attractions on the islands than there would be doing something similar in the US.
Hannah E: Then they should also be warned!!! Not let them go in all for the sake of a buck!! Crazy!! Tourists need to know this!! Also, all these places need medical equipment on board at least for pain and to do tourniquets that can save a person from bleeding out and possibly their life!!!
People need to realize that animals have instincts to survive and unfortunately in Yellowstone with bears or in the ocean with sharks you are in their territory and they are going to do what they need to do. My daughter snorkels and I can't imagine what these parents are going through.

There should be some measures taken knowing these are lady divers that needed some guide tips to being safe under water it's a risk you take but not when a life is involved
@@vasanthathangavelu695 What? Female divers need guide tips that men don't?
Vasantha, jackass, what tips do you really think would've helped against shark attacks?
@@sarcasticallyrearranged : Name calling is really out of line here. Gezzzz And in fact there are certain "tips" that can be given to people, that can either avoid having a shark attack you, or deter/fend off a shark that is now in attack mode. None of the tips assures anything, but they could help, and have helped some people. The information is out there, just look it up. Just like there are tips about bear attacks, or mountain lions...etc etc. Bottom line though is that when you go into ocean, there is a possibility you could become a shark attack victim. The risk is higher in some places than others, but overall, shark attacks are still considered extremely rare, considering the number of people in the water around the world on any given day.
Your advice is spot on! An unarmed human is not an apex predator in the ocean or in a wilderness forest for that matter. Always a good precaution to strap a diver's knife on your leg before you swim in their territory, and stick close to a buddy who is experienced & prepared.
Dive companies will gladly take your money while understating the risks. Now this family will be devastated by their loss for the rest of their lives.

Guaranteed: she’d still be alive if they had a tourniquet or quickclot. Hell, even sterile bandages.
Hi Works It’s hard to make a piece of clothing an effective tourniquet but it can happen. My experience in this is not super extensive. I’m an EMT civilian side and Air Force reserves. A good friend of mine who is a paramedic told me that the girl would be alive had they had quickclot solution or a standard tourniquet. Clothing could work if done properly. Also, YES, it'd be smart for the participants to bring their own equipment as far as an emergency bag/kit. I think "first aid kits" just Carry Your Standard Band-Aids, sterile pads, maybe some headache pills, stuff like that.. some might have had a bandage that could have helped as a tourniquet though :/ but yes, totally a great idea to bring your emergency bag. I also think they need to invent something so that IF a shark is approaching you or has already that u either pull, push, or trigger some kind of "scare" to the shark. Like a smoke bomb or a damn spear hell idk but each diver shud be equiped w some sort of defense ... :(
I think its just not worth it tho

I went on cruise a few years back and went on an unplanned snorkeling outing. I asked the guide, what kind of sharks do you have here in the Bahama's and he said, nothing to worry about, they're all small ones and they don't come close to the beaches. They're more afraid of you and will stay away. Thank God we didn't see any but they are liars and only want those tourist dollars. I can only imagine the terror that Jordan and her mom suffered. God bless their family.
you know how many sharks kill people every year? around 8. You know how many sharks get killed by people every year? around 100 million. Humans are the real threat here. Sharks are becoming endangered because of us.
Just like the poor kid that jumped off the boat and was never seen again. But they still say it’s rare 🙄 they want that tourism money.
I can't believe the mother wasn't attacked, too, this is so freaking mind blowing
i was thinking that too. This isnt meant to be rude but my legit thought, I was wondering if maybe she might have been on her period or she peed and the sharks sensed it? I find it weird that they were only attracted to her and it wasnt only 1 shark, it was multiples and only on her, none went for the mom. Info like that can save people's lives. In all seriousness and respect.
@@RF0rty sharks usually have a taste test when it comes to feeling things. They don’t have fingers or hands to feel and touch things. I wouldn’t blame it on the sharks but more so that they had no medical staff, things like jellyfish sting’s venom can be far more fatal than a shark bite and it’s always god to have safely on your side.

@@thedevilsadvocate5210 Incorrect. Without them getting in the shark's home there would be no story. They chose to go into the ocean. Sharks live in the ocean.
I try and explain all the time this is almost never going to happen, but media usually covers them in a way that does not shed light to how rare this actually is
The guilt must be unbearable. I'm sorry for your loss. Wow
