As a painting major in college and art teacher, I find these reactions so human -- they realize all that they have been missing all their lives but suddenly they can see everything as everyone else sees. This takes time to adjust to seeing the world in a new way. I don't blame them one bit for getting emotional. The one family got their young man a book of colors meant for children, but that was a really thoughtful gift so he can page through and get an idea of what the variations in a color are -- there are many different shades of each color. I was waiting for the man in Lowe's to be taken to the paint department. He would have totally freaked out at all the color samples! I can't imagine not being able to mix colors of paint to get the color I want....or to study the color wheel and learn where the colors go on it, but never being able to fully understand why they are placed where the are, nor how to mix red and blue to get purple, yellow and red to make orange, and so on. These videos remind me of those where the person or baby hears for the first time. The resulting emotions are the same -- delight, awe, and emotions running over. God bless everyone with such sensory deprivation. I hope more and more people get these glasses and that those with hearing problems can also receive the tools they need to hear.

Where I live, in Southern Arizona, we are known for our spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and I love to watch these gifts of mother nature. Tonight, when I watch the sunset, I will do so with an even greater appreciation, with humble gratitude, and a prayer that this vision-aid tech becomes available to all who need it!

I held it together, until the very end. I have tried to imagine my world without color, never seeing a sunset or sunrise as the beautiful wondrous thing that it is. Never seeing the color of my children's eyes. The simple breathtaking beauty of a rainbow. I cannot imagine it because I, like pretty much everyone else, take these things for granted. It's the things in this life that we consider pretty basic or automatic, that astound us the most when we see people who do without them. It reminds us to be grateful for what we have.

There is so much beauty in this world that goes unseen & undervalued because we experience it non-stop.
Take a moment to realize just what color really is & how fantastic it is to experience it. Then take one more step to realize that we are all colorblind in the infrared & ultraviolet spectra of light. We are all missing so much of the “real” world without knowing it.
That which we call life is but a slice of the pie & an infinitesimal one at that.
