  • In a very special format this week, we have in the Friday Feature Artist studio painter and sculptor Clare James.
With a pre-filmed interview, Clare invites you into her studio and garden as we discuss the inspiration she gets from tending to the soil and animals. Clare explains, ‘I am drawn towards the untamed, unusual and old-fashioned plants that we have growing.’
Clare who has been described as a passionate plant woman with a sharp eye for beauty, and a desire to live honestly, takes us on a tour of her garden and her unique studio made out of salvaged materials, whilst explaining how her art highlights issues about habitat loss, climate change and extinction, often by trying to capture a sense of wonder and intrigue.
We would like to thank Clare James for sharing their time, artwork and knowledge with us.

Thank you FAT2 and Clare - I feel so refreshed and inspired to see Clare's beautiful work and especially to hear her talk so openly and thoughtfully about making art, caring for the natural world and living well - what a lovely person! As a maker myself it helps to hear her talk about working in lots of different ways, and how her multiple projects all seem to work out really well because she works from her heart. Often I have felt I really should focus on one thing, that it should meet "art" standards - but if it is to connect with people it must come from the heart.

I felt like Clare could be a kindred Spirit - she is so real and earthy and I love her eclectic and heartfelt approach to her art - her connection to nature and animals resonates deeply with me. I feel inspired to turn my chaotic artistic mind into something creative. Thank you.

What an absolute privilege to listen and see into Clare’s world. Thank you both for such a wonderful and inspiring conversation. I don’t know why our society and we humans give labels like “poor mental health” to others when in fact someone like Clare is so kind, so aware of the beauty of life around her and she is deeply connected to the absolute reality of what life is.. what a beautiful soul who creates from such careful and respectful observation. Having watched this early this morning my day is starting and will continue with a warm glow in my heart and such deep gratitude in knowing that Clare is offering so much to the web in our world by who she is and what she does. Thank you. 💖💖💖

Claire, you're an amazing Soul and it shows in your beautiful artworks!
I believe that if you were to approach art galleries, they would jump at the chance to display that artwork with the video, showing next to it. Perhaps you could add an intro, on the video, telling people about the concept behind it.
It's definitely Art Gallery worthy! 👏😍🤩🐛

Thank you for sharing this amazing artist with us. Claire is a breath of fresh air, which the art world really needs. I am currently doing a Diploma of Visual Arts through the Lismore NSW TAFE. Our head teacher is always telling us that to have a sustainable art career we need to be multidisciplinary artists. I too want to do all the things, even at 50.

What type of fabric is used that your work is printed on? I have photos printed on fabric that Epson makes but it is hard to sew with.
