I've been considering a Riese and Müller. This video is the icing on the cake. As often as possible I buy from countries where workers have safe environments, are well-paid, have holidays, sick pay and other benefits. It costs more for the consumer but less for the employee.
I've been commuting daily with a Riese & Müller Charger for the last 2 years and couldn't be happier. They might be pricier than other alternatives, but in the long run, I feel every penny is justified. They are just beautifully crafted bikes.
The frames are manufactured in a variety of places. They have had frames built in China in the past although most of them are built in Taiwan and they are moving much of their production to Portugal these days. The frame in the video was made in Portugal for example.
Great video. I am the proud owner of a R&M Super Charger, and it is a wonderful piece of engineering. The workers in the factory look very relaxed. Good quality materials, good working conditions, German design equal a great biking experience. I don't think R&M can lower prices. The margins must be thin. Dealers need 45% to survive, you have tariffs, transport cost, highly paid labor in Germany, expensive parts, etc. It is actually a miracle that they can produce these bikes at the current price point. Nevertheless, they are expensive and that seems to be true for all good things in life.
I just visited the Propel Bike shop in Brooklyn NY. I was able to test ride two bikes. I was mesmerized by the video. Once the winter passes in NYC I’m going to return to Propel and get myself the Tinker Vario.
This production facility looks like a place Riese and Müller can be proud of. I have yet to purchase an electric-assist bicycle (sold my last bike due to chronic knee pain and am wary of involvement again), but I can appreciate an operation like this, as opposed to an anonymous facility somewhere in China, slapping bikes together at maybe 5x the speed, to be sold by multiple brands.
That’s a very nice factory. Who would have thought that so much technology goes into building a bike, especially an e bike! Those Reise and Muller bikes are really cool. If I could only afford one...
Thanks Harvey! They make awesome bikes for sure and the production facility is one of the best I’ve seen. The bikes are pricey, but I will note they are well worth the money from my perspective.
Thanks for the great video! As a happy owner in the UK of a Rohloff Supercharger, your videos were a big part of why I went for an R&M bike in the first place. Sorry you don't have a store over here!
You got it! I hope it was detailed enough. We had a lot more footage, but I figure this is a good glimpse. It sure is awesome what they’re doing though!
Great video , and its very much appreciated that the factory in Germany has an excellent disability friendly approach with recruitment for its work force, a question for you Chris, given you have to import from the EU, are the import tariffs high ? and whats your thoughts on the new 25% hit on EU goods , with the further threat of more to come ?
Thanks! I’m glad you like it! They do have a very great corporate responsibility, it’s quite inspiring and I’ve learned many things by the way they operate. For years there has been no import duties on ebikes as a way to encourage their use. So far it’s been only China has been hit by the tariffs, I hope it doesn’t happen to products from the EU as most of our bikes come from there at the moment. I don’t think it will though, but I’ll never say never.
The frames are made in a variety of places, but largely Portugal, Taiwan and some in China. There are few large scale frame manufacturers throughout the world and R&M work with several of them depending on the bikes unique features. The motors are made in Hungary and most of the rims are made Taiwan as they primarily work with Alex.
I bought the Multicharger passenger as a car replacement in July 2019. Since 1500km driven. No problems, only driving pleasure. The bike is so stable, load hardly noticeable. The white sparkles in the sun. Nyon with its own gears is perfect. The countless beautiful moments and experiences of cycling with my daughter on board make me happy. Thank you Mr. Riese & Müller with team for the product!
Propel Electric Bikes -Yes, I have an Electra Townie Go 8i. I so love it as it allows me to ride longer and faster than I otherwise could. I got an e-bike after watching you with Court many times. There is space in my garage for the Nevo though! It is a beauty and so well made.
Thanks Lin! It’s great to hear that your ebike is helping you get out more! Court is awesome and I’m grateful to work with him. Let us know if we can ever help get that Nevo in your garage or better yet out on the road on even longer rides ;)
Great video Chris. Just subscribed to your channel. Like many here RM bikes are what I hope to own one day. My wife and I tested this very model in Austin, TX last year and we were blown away. Sure there are some VW of ebikes, but it depends on what you want. An ebike definitely offers more utility in a city than a car or a motorcycle from my perspective. I’m glad that you’re riding though. Whatever gets you out there is great from my point of view.
I agree. Dunno if Reise and Muller even do non-electric bikes but in the case of Gazelle, their electric bike that costs £2100 is just £700 in non-electric form and the plain old 3 speeder is just £500 which is all a bit mad really!

Yes, we know someone would comment on this. She is a brand new rider and that’s how she wanted to start out. She is well aware of the appropriate saddle height but she will work up to that point. We should all try to be more tolerant of new riders, we were all that person one day.
I hope that makes sense. This scenario happens a lot in the shop. I’d rather someone start where they are comfortable than to have the perfectly adjusted saddle. We have even installed dropper seat posts on urban bikes sometimes to give people an easier time to stabilize the bike when they’re stopped.
@@Propelbikes Thanks! This is understandable. To be honest, I also was considering a dropper seat posts for my Homage GX 2019 as it is almost impossible to get a save stand when stopping suddenly at a traffic light, especially on uneven ground. Permanent lowering of the saddle, however, is no option when driving longer distances.
No worries. We’ll probably make a video about this topic as it is an important one for sure. I would highly recommend a dropper post, they are really great to have. I have one on the Load I ride often and it’s really helps me handle the bike more easily, especially when it’s near it’s capacity and I stop. I don’t have to get off the saddle.
@@Propelbikes great video, thank you! Would really appreciate seeing a video on this topic too. Looks like a great bike, but would just get stolen in the UK the first time it was left anywhere. If a bike's worth more than £50 you can't use it for anything other than pleasure cycle rides where it's always in view.
People have a similar feeling in NYC but with appropriate locks a good strategy and insurance you can actually use a nice bike to get around. I do it all the time and we have countless customers that do the same.
You can buy hidden trackers for the Bosch motor on the Nevo. This will alert you if your bike is moved and you will know exactly where it is (down to the exact house) if stolen. If you are paying this much for a bike, it's a no brainer!
What a contrast with the Chinese built bikes where a bunch of peasants are throwing together bikes as fast as they can while an overseer scowls at the slightest slow down. We recently received our Chinese made ebikes. Parts were missing, threads stripped out, extra hardware was lying in the shipping box that didn’t belong, loose parts. Total slap together delivery. This brand did have premium advertising.
Yes, this came up, but the challenge as with many here in the US, she wasn’t experienced riding and felt more comfortable riding with the saddle lower. Won’t live that one down though lol
At the end,wen the lady leaves de bikeshop, there is no fit! So you can see the result; the sadlle is to low.! The ankle of her knee is too big en she sits uncomfortable.
This was mentioned previously and we are well aware of this. She was a very inexperienced cyclist and she was made aware of the incorrect fitment but she wanted to start with a lower saddle so she could touch the ground easier when she stopped. Maybe we should have picked someone else for the video, but this is a reality of things sometimes.
I love my Riese& Müller bike, have done more than 5,000 km in the first year. The video clip is good, but it hurts me to watch the girl at the end, because of her very unhealthy seat position.
Great to hear you are getting a good amount of saddle time. I know and she knows she is in the incorrect saddle position. Unfortunately we have many cyclists that are very new it’s safer for them to start a bit lower. I’m happy to report that a week later she is now at an appropriate height, but I will never force someone to raise their saddle just because that’s what is deemed as correct. Safety and comfort come first. I guess I’m some ways this is a sign of the state of cycling in the US. We have a long way to go since many kids don’t ride bikes these days.
Yes, we know this. She is very inexperienced and was more comfortable starting there. This happens sometimes. We educate them on the appropriate saddle height and they usually get their saddle to the proper height within a week or so if riding. I think it’s totally fine if people start there if it means they will feel more confident at first.
We all know the seat height is a little low. She doesn’t have much experience riding but she is aware of the appropriate height and will work up to it. We do this often for new riders and I think it works as long as they feel safe.
Maybe you’re right, sometimes it’s just a time and resource thing. We could have had another person ride the bike, but we work with what we have sometimes.
