Sure Ramsay can be mean and call peple names, but at the same time, all his shows are about getting the best out of people, help them become better chefs and give them a chance to break out in the industry. Heck, in Hell's Kitchen, the final prize is the spot of head chef at one of his restaurant with a salary of $250,000. He can't just chose anybody.
But he is brutal, he can be a little more easy but lecturing them won't really help
I heard that when the show is off camera, he would actually tell the eliminated contestant the positive stuff he/she has done on the show

Who says that the best way to have people perform at their highest level is to belittle their skills, totally disrespect them as a person, and embarrass them in front of other people? If that is what it takes to be a chef, then count me out; there is no job worth having to be subjected to this kind of shit, and the people who put up with it, in effect, have absolutely zero self respect and no self dignity. What happened to politely correcting someone's mistakes, and patiently showing them how they can improve? Maybe it was so long ago, no one remembers it.
Most restaurants he visits close down because noone wants to eat there after he ruins their reputation.
Simon Cowell really isn't that bad... He just is very critical about his feedback because that's how he got so famous and good at his job. Gordon Ramsay is one of the best chefs out there, but he isn't the best at showing kindness and showing critical feedback without making the people who look up to him feel like crap. But, what do I know... I only know how to make KD!

As a matter of fact, I have to agree that Joe Bastianich (who I'd also often referred to as "Bastardbitch" or even just Baldy when I couldn't remember his last name) is much worse than Gordon Ramsay. Gordon isn't exactly mean as he is just brutally honest and won't take crap from chefs who clearly aren't giving their all, but he's willing to acknowledge when somebody has done a great job and give them genuine praise, too. The TV shows, particularly the American ones, tend to play up his anger through editing. Joe, however, often seems like he simply criticizes just to hurt and demean others--the few times I've seen him compliment anything, it looked like it was almost painful for him to do so. He's apparently just as much of a prick in real life since he and Mario Batali stole so much in tips for themselves. I actually eventually stopped watching MasterChef because I couldn't stand watching Bastardbitch anymore, but now I might watch again now that he's gone.
By the way, constantly destroying property such as breaking plates all the time like he does is a red flag of abusive tendencies. So that's a likely reason he just tends to give me a sick feeling in my stomach.

I find it a guilty pleasure to enjoy Simon and Gordon being mean. Sometimes, it is just us not wanting to hurt other people's feelings but admit it, it's fun to see someone being brutally honest to them. Well, maybe not so "honest" but at least, it helps me get rid of everyday's stress because of social standards on behaviors towards others

My head chef at the technical school I went to was on Hell's Kitchen. Apparently, producers made the conditions hell, turning the heat up high and AC on high at various intervals of sleep to keep the chefs on edge, turning off various stoves so the food would be undercooked, putting hairs on dishes, etc. Gordon rarely ever talked to anyone aside from when the cameras were rolling and would leave as soon as they turned off. Many chefs wanted to leave prematurely and had fake reasons for elimination made up on the show, and everyone was required to have a psych evaluation after they left... That's how *real* _"reality"_ shows are.

Ramsay is actually a down-to-earth guy. It's incompetence that pisses him off. In Kitchen Nightmares, he's trying to save a failing business (similar to John Taffer's Bar Rescue) and he is really blunt with incompetent owners, chefs, managers, etc. In Hell's Kitchen, the season prize is for a position as a head chef at a very prestigious restaurant, often one of his own, and the salary is $250,000 a year. He will yell at chefs because he wants to bring the best out of them.

Simon is not mean. He just says it like it is and he is not trying to sugar coat anything. What I like about him is he is super charming, a gentleman, sweet, with an amazing sense of humor. He is sexy, smart, down to earth and when he says something good he praises it. I just love him.
