Only 1/4 jewish but I just cant listen to papirosen in public, without crying buckets, That hungry little boy selling cigarettpaper in the rain, will be a part of my life now when I am 66, and I have no idea if he will recite the Shema or a Catholic act of faith the day he dies.

Smutek słów, piękno muzyki. Piosenka najprawdopodobniej z rodowodem raczej z polskich miejskich ubogich dzielnic z przewagą ludności żydowskiej (może Łódź, choć i w Warszawie jej powstanie nie byłoby niemożliwe). I pozwalam sobie tak czytać słowa po polsku:

Listening to these songs brings back memories of my parents who I miss so dearly especially my mother who passed away too young and suddenly ....sad to think we're the last generation to enjoy or undestand these Yiddish songs.
My parents spoke yiddish all the time...my generation speaks English, Israelis speak Hebrew....I guess if you speak German and are Jewish you might appreciate Yiddish songs and maybe the Russian Jews children....so what do you think?

@@Ursugarspice I'm Scottish and not Jewish, but with enough knowledge of Germanic languages to appreciate Yiddish (with a little help) - which I do, hugely!
These songs seem to touch my very soul - I know these people, their hopes and fears, their loves, their sorrows, exactly as if they were here with me now, my own kith and kin. I don't know why that should be, exactly, but it is probably because of a shared experience of poverty and the struggles - and the joys - of my early life I find reflected in the words of so many Yiddish songs.
My strong feeling is that we owe a duty to these people to keep the memory of their rich language and culture alive, which the Nazis tried to wipe from the face of the Earth. Not only for that reason but also because it enriches our culture too.

I love her voice, and her Yiddish is exquisite. Given the text, I find the rather jaunty manner a little odd. I suspect, though, that it is historically accurate, and that the contrast between the lyrics and manner of singing is meant to be mordant, ironic, the way German Expressionism typically was (the work of Kurt Weill, for example). In any case, this is a wonderful performance!

Early twenties of the 20th century. In these years there were terrible pogroms done mainly by Ukrainians, Russians, and Poles, murdering an estimated number of 250,000 Jews, thus leaving tens of thousands orphans. This song is about one of them, a young boy staying barefoot in the rain, soaked wet, who is trying to make a meagre living by selling cigarettes (papirosen) to passers by.

Did he look for leftovers of cigarettes to make his own, handmade, (but?) ‘second hand’ cigarettes?
I live in The Netherlands and I have seen people collecting cigarette ‘leftovers’ from the (dirty) streets so they can continue smoking without paying, at least partly, avoiding the rising prices for it (and taxes as well). Even during the corona pandemic... .

@Simon McCreath Yiddish is based on German. But as the Jews were resettling to Poland before the war, they gradually added Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian words to create their own.
Here I notice 3 words of Polish origin i this song.

@Simon McCreath Your conclusions are interesting. If you want to know, the Polish word for cigarette- papieros also comes from Paper-Papier As you see in polish also paper is papier . Just tobacco wrapped in paper. There is no rose. os is element here, just such an ending was created

For me, in general, Yiddish is so I don't know what to call it in English. It is like a simplified pronunciation of German words, made their own way by the Jews. .
But you know the genesis of the lyrics for this song? It was written by a man who watched little Jewish boys selling cigarettes in the streets of Polish cities, he had also been such a boy before.
