Arcade games have a _lot_ of lore. Like, did you know about the lore for one of the Space Invaders games? In 2073, a hyper-intelligent race of aliens found a Space Invaders machine floating in space after it broke away from a garbage ship, and the aliens then invaded the Earth in the year 2091, with their attack strategy based on the video game. I am *not making any of this up.*
Conceptually, the idea of combining the “above ground” and “underground” Dig Dug games using the DS’ two screens is really clever. Shame about the execution.

Though, Namco High screwed up and made Kissy (referred to here as Toby Masuyo) a teenager (maybe young adult?) who is very close friends with 19-year-old Namco High student Hiromi Tengenji from Burning Force. Somehow, the writers missed the fact that Tobi Masuyo is Dig Dug's ex-wife and screwed up the timeline as a result. Maybe I'm the crazy one, but I love Dig Dug 2. OG Dig Dug is cool too, don't get me wrong, but there's nothing more satisfying than luring all the monsters into one area and making that one single cut that plunges them all into the water.
Ok I'm sorry but how did you not know about Dig Dug II, I used to play that all the time as a kid. It wasn't even exclusive to the NES it was literally an arcade game, though tbf I think the arcade version only got released in Japan.
I'm more shocked that Chubby Checker, the singer who sang "Let's Twist Again", remade his song just for Dig Dug commercial campaign 2 decades later. I just CAN'T BELIEVE HE DID THIS! I love "Let's Twist Again" but...wow..just wow! :O Really nice video!
I played a Dig Dug 2 emulation all the time when I was 8. I was so confused the first time I saw DD1 footage. Though probably not as hard as when I found out that inflating enemies was in the sequel the whole time.
My experience with finding out Dig Dug 2 exists is pretty similar lol. I was at a local retro game store and wanted to get Dig Dug on the NES and picked up dig dug 2 on accident and didn't notice the Roman numeral until I started playing. All I remember is going "what the hell is this?"
Yo man, thankyou for this video. It's so well done, and it's such an obscure topic. I really appreciate the absurdity of the whole story, and hearing it makes the world seem a bit more silly and fun. Really it's amazing.
What I recall where I first hear that Taizo and Toby are divorcing, it happened in the Dig Dug Digging Strike game. Watching the secret ending cutscene after clearing Stage 12 on Hard mode. Can’t explain it, little complicated and unsettling.
i played dig dug 2 on namco museum for the ds as a kid! it was my first introduction to the series (unfortunately) but i liked it at the time. really glad to be seeing it covered even though, as you said, it ruined my life.
I'm always amazed at how ahead of time Namco is. It doesn't always pay off for them, but at least it shows that they aren't afraid to be creative. Another thing that amazes me is their ability to create addictive games, perhaps because in the beginning they specialized in taking coins from players in arcades. MR.Driller is one of the best examples of the kind of game that you think "I'll play it just one more time", only to try again some 10x in a row.
I get that it's pure nostalgia, but I loved the hell out of Dig Dug II on the NES. I never even played the first until many years later. Still prefer II over the first. So yeah, this kid was quite happy to have received that gift. Still play it occasionally to this day.
Thank you for doing a video on Dig Dug lore, his name is Taizo hori and that's more than we know about Pacman. Do a lore video on him, that would be interesting!
Dig Dug II came and went... but I was one of those kids in 1989 that got it for my NES for Christmas. Honestly, I still like it a lot more than the first one.
2:38 I was gonna bring up how that's also a kink if you didn't, but you actually beat me to it! Most people would just make an inflation joke and move on. Kudos for you! ...if that even means anything for this context.
My family actually had the namcomuseum game when I was a kid and I remember my cousin and I playing two players on the dig dug arrangement game all the time. It was a blast. I've not even heard about the other dig dug games until now and thought that was the only sequel out of my ignorance. I've inherited almost all the video games we used to own and might actually have a copy of namcomuseum somewhere... but also maybe not, a lot of things got lost to time.
I played this game a lot on the Namco Classic Collection on DS when I was a kid. Years later when we finally got Internet at the house I looked up gameplay of 1 and was pretty surprised at how different the two were. That being said, I'm more fond of 2 than I am of 1.
I never knew Dig Dug was this deep and rich in lore! For a game that originally was about digging underground and inflating monsters to make them explode this video shows that it's more than that! It's an epic and long story with plot! I'll never look at Dig Dug the same again! lol

Its weird how dig dugs tale mirrors the arcade industry. Coin eater, constant innovator to classics and museums whores, to the wild surreal dating game of 2020. Can i get off now, the world has gotten too crazy
Being corrupted by the modern internet really makes you see the original Dig Dug in a different light.
Maybe I'm the crazy one, but I love Dig Dug 2. OG Dig Dug is cool too, don't get me wrong, but there's nothing more satisfying than luring all the monsters into one area and making that one single cut that plunges them all into the water.
Wherever I expected this video to go it certainly wasn't that.
You do know that the dig dug lore is part of the ace combat timeline right?
Of course - it's all connected.
12:15 The Shmup mini game is a refernce to Xevious, so they are propably trying to merge as many possible early namco's.
Dig Doug from Sonic for Hire is the best version
Ok I'm sorry but how did you not know about Dig Dug II, I used to play that all the time as a kid. It wasn't even exclusive to the NES it was literally an arcade game, though tbf I think the arcade version only got released in Japan.
I'm more shocked that Chubby Checker, the singer who sang "Let's Twist Again", remade his song just for Dig Dug commercial campaign 2 decades later. I just CAN'T BELIEVE HE DID THIS! I love "Let's Twist Again" but...wow..just wow! :O Really nice video!
Dig Dug has always been my favorite arcade game but I never would've thought it would not only have lore but lore this insane as well
"... that released 40 years ago, this year..."
Umm...
Ok yeah. I haven't even CHECKED what your other videos are, but this earned my sub. This was amazing. Can't wait to see what your other videos cover!
As a 80s kid I can tell you digdug 2 was every where , every body owned a copy but most were "my grand ma bought it for me"
I played a Dig Dug 2 emulation all the time when I was 8. I was so confused the first time I saw DD1 footage. Though probably not as hard as when I found out that inflating enemies was in the sequel the whole time.
Honestly dig dug is very good videogame, I can believe the first time I heard of it was wen I played it in the pac man party arcade machine.
I KNEW THE COMMUNITY POST HAD DIG DUG
Getting killed by Dig dug is the worst way to go out
I just so happened to stay somewhere recently where a couple of kids were playing Dig Doug 2--they, and i, had no idea of the island sinking mechanic
I had so much fun with the namco arrangement games as a kid. Galaga and dig dug are a lot of fun.
Actually, I've thoroughly enjoyed both Dig Dug - Dig Dug II - as well as Digging Strike.
2 is more fun than 1
Yo man, thankyou for this video. It's so well done, and it's such an obscure topic. I really appreciate the absurdity of the whole story, and hearing it makes the world seem a bit more silly and fun. Really it's amazing.
You left out Dig Dug's role in the Mappy web cartoon. Last I knew people had uploaded it all to RUclips and its fantastic.
if you ever make a sequel to this you should mention that totally off the rails official digdug(+other namco characters) flash animated series
The "fucking of course there is" joke made me join membership.
Dig Dug? Didn’t expect to see a video on this franchise
I would love to see more namco franchises covers here
What I recall where I first hear that Taizo and Toby are divorcing, it happened in the Dig Dug Digging Strike game.
19:43 great intro animation with Forgotten Worlds! and other forgotten capcom titles
5:55 I'm going to be honest, and I saw the Croc video as well, but I don't really understand the reference here. Maybe I'm just dumb.
Ah, good, yes, the post-Croc era of TGB videos, slapping me _right_ in the face, reminding me of that cheeky pain I forgot I _craved._
Thank you for doing a video on Dig Dug lore, his name is Taizo hori and that's more than we know about Pacman. Do a lore video on him, that would be interesting!
I never knew dig dug had more then one game.
Dig Dug II came and went... but I was one of those kids in 1989 that got it for my NES for Christmas. Honestly, I still like it a lot more than the first one.
I had no idea that Mr. Driller was Dig Dug's dad! You blew my mind today.
What's your thoughts on Mappy? Mappy is also in Namco Museum DS.
@@retrofan4963 It was, and I enjoyed playing that one a lot as well.
@@jesushuerta4379 Same here :) Mappy is my favorite game of all time.
I never knew Dig Dug was this deep and rich in lore! For a game that originally was about digging underground and inflating monsters to make them explode this video shows that it's more than that! It's an epic and long story with plot! I'll never look at Dig Dug the same again! lol
