Heres a trick to make F Zero 40% easier:
When making tight turns, keep tapping the acceleration button (A) all while holdind down the shoulder button. You your traction will be sooooooo much better and it makes ghe game so much easier. If you find yourself also bouncing around the track after hitting the bumpers, hold down brake so your car can realign it self. Youll lose speed but youll stop bouncing. Its actually in the tutoral but not alot of people go to a tutoral for an F zero game.

Yeah, it's pretty much required. I cringed when I saw that Jeremy reviewed this whole game without knowing that the control is significantly different than the SNES version and you tap accelerate around corners to not ping pong on walls. Oh well

@@klax001 I actually, coincidentally, started playing this for the first time recently and this helps a lot. As a fan of the SNES original, this game's a lot more slippery and slidey, and I was struggling on the corners.

Louis honestly I think it does. Without blast turns the game is virtually unplayable but with them you have the best racer on the system. He also wasn't holding back on the D-Pad to avoid taking damage and losing his momentum after a jump.

Using blast turns (tapping a repeatedly while going around corners) will help a lot with Maximum Velocity. It even helps when you're getting bounced around, it tries to align your direction of travel with the direction of your nose
In fact, i'd say it's an essential technique for this game on any difficulty level and almost any track

  • @PPLToast

I got Maximum Velocity with 3DS ambassador program and didn't think much of it initially. Wasn't till I was bored during school breaks that I finally tried it out. At first it was just attempting to complete a few cups with trial and error and not having much success. I gave up and left the game running on the title screen as I was wondering what else to do. It was then that a demo played that showed how to turn corners better by tapping the A button as you're turning. I was amazed that such an important tech was hidden right under my nose.
I decided to give it a try and sure enough, I had instant success with it and managed to complete all the cups in a few days. I felt so proud, finally finishing an F-Zero game. But it was then I found out that to unlock the best vehicle in the game you need to complete every cup on the Master difficulty... with every vehicle. I felt like giving up, as learning the cups is one thing but learning the quirks of how every vehicle operates felt like another level entirely. I decided to push on regardless. I kept learning more and more as I played and while it took a few weeks, I eventually had every cup on every vehicle mastered and Jet Vermilion unlocked. Was a really satisfying experience all in all. Still need to get around to acquiring GP Legend and Climax someday...

I'm glad I read this! I used to own it for my GBA back in 2001, but it was stolen out of my dorm room. I was not very good at the game and I'm doubtful I completed many races. F-Zero is my first GBA memory. I didn't even know the GBA was out until someone in my class came to school one day with 4 GBAs, 4 copies of the game, and link cables. He had apparently won a contest in Nintendo Power or some such and suddenly the least popular kid in class was the most popular as he used his new hardware to curry favour with the cool kids by letting them play him at F-Zero.

We were willing to temporarily forget that he was an asshole for that car ride. And later rides, when he had Advance Wars.

@@JeremyParish Sorry, I got so distracted by the beginning of the video that I was digging around looking for my original manual during most of the footage. For whatever it's worth, the manual calls this technique "Blast Turns". For anyone without their own copy, here's the description:
      Blast Turn
      Control: Tap the A Button
By tapping the A Button, your machine's engine will ignite momentarily, allowing you to straighten out of corners more quickly.
Use Blast Turns: During cornering or when your machine is off-balance (after colliding with another machine or the guard rail, etc.).
*Well-timed Blast Turns will really make a difference on especially tight corners.

I love F-Zero Maximum Velocity and it's definitely a difficult game; but there's a hidden tutorial movie that shows some tips and tricks that literally change the way you play. Everyone knows about leaning into turns and braking, but there's a mechanic where if you let off the gas and tap it again, you get a little boost that straightens out your vehicle in turns, and it helps control your slide and hover. All those times where you ping-pong between walls? Pressing the accelerator for a quick boost will pull you out of those situations. It's literally the only way to 100% complete the game- a task I managed to do over the course of a few months in my high school library.

Love love love F-Zero!! Again, as I mentioned on FB, I was really taken with the dual layer mode 7 fields (the track itself and the surface of whatever planet your on, scrolling at a slightly slower pace) being utilized in all the GBA games, the sense of depth was much more authentic vs. the original SNES game. I guess it's a minor detail but from a technical point of view I was very impressed.

I notice Maximum Velocity is the one F-Zero game that Takaya Imamura is not credited on (if nintendo.fandom.com is accurate). Maybe this has something to do with the character cast being different. The Super NES Classic Interviews give more information on his character work in Star Fox and F-Zero and when in development it occurred (also Imamura thinks he designed Captain Falcon as a mascot character for the SNES). The Iwata Asks Steel Diver interview says the other directors reined in Imamura designing characters for that game.

  • @massivepileup

I think having a player unit running around giving orders isn't really a MOBA (those have the player order one unit around and have it fight), it's more of an Action RTS, like Battlezone '99, Uprising and of course the proto RTSes (not just Herzog Zwei but also Rescue Raiders had the basic concept of the player being one unit while ordering other units to take the enemy base). I think beyond its weird name MOBAs can be summed up as competitive action RPG grinding, they're not really in the RTS bucket despite being based on the tech for RTSes.

As a kid with Maximum Velocity I actually thought it was super easy, even tedious at times because once you knew the trick of just tapping the accelerator when going round turns it lost all challenge since that gave you massive corner grip without really losing any speed.
As for Napoleon, I believe it was originally slated for a full European release as the Nintendo magazines I was reading at the launch all had reviews of it.

GX was incredible (minus the ludicrously difficult story mode) and is still hands down my favorite racing game ever. I was even lucky enough to have an arcade with AX nearby which was also really fun.
Even if they don't want to try making a new game for fear that they won't be able to top it, they at the very least need to port it onto a newer console. I'm pretty sure the series has been dormant for so long that there's *adults* that only know Captain Falcon as the guy from Smash Bros.

Not pointing out the blast turn mechanic where you Tap A while cornering and to stabilize the machine is a huge oversight. It is a essential mechanic to be able to play the game effectively without sliding all over the place even with the Wind Walker. Master it, and you have yourself easily the best racer on the platform hands down. I know it's hard to notice the tutorial clip but you have to disclose it to have a fair perspective on this classic racer. My favorite game on the system.
Also when you go off jumps, hold back on the D-Pad so you don't slam onto the road, take damage and lose your momentum.

It is insane to me that Nintendo will not take another look at what they've got with F-ZERO. Every entry in the franchise has been NES-hard, and we've seen plenty of older series become more widely accepted after a more accessible refresh. Plus, the ridiculous amount of characters and over the top story cry out for a story mode that people can actually witness for themselves without full mastery. If Fire Emblem can do it, so can Captain Falcon.

Maximum Velocity was one of the first GBA games I owned that I still have to this day. At some point a couple years back I played the crap out of it and mastered the controls. The problem I’m seeing from your gameplay is that you’re not hitting accelerate as you turn. I’m not talking about holding down the accelerate button either, I’m saying press the accelerate button multiple times as you turn and remember to use the L and R buttons depending on what direction you’re turning respectively. This carries over to all the classic F-Zero games.

The gameplay is vey different from the Snes version. And The "Mode 7" in this title was superior as it multiple independent layers. The Snes only had one. INO the perfect version would have Snes Physics with GBA Tech

Napoleon GBA, the self-proclaimed "this is the true story" game, where you fight off people that should be dead well before the era.

I'm torn between references. There's the Hermione "You could be killed! Or worse: disqualified." or the Portal "Contact with the floor will result in an 'Unsatisfactory' mark, followed by death."

As many mentioned already, that's not how you really play "Maximum Velocity"...of course it's very hard to control your vehicle, if you don't actually control it properly.^^ Using the L and R buttons (also in opposite ways), A tapping etc. makes you control the vehicle WAY better and then the game is playable and a lot of fun. The gameplay footage here makes the controls look rather bad, which they aren't.

Dude... you should check some Tipps and tricks before recording! In this game you have to held down when landing to avoid taking dmg and losing speed. Also you should spam the acceleration button when taking a curve so you won't drift outwards

    Wait. GBA can't mode 7?

    • @JeremyParish
      @JeremyParish  5 лет назад +2

Mode 7 was one of 8 graphical display modes built into the Super NES hardware. GBA's tech worked differently and didn't require programmers to use those display modes. It could fake Mode 7 effects decently, but they were not the real thing. That's why Super NES ports like Final Fantasy VI look a little wonky when you hop aboard the airships.

:) Three years later, when is the next Gameboy Works Advance? What a tease, Konami Krazy Racers can be argued as the better kart over Mario given the content, though being third party and most characters obscurities from Japan only may have had a play in that. :D

JUST BLAST DRIFT ACCDJDBS sorry I swear all the reviews I've seen online talk about how hard the game is but don't know this pretty much essential technique (which they tell you about in the manual!). It makes the game far more enjoyable and pick up n playish, as you DON'T need to memorize the courses by any means, even on higher difficulties!

I've long felt F-Zero was ultimately killed by Mario Kart simply consistently being a much better selling series. It is only practical for Nintendo to fund so many games, and if they decide to release a new racing game then it is only practical for it to be a new Mario Kart.

Ah, NdCube, the developers that can make things look good but play bad... Seems like this could also be the case here? I dunno, I'm not good at F-ZERO but the tracks here seem way too thin and unforgiving.

Hey Jeremy, love the work that do. Probably one of the best writers in game journalism today. If you could make one minor tweak to your videos, I ask that you please stop showing the endings of these games. Yes I understand these games are 20 years older and then some, but some of us have have yet to drive into them. I have to skip some of your videos in fear of spoiling the ending for myself. Anyhow, thanks for all the time & effort you put into your content 👍

    • @JeremyParish
      @JeremyParish  5 лет назад +7

I would never spoil the story of a recent game, but to suggest I'm ruining someone's game experience by (in this case) showing a still character portrait that also appears in the game manual is utterly ludicrous.

Jeremy, I love you but... I don't see the corrolation between Napoleon and MOBAs. I don't know if you've ever actually played League or DotA, but your character in the game doesn't command your side's creeps/minions. In fact, despite the genre being born from an RTS, NOBODY commands them; they're completely autonomous. The only thing you have direct (or even indirect) control over in a MOBA is your own individual character. That or I've been playing league WAY wrong all these years!
