Couple of thoughts: I know absolutely nothing about welding and I sorta refuse to educate myself about the fundamentals because I enjoy the mystery of why welders don’t electrocute themselves when they weld. I find the process amazing. Secondly, I do not take the food on my table for granted and I am thankful for you, Warren, and the millions of other craftspeople who make that possible for myself and family. The basics of life do matter. The hoards of individuals that dedicate their lives and talents matter too. My parents always, always had us say a blessing before every meal. It was meant for you and others that provide for us.

Thanks for the repair tour Warren, Duke and Josie.
In Florida when I was horse farming, we just baled grass fields for bedding in the stalls, sometimes we would get straw after folks combined their rye or oats. Humidity made it tough for bailing horse quality hay without it moulding inside the bales. It would look pretty, but two weeks later the bales would start carrying heat and get blue/green molds growing, bad for horses, okay for cows and other ruminants.
Baled timothy/orchard grass and alfalfa blended fields for horse and cow hay in Western, NY just East of Rochester on a 70 acre farm back in the 1994 - 96 when I went back to school wanting to become a Vet, you know the dream...my brain could not handle university level calculus and the engineering Physics professor had a heart to heart with me and said I should think of a different career path... got that Biotech degree. Ended finally doing industrial maintenance work for twenty years and another Industrial degree while working full time.
So folks I think should try out different things to make a living from and what clicks for them and not be stigmatized by getting dirty, greasy and sweating for a career.
I remember that was where the guidance counselors would send the kids to tech classes because they did not fit in the high schools Ëducation"systems and everyone was told to go to college to be something important career-wise some day. I ran away from them and just sweated my way in the horse farming industry in Florida, until the more educated folks told me to go to school and open up my brains for more things and not waste them on the farm.
I reflect on those choices today... getting older and grey...

Unfortunately Algebra nips a lot of kids in the bud coming out the gate from anything they'd be otherwise good at, and Calculus deals the final blow to others who might have made it. Some people who are otherwise good at what they are pursuing do not have the kind of thinking it requires to do these calculations of a certain design and it shouldn't be required.

I am about as far south of the fire as you are north of it. I have friends who are going to be really hit hard by this, but they are alive. Seems like that north end of the valley and the mountains has just been hammered the past few years. Our number is gonna come up here, we have dodged a lot of bullets the last few years.
The for Sale sign went up on our place yesterday, we are fleeing this insane asylum.
I know a number of big companies who do the same program with their equipment. I used to help out at a friends shop on my days off and when one of their trucks would come in on the hook and the fleet gr was right there, crying alligator tears needing it yesterday ...we would find a way, but we waited for parts and that drove them nuts. More than once I recall him telling the Fleet guy "don't you remember when I worked on this thing last year, it was a "just get it running, well do it right in the off season? You wouldn't listen and let me fix the parts that I told you were going to go south next, and ya never brought it back, and now it is broke way worse, and gonna cost a ton more". Just like I told you.
They never learned. Thanks Warren, you bring a little bit of sanity into a world in dire need of it.

The Fire at weed was a bad one!. In a former life i was a chief engineer at a saw mill,in charge of the maintenance and construction of everything mechanical in the plant. Fire was a ever present problem although the mill was actually blown down every night to clear up saw dust that escaped from the extraction devices around the saws etc. I notice a comment that the Weed Mill was nearly defunct and that often means that people who have no place being in such places create mischief.
I see in the pics posted on line that a few classic cars including a Plymouth road runner (?) which looked to have gotten so hot it's alloy wheels are now shiny pools of metal on the road.
We know all too well down here in Australia how devastating fires are,so thoughts and prayer to those who will now have to rebuild their lives .

Oh yes Warren, they use it and use it, till it's fucked, and then they are looking at you like it's your fault.
I just say, add up all the time you should of spent maintaining it, and that's about how long it's going to take me to put it right.
