I like the design, wanted it when it was first announced, but the price point should be more in the 30-50 dollar range there is just too much competition that can do this for less, specially if your like me and don't care about those 3 or 4 good games for n64 (powkiddy v90 comes to mind).
It is, thankfully, possible to remap the controls so you don’t have to stop to adjust the camera. It’s just in a configuration file, so it’s not obvious.
Well, for starters, something I noticed was that the texture filtering is disabled. That means this version of the game is more optimized than the original, and they must be doing more to optimize the game.
2:42 No. The door to upstairs requires a key to access the loading zone, so even if you could BLJ up those stairs (which you can’t), you would just clip behind the door and be stuck in the façade.
Actually, you can clip back into the lobby using a BLJ against the invisible barrier, then holding the control stick in the opposite direction where Mario's facing to shoot back in. I discovered that while fiddling around on the 3ds Port of the game.
As a child of the 80s/90s I can confirm this world have blown our minds. Gameboy was incredible, GameGear and Atrari Lynx were technically very impressive but ruined by battery life.
If I could time travel without my actions having consequences, I would go back in time when this game gets released and walk around the streets playing the 3d allstars version on the switch to see how they would react
Yes, the "foldable" qualifier is necessary, because I used to have a Pocketsprite, which was even smaller than that. Ultimately gave it away as a gift because the controls were too tiny for action games and the screen was too tiny for RPGs. This one seems a lot easier to play on.
If you wanted to figure out which version of Mario 64, you can easily check by jumping a couple of times. In the newer, Shindou version, some of Mario's voicelines were pitched up to make it better (it just made it worse and is the hearing equivalent of an eyesore once you realize that this change exists). So by jumping a couple of times, you should be able to tell pretty easily. Also, you can't blj the main room staircase (at least not very well). That staircase is actually a slope compared to some of the other staircases in the game. And even if you did manage to get enough speed, the top middle doors lead to a warpzone that can only be activated by entering the doors normally (this means you can't skip to the end THAT easily). Aight that's it.
Actually you can figure out whether you play on Shindou Mario 64 way earlier. It`s when you boot up the game. The moment that Mario says ''It`s-a-me Mario!'' along with the logo of the game popping up, you see the year and trademark. If it shows 1996, that means you're either playing the NTSC-J (1996) or NTSC-U versions (the difference is mainly voice acting). If Mario doesn`t say hello after, you're playing the original Japanese 1996 version. If he does say hello, you play the US version. However if it shows 1996-1997, then you're playing on Shindou. :)
Fun fact : Even if you manage to BLJ to the door that allows you to go to the top-part of the castle, there is nothing behind this door, this is another level so, when mario enters for real in this door, a teleportation is triggered.
Very cool and unique video. Who would have ever thought that this would even be possible to play this game on a key chain back when the game was released? Radical.
I wouldn't be surprised if there was an additional or more severe issue with input delay between the OS, hardware and 8-way -> 3D input simulation for the game. That's my theory anyway, since I'm noticing how long it takes for Mario to move after you push the button. Honestly, it could also explain why your control feels so "inaccurate" - I think a lot of it has to do with your timing being off from the delay.

Is 65$ the price is okay... Most people just think is not worth, because of how awful it is to play on it. Is not that useful, good experience. You will play couple games and most likely use it as a keychain and flex to your friends how small your handheld is.
You can't BLJ trough the upstairs locked door, since that ain't just a door, it need to trigger the event of mario opening it to load a different map (the upstairs section). The doors you can BLJ trough are the doors that have the rest of the map already loaded on the other side

Pocketsprite is like a Sansa Clip Zip that doesn't play music or video really, so in the hindsight not really all that worth buying. Especially that it costs the same as a Sansa Clip Zip.

5:00 the reaction from that piranha plant seeing this guy fail over and over again with that skip cheat is hilarious XD It got so bored watching him fail that it straight up FELL ASLEEP! LMAO XD
When you mentioned the D-pad being smaller than a penny, I paused and brought one to drop onto my screen to see if it was the same for mine (I watch on Vita 'cuz no mid-roll ads. Also don't have a smartphone ATM). And lo and behold, it was! Knowing this, I'm pretty sure the size at which the device was seen at on my screen is almost 1:1 to its real size! Also when dropping the penny onto the screen I learned that it can touch the screen in the same way as my finger can. So anyways, thanks for the fun video, Nintendrew! Now I've found another fun little thing to put on the lanyard that came with my Vita's case.
When I was little my controller didn’t have working c buttons so this was kind of my experience with super Mario 64. I never was able to get the wing cap and was just so confused where the red switch was.
You can't blj on the 1st floor "stairs" as it's actually just a slope Even if you could, there's nothing back there. Unlike sm64ds you have to open the door. An easy way to tell (other than the fact you cant blj) is that the stairs leading to Bob when you walk on them the camera shifts slightly and mario looks straight, but walking up the main stairs mario looks up/down and the camera doesn't vibrate, it's fluid
That might not be physically possible. The smallest features on modern chips are down to just a few dozen atoms in size. There isn't much room left to improve without a major technological breakthough. Moore's Law has been slowly dying in recent years, and will cease to exist by 2030. The chip on the Funkey S is already very tiny and equivalent to a 20 year-old desktop PC. A 2010 Gaming PC might be eventually doable in this size, and that'll be the end. Of course, larger handhelds have a lot more leeway, and most likely will have PS5-level hardware at some point. The good news is that many scientists are working furiously to find a fundamentally better way to manufacture computers. Big Tech isn't going to let a simple thing like physics get in the way when there are trillions of dollars at stake.
You got way more patience and determination than I do. With my sight, I’d need my glasses and a magnifier to even see that tiny screen. And those tiny controls, nope I couldn’t do it. I’d just say screw it then put it down next to my budgies and start taking pics of them playing with it XD.
2:30 It's impossible to BLJ there because: 1. Those are not stairs. It's just a slope that looks like stairs. 2. Even if it was possible, if you got behind that door you would be stuck in a box, and softlocked, because that part of the castle loads only if you use the door.
A Super Mario 64 port for a system with D-pad only must be almost unplayable, imagine if Nintendo released the game for the DS, that would be a terrible idea! Good thing they would never do that... XD
I'm surprised it's even possible to beat that final Bowser fight on a keychain. I played Super Mario 64 for the first time over December 2020-February 2021, and that last Bowser battle is so hard. It took me three days to beat it - and that was on the Switch. It would probably take me six days on one of those keychains!
this has been posted probably by now but you cant BLJ on the long staircase in the lobby since its actually not a stair but a slope with the texture of a stair. with another trick, the LBLJ, you could technically bypass the first key door, but it doesnt take you through the loading zone, because you have to interact with the door in order to get to another loading zone. you are just stuck there and cant go any further to the "upstairs" area
Getting to the floating island in bomb battlefield is super easy does a cannon that's pretty much right underneath it and if you aim the Cannon as far up as it'll let you you'll always land on the island. The second Bowser fight is super hard because the camera keeps getting stuck when you have to go up to the second "floor" at least on the switch version.
The stairs to the top of the upstairs loading zone is a ramp so you can't blj on it without enough backwards speed. This was likely done because it was added late game and they had 2 steps that would let you jump up there
It took me FOREVER to realize that the Function button was used to control the camera. Never liked that setup, but it’s thankfully possible to remap the buttons. After running the game once, a file called sm64config.txt appears on your FunKey S. This can be opened with a regular text editor on your computer to remap the buttons. The following is the contents of my preferred config file, which sets C-left and right to X and Y, and C-up to Fn. This lets you adjust the camera on the fly, fullscreen true draw_sky true texture_filtering false enable_fog false enable_sound true screen_width 320 screen_height 240 frameskip 2 key_a 30 key_b 48 key_start 31 key_r 49 key_z 50 key_cup 37 key_cdown 24 key_cleft 21 key_cright 45 key_stickup 22 key_stickdown 32 key_stickleft 38 key_stickright 19
I always found the camera buttons on the N64 so awful to use that I never ended up using them. Hence my experience for Mario 64 on original hardware is pretty much the same that you described here... Even back on the day when that game was all the craze I couldn't figure out the correct depth and hated that controller! Mario 64 and the N64 controller are the entire reason why I switched from Super Nintendo directly to Playstation back then. To this day I struggle to play N64 games, even on other hardware... It just never worked for me.
I hope they make a FunKey that can be hook on any type of tv set. That'll be great to carry on a long hotel stay or somewhere you could get a tv but your reception is lousy enough that you can't use it to watch terrestrial broadcast!
BLJ from the lobby to the stairs is impossible because it's 2 separate loading zones. You can't activate the loading zone unless you're going through the door, and you can't go through the door without a key.
I know this video is a year old, but could you play *Metroid Fusion* on the FunKey? Metroid uses the shoulder buttons for aiming Samus’ arm cannon, but the shoulder buttons so stiff, it’s hard to aim with the L while simultaneously holding the D-pad and the B button to shoot. I’d love to see someone play it.
you cannot blj through the upstairs door, as theres no loading zone behind it. you ust open the door to trigger the load into the next area. clipping behind the door, however, is still sorta neat.
The whole team is mindblown over here!
Making the FunKey S a reality was worth it for the sake of this video alone! Well done!!!

Nintendo: Do not mod or pirate our games or hack our consoles
Nintendrew: *makes Mario 64 on a keychain*
Nintendo: I don’t see anything
I can't believe how small that little handheld device is but it is pretty cool
You are nuts, man. This is crazy
Holy crap I remember a few years back when you had like 20k subs, I didn't realize you were so big now.
10:37 I like the Coldplay reference
Actually using a D pad for Mario 64 isin't that bad, If you played the DS Port, its the same effect
Lmao yes
bro your collection/game room is so cool you made me subscribe just so I can see it more often
I may have to look in to one those lil things if they come in blue and come for sale in the US.
A challenger approaches!
A very small Challenger
Bro I Was Waiting Thankyou Bro
I hope they make a FunKey that can be hook on any type of tv set. That'll be great to carry on a long hotel stay or somewhere you could get a tv but your reception is lousy enough that you can't use it to watch terrestrial broadcast!
Pretty sure you can lol
Love your content
Next , "Can you beat SM64 if the screne is only 1 pixel?
bruh this guy has a whole COLLECTION OF NINTENEDO STUFF
I need this. Really. I love small consoles.
@@NSegaXP How to get it?
BLJ from the lobby to the stairs is impossible because it's 2 separate loading zones. You can't activate the loading zone unless you're going through the door, and you can't go through the door without a key.
"... and even PlayStation"
You're telling me I could play Breath of Fire III on this thing?! 👀
Also, I gotta say man.
This was pretty impressive xD
I'd try to play Megaman Legends 2 hvshshsh
@@Is-wunny I would be tempted, but trying to play it D-Pad only is... hoo boy, that is an adventure
Your my favorite RUclipsr
I wouldn't mind having one of those, that is as long as there is only a library of games that go with the controls better.
I see the textures now have SM64DS syndrome.
“New FunKey Mode!”
It reminds me of those tiny arcades.
I bet some people are going to be able to run Doom on this
every copy of sm64 is personalized
drews copy:
I wonder if I can play the Crash PS1 Trilogy on the FunKey... 🤔
They really should have made this thing a bit bigger, its still cool, but it could have had soo much potential
you cannot blj through the upstairs door, as theres no loading zone behind it. you ust open the door to trigger the load into the next area. clipping behind the door, however, is still sorta neat.
'Small precise movements would be impossible.'
The irony.
