My favorite thing about Dreamcast Mr. Driller is that it's compatible with the microphone, so you can control your drill by screaming. Excellent video, as always.
I really love that detail of how Mr. Driller started out as another Dig Dug sequel, and even if the project evolved into something else *Dig Dug it's still part of the canon (being both in-universe and metaphorically "the father" of the series)*
I remeber playing the GBC version when I was younger and just being utterly creeped out by the concept of the game during the intro. It was basically a nightmarish disaster scenario, potentially resulting in the death of millions, juxtaposed with these colourful adorable blocks. I'm pretty sure it inspired a few nightmares when I was younger, involving the earth being smothered and crushed and everyone dying. I'm really excited to play this on the Switch.
Driller’s art style genuinely feels like an artists beloved passion project, it just has so much heart and effort drowning out of it. I’m definitely a fan now ^^
Goodness, I'd no idea just how interesting the Dig Dug/ Driller universe actually is. That Dig Dug: Digging Strike looks genuinely fun. I purchased DrillLand solely for my undying love for the music and composer, but after getting way into the game itself, I really hope that Mr. Driller catches on down here and we can dig a bit deeper into the series. Thanks for a very informative video!
If you really want your mind blown, Dig Dug and Driller aren't just connected. Those games are also all part of a future history timeline that includes the Galaxian/Galaga series, the Ace Combat franchise, Cyber Sled, and more: ugsf-series.com/en/
Right?! "Here's a game you know nothing about and I'm going to make you adore it." Jeremy is a national treasure and should sit on a pedestal in the Smithsonian. They can bring him snacks and drinks and give him a little cot to sleep on.
8:53 It all sounded great, until I heard that there’s a talking dog called Poochie. I’ve been burned before by talking dogs called Poochie - he never got to the fireworks factory.
genuinely astonished he took 20 minutes to start talking about the music. Mark of a master writer to have such restraint! I discovered Go Shiina’s soundtrack on a previous Parish livestream, have sought it out since, and it’s the most staggering meld of different genres I’ve ever seen in a single work. Absolutely unpredictable art of sound. Thank you Jeremy, thank you Mr. Driller
Also, it's been established that Susumu's mom is "Kissy", the protagonist of arcade game "Baraduke", though she and Taizo appear to be separated. Yes, Dig Dug is canonically a divorced dad.
Drill Sprits was the title that made me aware of the series back in 2004- I dug it so much (metaphorically speaking) that I imported the European version to get the Dristone and Space levels- the full version of the game may be less ambitious than Drill Land, but the dual-screen playfield was wonderful for keeping track of what was above you, and I'd call it the second best Driller game that I've played. Thanks for the heads up on Digging Strike- I missed that one...
Same, his streaming of it made me aware of it. I fucking loved Mr Driller for PS1 back in the day so I'm so glad this game in the series is now widely available. Its the perfect little puzzle game for a handheld system.
I'm having lots of fun playing this Switch version. The first and only Mr. Driller game I have played before was on the PS2 Namcollection, a Namco Anniversary pack. I really hope they release future titles in this series.
Mr. Parish, I just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoy your videos. To me, they are on par with on air shows like, “How it’s made”. It’s how you talk about the games. This would be the kind of video/show that I would have LOVED to have seen when I was much much younger. If I had a million dollars, and wasn’t as financial troubled as I am now, I would send some your way. You are great, as are your videos. Thank you.
Wow. Mind=Blown. I still have my copy of Mr. Driller 2 for GBA that I got while in Japan that I pickup and play every now and then. I felt like the only person who appreciated this series in the US. Great explanation of the full history here. Kudos to Namco for taking some simple concepts and running with them in so many creative ways.
Welp, I started the video at "oh, that one mediocre puyo puyo/platformer hybrid" and ended it at "MUST BUY NOW." Six hours of obsession later and I'm just swinging by to say THANKS JEREMY!
This retrospective got me to buy and encourage my friends to get Drill Land. Thanks for opening my eyes to a franchise I well overlooked for years! Great video Jeremy, here's to hoping for a substantial revival!
I'm so glad Namco was able to remaster this for the west, watching you stream the original was my introduction to the series and your clear love for the game prompted me to buy it at launch. I'm not surprised you took the chance to give us the most comprehensive Gaiden Works episode to date!
Fantastic video! Drill Land is one of my new favorite games. The franchise is fascinating because it's so humble and considered. Instead of some grand story and arc, it's just... game developers iterating on ideas, repackaging them... Playing on Switch made me realize how much I miss the arcade simplicity. Having all these slight variations & markers for completion make it feel as content rich as a Big Icon Map game, with much more charm and immediacy. I wanna see more small games from the big Japanese game companies. They give me his special, joyful feeling.
I have played *so much* of the Mr Drillux clone on the RS-97 and RetroFW devices. Enough to where I went in and fixed various issues that had built up over the years as well as made it work on the RetroArcade Mini device. Really appreciate you telling us about Drill Land! I can't get enough of Mr. Driller. =D
I remember renting Mr. Driller when I was 8 or 9 and I had no idea it had a rocky reception. I absolutely loved it and was disappointed I never saw a copy to buy. Guess it was the perfect age to experience it in the 90s; old enough to be aware and lust after the edgier games but not yet self-conscious enough to be ashamed of liking cute things.
Worked in video game retail part-time as a teen at the time, and you could not keep the game on the shelves. Not hugely popular because they never shipped enough to stores (one or two copies a week) but it was definitely a big sleeper. It was the type of game that had a very underserved audience.
Man I keep forgetting Drill till you Drop was delisted. So glad I own it and still have it installed on my 3DS. I've always had a thing for the Mr.Driller series. Good games it's just a shame the US missed out on so many of them when they where new.
Great video. I've loved this series since the limited but highly addictive Dreamcast version, and it's great to finally play Drill Land on Switch. It was also nice to hear that I'm not the only one struggling to get to stage 3 of Drill Land.
This really is the Best Of Mr Driller and I hope that the series does contiune and tries new things. I also adored Digging Strike and wished we'd got a continuation there too.
Neopets players would recognize this as the inspiration for their flash game SNOWMUNCHER... In fact I would argue that the neopets reskin of this game is more well-known than the original in western countries
There’s one thing unmentioned. How the modes kind of mirror rides in Disneyland. You’ve got your Space Mountain, Haunted House, back in the 90s there was an Indiana Jones ride in Disney Orlando… even the World Tour seems modeled after “It’s a Small World After All”, with children from different countries singing and dancing.
I loved Mr. Driller on the Dreamcast. It's one of the few games where I like the arranged soundtrack more than the original. I don't remember whether the Dreamcast used the original OST or both since I mostly just play it on my computer now. All I know is that Cutie Saurs Waltz is legendary. Getting up to that point is always exciting.
I've never liked Mr. Driller as much as Dig Dug however I do remember it being fun and I will definitely take the chance to get the Drill Land localization
what frustrated me is they didn't release Mr. Driller G which is the game before Drill Land which is the sequel and carries things over to it(the antagonists and general family conflicts between Taizo and Ataru)so players who haven't seen the translation of Mr. Driller G(not an actual PS1 patch but editted images)will not make sense to them.
If there's something minor I wouldn't mind having these days, it would be artwork of Susumu and Anna, both in their Drill Knight outfits (from Ace and Drill Land, respectively). A possible game mode (or full game, maybe?) involving those two as a team wouldn't be a bad idea, either.
Finally, a Mr. Driller video to complement Jeremy's Heiankyo Alien video and his Megaman Legends video. He has completed the trifecta. Related: I'm so glad that I know about Mr. Driller now.
Hey Jeremy, thanks for making this stuff interesting every week (even if I don’t always agree with your opinions on some of these games). One thing I look forward to on Wednesdays on my way to pick up dinner for the family. Keep it up!
Just read on TCRF that Mr Driller 2 in the arcade had a stage that could be unlocked with either a PS1 memory card or VMU with a save file that cleared Time Attack. Only worked on namco Cyberlead cabs that had the slots for them. Alternatively you can also unlock it with a long code within the test menu of the PCB. Now I wonder about G which sadly doesn't have a page on TCRF.
I knew Mr. Driller on the Playstation thanks to "The Classic", but I didn't know about Drill Land until I started watching this video and was glad to find it on-sale on the Playstation 4 shop. $4.49... worth the import shipping.
Great in depth work there Jeremy. I gotta say though, there are some nasty interlace artifacts all over the retro footage. Worst in the Soul Calibur bit but also in the PS1 Driller clips.
The Game Boy Advance version of Mr. Driller 2 is still available on the Wii U eShop in case anyone is interested. The two-player mode doesn't work on the Wii U, though.
